Topeka, in the county of Vnut or bolt is LOUIS A. EDWINSON,
PATENT OFFICE.
OF yTOPEKA, KANSAS;
BATCHET-WRENCH.
T o all u: hom it may concern Be it known that I, LoUis A. EnwrNsoN, al citizen of the United States, residing at Shawnee and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ratchet-VVrenches, ofwhich the following is a specification.
This invention relates to ratchetwrenches and has special reference to aratchet wrench designed to reach bolts and nutsin places inaccessible by an ordinary wrench.
One important object of the invention is to improve the general constructionl of wrenches of this character. v Y
A. secondimportant object of the invention improved arrangement of for such wrenches. ratchet wrench having a Spring frequently happens that a too loose to overcome the pressure of the spring on the pawl and permit backward movement of the pawl relative to the ratchet-v when the handle of the wrench is moved to obtain a fresh grip on the ratchet. Consequently the wrench will In using a pressed pawl it not operate effectively.
A third object of the present invention is to provide, in a ratchet wrench, supplemental ratchet means whereby the wrench may be effectively operated on a bolt or nut irrespective of its looseness.
lith the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in general'o'f certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanyingdrawings, and specifically claimed.
In the accompanyingy drawings, like characters of reference indicate like parts in the several views, an
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a wrench constructed in accordance with this invention. Y
Fig. 2 is a plan thereof.
Fig. 3 is a section on the Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a section on the line L1--4c of. Fig. 3.
In the embodiment of the invention herein illustrated there is provided a body member 10 preferably in the form of a fiat bar having a handle 11 formed on one end and having the other end 12 offset from the' axis of the handle and provided with a bearing opening 13. Mounted on this body is Z- shaped member 1,4: having a bearing opening line 3*-3 of Specification of Letters Patent.

15 vformed therein in alinement with the opening 13, the end of this member containing the opening being 'spaced-from the body end 12. Between these -two ends'is llocated a main ratchet member 16 having a journal 17 mounted inthe opening 13 anda journal 18 mounted in the opening 15 The'journal 18 is prolonged beyond the bearing and carries on its end a wrench socket 19 which is detachably mounted on the journal projection by means of a screw 20. Surrounding the ratchet 16 is a housing 21 having a substantially cylindrical body and mounted on the journal 17 to revolve freely thereon. This housing has'the end, throughv whichthe journal 18 projects, closed by-a plate 22. Projecting from one side of the housing is 23 having a radial opening 24 therethrough which has an enlarged portion 25 at its inner end. Through thepopening 2 projects the stem 26 of a pawlfwhich has a beveled head 27 engaging the ratchet 16,` a spring 28 being located in the openingportion 25 between said head and the interior end of this portion of said opening. Through the stem 26 extends a cross pin 29 and in the lug 23 are formed opposed notches 30 in which the cross pin normally sits. By means of this arrangement the pawl may be turned to face in either direction with respect to the ratchet as it may be moved outward by grasping the stern 26 and may then be rotated 180 degrees. Moreover the pawl may be held out of engagement with the ratchet by moving it outward and rotating it j that the cross pin will engage the face of the lug and will not enter thev notches.
Depending from the sides of the bar 10 is a pair of lugs 31 between which is' an opening 32.` Through this opening passes an operating lever 33 fulcrumed on a bolt 34 passin through said lugs. This lever is provide at one end with a handle 35 and has connected to its other end one end of a link 36 which has its other end connected to a lug extension 37 on the housing 21. By oscillating this handle 35 the housing and the pawl are given an oscillatory motion and, with the socket holding a comparatively tight bolt or nut, the ratchet will be given the usual intermittent rotary movement.
Additional means are employed to insure proper motion to the ratchet in case of loose nuts or bolts. To this end there is mounted one quarter turn so ratchet 38 and on the Vmember 14 is pivoted through oscillations of said handle.
a double paWl 39 having a finger controlledV 2. ratchet Wrench having a body pro- 35y end 40. In operating the device on loose vided with a handle at one end, a socket nuts the main pawl is withdrawn. Then, revolubly mounted at the other` end of the by oscillating the handle 1l and moving body, an operating lever pivoted tov the the supplemental pavvl alternately into and body, a pair of independent ratchets conout of engagement with its ratchet the nut nected to the socket in fixed relation thereto, 40 may be tightened sufliciently to permit use a Vpawl operatively associated with one of of t e main pawl and ratchet which are said ratchets, an operative connection bemanner above set forth. pawl pivotally. supported from the body to l There has thus been provided a simple oscillate therewith and having operativey as- 45 and eflicient device of the lkind described sociation with the second ratchet.
