To all whom it may concern r Be it known that I, EUGENE J. RAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Beverly, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Skiving-liiachines; and Ido hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which itappertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to skiving machines, and more particularly to machines of this character which comprise a rotary tubular skiving knife, a presser foot, and a feed roll, arranged to ated upon, and feeding it against the knife.
The objectof the 1nvent1on is to so molsten the knife of a mach ne of this character that it will operate successfuly upon rubber,
rubber stock or similar plastic or semi-plastic material. To this end means 18 provided ,fcrapplying a thin filmof moisture to the knife at its edge and for such distance back from its edge so that therewill be no ad hesion of the stock to the periphery of the knife as it passes from under the presser foot at the point of operation of the knife.
The means which is preferably utilized for supplying the moisture so that it will be evenly and uniformly distributed over the requisite surface both within and without the knife edge, and in such quantities that it will not be thrown off to an objectionable extent by centrifugal force, comprises a spring operated carrier adapted to present a moistening pad to the edge and outer surface of the knife and to press'it continuously against the periphery of the knife.

A preferred form of the invention is shown in the drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation showing so. much of a skiving machine as is necessary to illustrate cooperate with the presser foot in positioning the material'to be operthe application of the present invention thereto. Fig. 2 is a side elevation and Fig- 3 is a detail section view on line 3, 3, Fig. l.
In the drawings theinvention is shown applied to a skiving machine similar in construction and mode of operation to the machine shown and described in Patent No. 1,301,283, April 22, 1919. This machine is provided with a rotary tubular knife 2, a yielding feed 170ll4 and with a presser foot whichis-supported in fixed position, and determines the angle of the skiving. -The presser foot is shown in the form of a conical roll 6, mounted on an adjustable lever 8, which is in turn mounted on a vertically adjustable slide 10, corresponding to the presser foot slide of the above patent;
In embodying the preferred form of the inventionin this machine a moistening pad carrier is arranged below the knife and in position to'press a moistening pad against the surface of the knife at and back of its edge. The carrier shown is in the form of a trough 12, pivoted at one end to a'bracket 14 and supported by a spring 16. The bracket may be conveniently secured in proper position with relation t0-the knife by screws 18 and 20, which engage opposite sides of a flange 22011 the machine frame. The trough is so arranged that it underlies the knife edge and the upper edges of the trough are curved to correspond approximately to the curvature of the knife so that the rear side edge will lie close to and conform approximately to the surface of the knife. The moistenin'v pad 24 is car- .r1ed 1n the trough. and its upper surface conforms substantially to the outer surface of the knife. The pad is pressed continuously against the surface of the knife by the action of the spring 16 and since the edge of the knifelies between the sides of the trough the pad also embraces the edge of the knife to some extent and applies a. film of moisture to the surface immediately within the edge, as well as to the outer surface for some distance back from the edge. film and that it is also of such, a character that it will not be quickly rendered lnef fective by continued contact with the rapidly rotating knife. V
