1 Application filed Ju'n'e 17, 1919, Serial No. 3043M. Renewed August 17, 1921, saia .143, 94.
-'- To all whomdt may concern:
1 Be it known that 1, JAMES NEWTON ED- WARDS, acitizen of the United States, resid ing at'Skiato'ok, in the county of Tulsa, State of Oklahoma, have invented a new i and useful Pump-Jack; and I do hereby de- 'clare the following'to be a full," clear-,and
' exact'des'cription of the invention, such as will enable others skilledin'the art to which it appertains to makefand use the same. I
The invention relates to pump acks, and has for its object to provide a pump jack, particularly adapted for use in oil wells and so' constructed that a series of jacks may be connected, by cable to the same 1 source of power, preferably an engine and all of the pump jacks.simultaneouslyoperated. Also to provide a pump jack wherein the greatest efficiency of leverage is attained, at the same time providing a jack wherein the parts are reduced to a min-iinum'an the jack as a whole can be constructed. at a minimumcost.
A further object is to provide an oil pump jack of the walking beam type, wherein one end of said walking beam 15 pivotally secured to a polishing rod or pump rod, the other end of said walking beam having a link connectionto one arm of a pivoted right angle lever, [and means connected to the other arm of said right angle-lever whereby the same maybe oscillated as desired. Also to provide a safety means whereby if the polishing rod should break. the upward movement of the beam will be limited thereby preventing agreat deal of work in restoring the same to normal position, or if the operating cable connected to the pivoted .right angle lever should break the movement thereof will be limited;
" ith the above andfother'o l in View:
the invention resides in the combinationand' arrangement of parts as. hereinafter set,
Fig.2 1s a longitudinal section view Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken on line HiofFig. 1. I Referring to "the drawings, the numeral 1 designates a base, whichbasecomprises the longitudinal beams 2. Secured to said beams as at3 are upwardly extendingstand ards 4, the upper ends ofsaid standards being secured to hearing blocks 5. A walking beam 6 is provided, said walking beam 6 receive transverse portion '14 or the con nec'tlng loop15,"lower transverse bar 16 of said'loop "15 beingv disposed'in anotch 17of arm 18 of a right angle lever 19, Said right angle 'leverbeing pivotally mounted,
on apin' 2O whichpin is supported in bear ings 21 carried by the basepieces 2. Arm 22 of the right angle lever extends upwardly and is provided at its upper end with a -wear;-plate 23, said wear plate having'a series of transversely disposed notches 24:, which notches are adapted to receive the transverse portion 25 of a link 26. Secured to the link 26 as at 27 is a cable 28 which cable may lead and be connected to several other pumps and be connected to an engine whereby an oscillating pullmay be imparted to the same, whichoscillatingpull will cause the angle lever :19 to oscillate on its pivotalpoint 20 which oscillation will cause a pull to be imparted to the link 15 in a d0wnward dire ction, "The upper end of link 15 being in engagement with the end 12 of the'walking beam 6 will cause an oscillation to be imparted to the same, the weight'of the polishing rod causing the oscillation in one directionf o A, link29 passes over the end 12 of the walking beam 6 and has its transverse por tion 80 disposed in a notch 31,, the lower end of said link 29 having disposed therein the upper end of the arm 22 of the angle lever, and so positioned therein that the transverse portion 32 will be below the shoulder 33 of the plate 23 a' considerable distance, that is a distance to allowthe free 1 Oscillation of the pivoted lever 19, however if the cable should break the, transverse POI- tion 32 would come into engagement with the shoulder 33 and limit the pivotal action of the angle lever 19,"this pivotal action be: ing caused by the weight of the polishing rod 10. V i
It will be seen that a pumping jack is provided wherein a maximum of leverage is attained, and onewherein it will be impossible for the end of the walking beam to get beyond control.
The invention having been set forth what is claimed-as new anduseful is 1. A pump jack comprising a base mem bert a standard extending upwardly from said base member, a walking beam pivotally mounted'in the upper end of said standard,
lever, in which loop. said upwardlyextend ing arm movesand a limiting stop carried by the upper end of the=upwardly extending arm' and adapted to bezengaged by the loop when power is removed from the oscillating pivoted right angle lever.
2. A pump jack com rising a base member, a standard exten ing'upwardly from said base member, a walking beam pivotall mounted in the upper end of said standar one nd of said walking beam having means whereby the same may be attached toa polishing rod,- the other end 0t said walking beam having a link connection -w1th an end of a horizontal-arm of a pivoted member, said pivotal member having an. upwardly extending arm, means connected to the upper end'of the upwardly extending arm for operating the pivoted member as a whole, a looped member having its lower end disposed over the upwardly extending arm and its other en'd,detachably and pivotally secured to the walking beam said looped member extending upwardly and outwardly, a stop carried by the upwardlyextending arm and disposed above thegtransverse portion of the looped member; said stop forn'nn I means for engaging the looped member an l mlting the "inward niovement ofth'e upwardly Iextending arm when thepivoted member is released. f 1
"In testimony whereofl have signed my name to this specification in the; presence of two subscribing witnesses. 1 g JAMES VNEXVTON EDWARDS.-
