UNITED STATES EDWIN VERNE FORD,
OF GALENA, KANSAS.
Ermessen:l LUG.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 27, 1921.
Application led January 23, 1920. Serial No. 353,555.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, EDWIN VERNE FORD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Galena, in the county of Cherokee and State of Kansas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Electric Lugs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in terminals for electric conductor wires and has for an object the provision of means for securing a 4terminal to the wire without the use of solder.
Another object is the'provision of a terminal which may bedetachably positioned, so as to adapt it for use with wlres of different lengths, or for use with wires of different diameters. n
With the above and other objects in view, the invention includes an attaching plate, carrying at one end a sleeve, in which is secured spring actuated gripping jaws, the latter being adapted to receive the end of the conductor wire, means beingy provided for clamping the jaws in engagement, so as to securely hold the terminal to the wire.
The invention further includes the following novel features and detailsof construction, to be hereinafter more fully described and illustrated in the accompanying draw- 1n s.
n the drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevation ofthe invention.
Fig. 2.is a longitudinal sectional View.
Fig. 3 is a transverse section.
Referring to the drawings in detail, wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the reference numeral 10 indicates an attachin plate, one end of which is offset and provided withk a sleeve 11, the latter being exteriorly threaded, as indicated at 12. The sleeve 11 has pivotally secured therein, a pair of gripping jaws 14, the latter being provided with teeth or serrations 15 upon their opposed faces and having inclined surfaces 16 upon their outer faces.
The jaws 14 are normally separated at their outer ends under the influence of a spring 17.
Threadedly adjustable upon the sleeve 11, is a binding sleeveI 18, the latter being formed at one end with a restricted opening 19, for the passage of a conductor wire 20, the said wire passing through the sleeve and having the insulation removed from its extremity, which latter is received between the jaws 14, as will be clearly understood. The sleeve 18 is provided with an inclined cam surface 21, upon the interior thereof adjacent the restricted opening 19, the surface 21 being adapted to contact with the inclined surfaces 16 of the jaws 14, to force the latterv together. The opposite end of the attaching plate 10 is provided with an opening 22, to form an, l
eye for attachment to any desired electrical device, such a-s a spark plug.
The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and lminor details of construction and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as properly fall within the scope of the appended claim.
Having described the inventionwhat is claimed is:
A connecting device comprising a hollow member having an'opening in one end thereof, a pair of separate complementary gripping members located within the hollow member and each having a longitudinally extending groove in its opposed face for the reception of the end of a wire, a lspring connecting the members at one end and tapered l extremities provided at the opposite end of said members for engagement with the walls of the opening in the hollow member to force the complementary members to grip the wire.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
EDWIN VERNE FORD.
