a IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII! l'nyewfav F M @louyh FRED. M. CLOUGI-I, OF BRYANT, SOUTH DAKOTA.
. TYPEWRITER-DESK.
Application filed October 29, 1919.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, FRED. M. CLOUGH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bryant. in the county of Hamlin and State of South Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Typewriter- Desks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others Skilled'ln the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
M 1 invention relates to improvements in office desks having means for supporting a typewriter. I a
An important object of this invention is to provide a desk having a typewriter compartment and novel means for supporting a typewriter whereby the same may be readily brought to an operative position and returned to a compartment for concealing the same from view for the purpose of protection from dust.
A further object of this invention is to provide novel means for elevating the typewriter support upon being withdrawn from the compartment.
A further object of this invention is to provide a typewriter desk having a turn table mounted thereon and which is adapted for supporting the typewriter in any desired position with relation to the desk.
A further object of this invention is to provide a desk having a typewriter support which is neat, of highly simplified construction and simple to operate.
A further object of this invention is to provide a typewriter support of the char acter described which is durable in use and cheap to manufacture.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this application and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,
Figure 1 is a perspective of a desk having my improved typewriter support.
Fig. 2 is a transverse section through the desk showing the support arranged within a typewriter receiving compartment,
Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section through the desk, showing the support extended and the table of the same elevated,
Fig. 4 is a transverse section through the typewriter receiving compartment.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 4, 1921.
Serial H0. 334,114.
Fig. 5 is a perspective of a locking device embodied in the invention, 7
Fig. 6 is a detail sectional view showing the locking means for the inner end of the platform.
Fig. 7 is a plan view of a portion of the table showing the rotary turn table.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this application and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same, the numeral 10 generally designates a desk having a flat top 11 and a vertical row of drawers 12 down one side. A central drawer 13 is arranged beneath the top 11 and at one side of a compartment 14. As indicated in Fig. 2, the compartment 1 1 extends transversely of one side of the desk and is rectangular in shape. A plurality of spaced rollers 15 are mounted in the bottom of the compartment and are adapted to be readily removed for the purpose of replacement. As indicated in Fig. 8, the compartment 14 receives a rectangular platform 16 adapted to slidably engage the anti-friction rollers 15 during its inward and outward movement. A pair of brackets ends to the inner walls of the compartment 18 and at their lower ends 19 to the intermediate portion of the platform. The arms or brackets 17 are hinged intermediate their ends as indicated at 20 to permit of the movement of the platform inwardly and outwardly.
End walls 22 are horizontally hinged to the platform 16 as indicated at 23 and have their upper ends horizontally hinged to a top wall at as indicated at 25. A turn table 26 is rotatably mounted on a vertical shaft 27 carried by the top wall 2 1, and is adapted for supporting a typewriter. A locking arm 28 is carried by the top wall 24: and is provided at its free end portion with a slot 29 adapted to receive a pin 30 carried by one of the end walls 22. WVhen it is desired to lock the top wall 24: in an elevated position, the arm 28 is engaged with the pin 30. lVhen elevated, the top wall 24; may raise the typewriter about seven and one-half inches. A manipulating element 31 is carried by one of the end walls 22 for raising and lowering the top wall 24.
For locking theplatform in an extended position I have provided a spring actuated catch 32 having a handle 38. When it is desired to return the platform to a closed position, the handle of the catch 32 is elevated and thereby released from its locked position. When the platform and the typewriter are pushed within the eompa-rtment they are effectively protected from dust and concealed from view.
A door 34 is horizontally hinged as indicated at 35 to the front of the compartment 14 and is provided with a suitable lock 86.
When it is desired to use my improved typewriter support, the door 84: is opened and the platform 16 broughtto an extended position. The end walls 22 are subsequently elevated and the typewriter simultaneously elevated.
The arm 29 is now locked with the pin 31 for retaining the top wall 24: elevated.
The'turn table'26 permits the typewriter mounted on the same to be adjusted to any desired position.
lVhile I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it
is understood that such minor changes in arrangement and construction of parts may .be made as will remain withln the spirit of the typewriting machine. It will also be seen'that by disposing the leaves 22 which are horizontally hinged and constitute the connection between the platform and the table 24: in a vertical position when the apparatus is extended for use, anyvibrations communicated to the table are conveyed directly to and resisted by the platform braced as above indicated. The catch 29 serves as the means for maintaining the V leaves 1n the indicated upright positlon.
carrying a vertically movable tab Having thus described my invention, what I claim is V l. A typewriter cabinet having a receiving compartment, a drawer platform movable into and 'out of the compartment and carrying a vertically movable table connected with the platform by horizontally-y hinged swinging leaves, means for locking the leaves in an upright position and an extensible brace connecting the platform at midlength with the walls of the compartment for supporting the same when extended.v 7 p H 2. A typewriter cabinet having'a receiving. compartment, a drawenplatform movable into and out of the compartment and nected with the platform by horizontally hinged swinging leaves, means for locking the leaves in an upright position and an extensible brace connecting the platform at midlength with the walls of the compartment for supporting the same when extended, said platform being provided at its rear or inner edge with a catch for locking 16 con- 7 the same in its advanced orjextended position with the said brace under tensile strain.
A typewriter cabinet having a 'receiv ing compartment, a drawer platform movable into and out of the compartmentand carrying a vertically movable table connected with the platform by horizontally hingedswinging leaves, means for locking the leaves in an upright position and an ex- ,tensible brace connecting the platform at midlength with the walls of the compartment for supporting the same when 6X- tended, said platform being provided at its rear or inner edge with a catch for locking 'the same 111 1ts advanced'or extended posi tion with the said brace under tensile strain,
and the compartment having its floor provlded with anti-friction rollersupportmg means for $21161 platform.
In testimony whereof'l afiixm signature in presence of two witnesses, 7
' FRED. M. CLOUGH.
