To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES AUGUSTUS REED, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Williamsport, in the county of Lycoming and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Making Ornamental Rope, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to sewing machines generally and particularly to an attachment therefor. The purpose of such attachment when used in conjunction with a sewing machine is to provide an apparatus formaking ornamental rope embodied in my Letters Patent #1,3 l6,162, patented July 13, 1920. It is also a purpose of my invention to provide an apparatus of the above described character which simultaneously stitches and cuts the strips of paper comprised in the ornamental rope so that when the strips are subjected to a twisting operation by a device separate and independent from the present invention, the ornamental rope embodied in my co-pending application is produced.
Twill describe one form of apparatus embodying my invention, and will then point out the novel features therof in claims.

Referring specifically to the drawings and particularly to Figs. 1, 2 and 3, I have here shown a portion of a conventional form of sewing machine including a table T have ing a suitable opening through which me tends a feed bar B which is movable laterally to coact with a presser foot F for effooting the feeding of the material to'be stitched transversely oi a needle N. The
presser foot F and the needle N are secured to the lower ends of vertically disposed shafts 'S and S, respectively, which are mounted for reciprocating movement within a head H.
The attachment embodying the subject matter of my invention comprises a slide plate of a form shown in Fig. 2 which has a dove-tail connection with a suitable recess formed in the upper side of the table T at a point directly below the head H. This plate is designated at P and as shown in Fig. 4, it is provided with an opening 15 in which the feed bar B works, and a relatively large opening 16 in which works a horizontal cutting blade 0. The blade C has a cutting edge 0 and is mounted for movement across the opening 16 by a pair of guide members designated generally at G and G, respectively. The guide members G and G are of identical construction, I
each comprising an upper plate 17 and a lower plate 18 secured toeach other by means of a screw 19 and to the plate P by means of screws 20. The plates 17 and 18 are associated to provide channels in which the blade C is slidably fitted so that the latter is free to move within the guide members and transverselv of the opening 16, as clearly shown in Fig. 3. As shown in Figs. 3 and 4, the blade C is urged in the direction of the feed bar B by a leaf spring 21 which is provided with a head 21 that bears. against one edge of the blade. The spring 21 is supported in a socket 22 formed on one end of a plate 22, as clearly shown in Fig. 6. such plate being secured to the under side of the slide plate P as shown in dotted lines in Figs. 2 and 4. By means of screws 23 which work in slots 22 formed in the plate, the plate as a unit is adjustable longitudinally to properly adjust the spring 21 with respect to the blade C.
As illustrated to advantage in Fig. 4, the cutting edge cof the blade C in its normal position is spaced from the adjacent forward edge of the opening 16 so as to provide a slot 16*, and arranged adjacent the opposite ends of this slot are lips 18 formed on the confronting edges of the plates 18.
Coacting with the horizontal blade C are a pair of blades C and C which are secured for vertical reciprocating movement by means of a clamp K secured to the lower end of theshaft S. As shown in Fig. 5, the clamp K'compriSes a sleeve 2a secured to the shaft S by a set screw and provided with an extension 26 having laterally disposed wings 27 and 27' 011 which the blades 0 and C respectively, aresupported. As illustrated to advantage in F ig. 2,'the' wings 27 and 27 are obliquely disposed so that the blades'C' and C assume corresponding positions, for a purpose which will be hereinafter described. As shown in Fig. 5, the
blades 0 and C are adjusted vertically upon the wings 27 and 27 by means of screws 28 and 28 which work in slots 29 and 29 formed in the blades C and C respectively. As shown in the same figure, the lower edges 30 and 30 respectively of the blades C and C are inclined downwardly from the inner vertical edges and are beveled to provide cutting edges which'are adapted to coact with the cuttingedgelo of the blade C. The purpose of this arrangement of the cutting edges of the blades C andC is to secure a shearingaction when they contact with the cutting edge ofv the blade C so that a proper cutting is effectedof the strips of paper of which the ornamental rope is comprised;
For feeding the strips'of paper-to the apparatus, I provide apair of arms A and A which are tapered toward their free ends as shown in Fig. 2, and areconstructed to provide coacting guide channels. As shown in Fig. 2, the arms A and A are provided with extensions 31 and 251 respectively, at points intermediate their ends, such extensions being secured to the table T by means of screws :32. The" forward or smaller ends of the arms A and A when in proper position are disposed between theguide members G and G so that when the strips of paper are introduced to therearor larger ends of the arms they can be moved forwardly through the'arms and into proper position with relation tothe blades U, C and C- l In operation, the strips of paper of which the ornamental rope isto be formed are fed into the arms A and A in the manner previously described until their free ends are disposed between the presser' foot F and the feed bar" B. An attachment of the character described comprising, guide members, a blade slidable in said guide members, a spring for urging the blade to a predetermined position, means for adjusting said spring to vary the urged position of the said blade, a pair of obliquely disposed blades having inclined cutting edges, and a pair of lips formed on said guide members for the purpose described.

An apparatus of the character described comprising, a table, a plate slidable in the table, a feed bar movable in the table and plate, a reciprocating presser foot, a reciprocating needle, guide members carried by the plate, a blade slidable in said guide members, means for urging the blade to a predetermined position, a pair of blades movable With said needle, and at right angles to the first blade, said pairof blades being obliquely disposed with relation to each other and having inclined cutting edges, and feeding arms supported on said table and extending between said guide members.

A cutting apparatus comprising, a plate mounted for sliding movement, means for urging said plate to a predetermined position, and a pair of reciprocating blades movable at right angles to the first plate, said pair of blades being obliquely disposed with respect to each other and adapted to engage the cutting edge of the first blade in a manner to move the latter against said urging means to effect a shearing action between the blades.
10. A cutting apparatus comprising, a plate mounted for sliding movement, means for urging the blade to a predetermined position, a pair of cutting blades movable at right angles to the first blade and adapted to engage the cutting edge of the latter in a manner to move the plate against said urging means, said pair of blades being adjustable and having inclined cutting edges.
