Be it known that I, LIVINGSTON A. THOMP- soN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Waukesha, in the county of Waukesha and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Massage Apparatus, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the. accompanying drawings, which are a part of this specification.
The invention relates tus.
In massage treatment it is now common practice to use a motor driven vibrator but in addition to the vibrator treatment the masseur also massages'the patientby what may be termed a pinching process. This pinching process has thus far been done by hand and it is the object of this invention to provide a device, preferably motor driven, for accomplishing this treatment.
The invention further consists in the several features hereinafter set forth and more particularly defined by claims at the conclusion hereof.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view through the device embodying the invention; Fig. 2 is a plan view of the device; Fig. 3 isa plan view of the device, parts being removed; Fig. 4 isa plan view of the top cover; Fig. 5 is an end view of the upper portion of the device.
The numerals 6 designate massaging pads to massage apparaor pinching members. These members have base portions 7 carrying beveled guide tongues 8 slidably mounted in beveled guide slots 9 in the upper end 10 of a casing or support 11.
This support has a handle portion 12 having a hollow interior 13, bores 14 and 15 communicating with the ends of the interior 13, and a cylindrical cavity 16 in its top communicating with the bore 14.
The usual flexible motor driven shaft 17 has its end portion 18 mounted in a coupling member 19 and detachably keyed or otherwise connected to a shaft 20. The member 19 is mounted in the bore 15 and is provided with an annular groove 21 to receive the end of a set screw 22 carried by the support to secure said member against withdrawal from said support. An elliptical cam block 24 has a squared recess 25 centrally located in its bottom to receive the squared end 23 of the shaft 20 to which it is clamped by a screw 26.
The block 24 has a cam groove 27 therein of elliptical outline in which pins 28 carried by the bases 7 of the pads 6 are mounted, said pins being spaced from the tongues 8 so as to prevent interference of said tongues with the cam.
A cover plate 29 is secured to the top of the device and is provided with grooves 30 to permit free movement ofthe tongues 8 and with slots or grooves 31- to permit free movement of the pins 28.
With the above construction, the rotation of the shaft 20 causes the cam member to act upon the pins" 28 and through them to move the pads 6 toward and away from each other, the shaft 2O being preferably driven at ahigh rate of speed. The moving pads being applied to the flesh on their inward movement cause a pinching of the flesh in imitation of the pinching process heretofore performed by hand.
It is to be understoodthat this invention is not limited to any specific form or arrangement of parts except in so far as such limitations are specified in the claims.
What I claim as my invention is:
l. In a massaging device, the combination of a support, a shaft journaled therein, a cam on said shaft, massage members operatively connected to said cam and moved thereby toward and away from each other parallel to the plane of rotation of said cam, and guide means for said members disposed at right angles to said shaft.
2. In a massaging device, the combination of a support having a fiat faced end, massage members slidably mounted on and moving parallel to the flat surface of said end, and means for moving said members toward and away from each other.
3. In a massaging device, the combination of a support having a recess therein, a rotating grooved cam mounted in said recess, and a pair of massage pads slidably mounted on said support and provided with pins running in the groove of the cam whereby ward and away from each other on the move- 10 said pads are moved toward and away from ment of the cam.
