Lanterns, of which the following is a specification;
invention relates to self contained electric lanterns particularly suitable for use as railway signal and switch lights.
The object of my invention is to provlde an electric lantern of this type which isof simple and cheap construction and yet which will be durable and thoroughly reliable in use. Y I
Referring to the accompanylng drawings,
Figure 1 is a side view of my lantern with the lower portion thereof in section.
Fig. 2 is a plan view with the cover removed.
Fig. 3 is a detail view illustrating the switch connections for controlling the lights.
The lamp comprises a cylindrical sheet metal container 1., having a hinged cover 2 and a bail or handle 3.
by a circular wire.
Attached to the lower end of the container is an open wire frame in which are supported and thereby protected, electrlc moandescent lamps'o and 6 preferably of red and white color, respectively, the said frame consisting of a plurality of stiff outwardly bowed wires held at their outer hooked ends Une terminal of the lower lamp '5 is electrically connected with the metallic container and the other terminal is connected by an insulated wire 7 with the lower insulated contact of a slidable switch 8 mounted on the exterior of the container near its upper end. The container has on its bottom a plurality of layers of alternate insulating and conducting strips or disks. Qne terminal of the upper lamp is connected with the metallic container while the other terminal is connected to the lower conducting strip or disk, the latter being connected with the insulated conductor 9 which is connected to the upper'contact of said sliding switch. One pole of the battery or cell held by the container is adapted to contact with a button 10 attached to the upper of said contact strips or disks, the latter being connected to the insulating wire 11 whlch 1S connected electrically to the sliding switch '8. The other pole of said battery or cell 1s connected to the metallic container. It will ELECTRIC LANTERN.

therefore be apparent that when said switch is moved to its upper position the circuit through the light 6 will be closed. When moved to its lower position the circuit through the lower light 5 will be closed and when said switch is in an intermediate position both circuits will be open.
The lantern also includes a reflector 12 supported on-the bottom of the cylindrical container and adapted to reflect-the light rays and direct them downward for the purpose of. illuminating the ground or objects below.
As indicated in Fig. 1, bail 3 may be made either rigid with the container or capable of swinging movement with respect thereto. This is accomplished by providing a swinging bracket 13 on each side ofthe container for receiving in one position the two ends of the bail and thus holding the latter rigid with respect to the container. By removing the bail and swinging the brackets down and then inserting the ends of the bail in suitable apertures in the container the rigid connection is changed to pivoted connection.
Iclaimz- 1. A self contained electric lantern comprising a sheet metal container adapted to hold a cell or battery and having an open wire frame attached to its lower end, a plurality of layers of alternate insulating and conducting disks arranged in the bottom of insulated contact adapted to be contacted by said switch button, the remaining terminals of said lamps being connected electrically to the metallic container, the other pole of the battery being adapted for connection with the container, and a reflector supported by the bottom of said container above the lamps.
2. A self contained electric lantern comby an insulated conductor with a second prising a sheet metal container adapted to hold a cell or battery and'having an open wire frame attached to its lower end, a plurality of layers of alternate insulating and conducting, disks arranged in the bottom of said container, a switch button slidably said switch button, upper and lower incansaid conducting disks, the latter being con- 'nected with an insulated contact adapted to descent lamps supported in said open wire frame, one terminal of the upper lamp being electrically connected with the lower of be contaoted said switch button, one terminal of the lower lamp being connected by an insulated conductor with a second insulated contact adapted to be contacted by said switch button, the remaining terminals of said lamps being connected electrically to the metallic container, the other pole of the battery being adapted for connection with the container.
3. Aself contained electric lantern, comprising a container adapted to hold a cell or battery, an open wire frame attached to its lower end, a pair of lamps of different colors supported in said frame and arranged one above the other, a reflector attached to the bottom of the container above the lamps and adapted to serve each of the lights, electrical connection for supplying energy from said battery to said lamps, and a switch controlling said connections for opening the lamp circuits or independently closing the same.
