Description
E. s. BLACKBURN.
. IDENTIFYING TAG.
APPLICATION FILED FEB. 28, 1920- 1,392,291'. Patented 001' 4, 1921'.
PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD STUART BLACKBURN, OF AUSTIN, TEXAS.
IDENTIFYING-TAG.
Application filed February 28, 1920.
To aZZ whom it may concern Be it known that I, EDWARD S. BLACK- BURN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Austin, in the county of Travis and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Identifying- Tags, of which the following is a specification, reference being bad therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to identifying-tags formed of sheet metal, and particularly to those adapted to be associated with a binding-band of a bale, box, and the like. The tag of the invention is arranged especially for use on cotton-bales, but it is adapted also for other use.
It is an object of the invention so toform a tag of that kind that it may be associated with a'binding-band or the like in such manner that it is not liable to become displaced from the thing it identifies; and, with that in view, the tag is such that it lies fiat against the band, it does not protrude andbecome susceptive of being torn off, and it does not buckle.
Another object of the invention is to provide a tag that can be made economically by few and simple operations and with little, if any, waste of material.
When read in connection with the description herein, the characteristics of the invention will be apparent from the accompanying drawing, forming part hereof, wherein a n embodiment of the invention is disclosed, for purposes of illustration.
Like reference-characters refer to corresponding parts in the views of the drawing, of which Figure 1 is a plan view of the outer side;
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the under side; and
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view.
Having more particular reference to the drawing, 4: designates a body or plate portion of the tag, the outer side of which is adapted to have anidentifying-legend displayed thereon.
The body is of sheet metal, of the length and width required for the particular pur- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 4, 1921.
Serial No. 361,998.
pose for which the tag is to be used. In the form disclosed herein, the body is of substantially oblong shape and of a character suitable for use on cotton-bales.
The two lesser opposite marginal portions of the body are bent over upon themselves to alford loop portions 5, and each of those portions embraces or extends around one side of an elongated round-wire loop 6.
The body portion may be formed with practically no waste of material by cutting blanks of proper size from sheet-metal stock and then bending over opposite marginal portions to form the loop-embracing parts. I
The loops 6 are of a size to permit a binding-band A to be disposed therein and under the body. They have substantially straight and parallel longer sides, and they may be formed in any. suitable manner by bending proper lengths of wire stock. The bent-over portions 5 of the body bind the embraced sides of the loops reasonably tight, but the loops still may be swung sufficiently to permit a binding-band to pass therethrough.
Preferably the abutting ends of the wire forming a loop 6 are positioned in the longer side that is embraced by the bent-over portion of the body.
Each loop is of just the width between its longer sides to permit a binding-band to pass therethrough, and thus the body of the tag is held closely to the band.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A tag comprising a substantially flat sheet-metal body devoid of surface projections in its median portion arranged to have either side of the body lie close to a binding-band, and two elongated comparatively narrow loops swingably mounted on the end portions of the body arranged to have a binding-band disposed snugly therein and to hold the body close to the band.
In testimony whereof I aifix my signature.
EDWARD STUART BLACKBURN.
