LOG-JACK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented oce. a, rear.
Application filed June 17, 1919. Serial No. 304.770.-
T 0 all whom it may] concern:
Be it known that I, PERCY E. BATTELLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Louisa, in the county of Louisa, State of Virginia, 11 ve invented a new and useful Log-Jack; and I do hereby declare the'following to be a full, clear, and exact descrip tion of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to log jacks and has for its object to provide a jack of this character which may be easily transported and used by wood choppers or sawyers in the woods.
A further object of the invention is to provide a jack which may be easily and quickly placed under a log, adjacent the point where it is desired to saw the same, by so placing the jack and raising the log the binding action on the saw and its teeth may be obviate-d. Also to provide means whereby the log may be maintained in raised position if so desired.
lVith the above and other objects in view the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter set forth shown in the drawings, described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of the ack.
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view through the jack showing a log thereon in dotted lines.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the jack standard, which is formed from vertically disposed bars 2 in parallel relation to each other, the upper ends of said bars 2 having disposed therebetween a spacing block 3, which spacing block and ends are secured together by means of screws or rivets 4. A spacing block 5 is disposed between the lower ends of the members 2 and passing through said spacing block 5 and the lower ends of said bars 2 are rivets or screws 6. The spacing block 5 extends rearwardly so as to form a base or foot engaging portion 7, on which the foot may rest during a log raising operation.
Members 2 are provided with a series of vertically disposed apertures 8, said apertures 8 in each member 2 are in alinernent *ith the apertures of the other bar 2. The rear edges 9 of the members 2 are provided with a series of inclined slots 10. Pivotally mounted between the members 2 on a pin 11 which passes through apertures 8 in the members 2 is alever 12, the forward end of said lever being rounded oi as at 13 thereby providing a bearing surface for the log engaging member 14, which log engaging memher is formed with a compound curve therein.
lVhen it is desired to so raise the log as to relieve the pinching action upon a saw,
the end 15 is passed under the log 16 adja cent the saw kerf and then the lever 12 is forced downwardly at its handle end 17, thereby raising the log slightly. After the log has been raised, if it is so, desired to maintain the same in raised position a pin 18 may be placed in registering slots 10, so that the lever when the handle end thereof is released will come in contact with the pin 18 and hold the lever in position.
hen it is desired to raise small logs this may be done by leaving the pin 11 in the lever 12, and placing the ends thereof in the inclined registering slots 10. By so using the jack, small logs may be more quickly raised than by the positioning of the parts as shown in Fig. 1; however, when the 'ack is used with its pivotal point in the inclined slots, a pin may be passed through any of the registering slots 8 and disposed under the lever 12, thereby providing means for maintaining the log in raised position during the sawing operation.
The invention having been set forth what is claimed new and useful is A jack of the character described compris ing a standard, said standard being formed from a pair of vertically disposed spaced bars, means for holding said bars in'spaced relation to each other, a series of vertically disposed apertures in each bar, the apertures in one of the bars being in alinement with the apertures of the other bar,,the rear edges of the bars being provided with downwardly and inwardly extending notches, the bottoms of said notches terminating at points midway between the apertures in a horizontal plane, said apertures being in alinement with their adjacent notches in a plane at substantially 45 degrees, the notches of one vertical bar being in alinement with the notches of the other vertical bar, a lever disposed between the vertical bars and pivoted on a pin extending through alined apertures of' the vertical bars and one end of the lever, a log engaging element at one end of the lever, said lever being so proportioned that when a pin is placed in the downwardly and inwardly extending notches immediately above the pivotal point of the lever, it will maintain the lever in a substantially horizontal position when its handle end is allowed to come into engagement with said pin;
In testimony whereofl have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
PERCY E. BATTELLE.
