DOOR AND GATE AOTUATING MECHANISM.
To all whom it may] concern .Be it known that I, VIo'roR LINDER, a subject of the King of Sweden, residing at Elko, in the county of Scott and State of Minnesota, have invented certain newand useful Improvements in Door and Gate Actuating Mechanisms; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as willenable others skilled in the art to which it; appertains to make use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in door and gate actuating mechanism, and, to this end, it consists of the novel devices and combinations of devices hereinafter described and defined in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate the invention, like characters indicate like parts throughout the several views.
. Referring to the drawings Figure .l is a plan view of the invention;
Fig. 2 isa longitudinal vertical section takenon the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 3'isa detail'view with some parts shown in section taken on the line 33 of Fig. 2 with the adj acent door open.
The numeral 4 indicates double swinging doors or gates hinged at their outer vertical edges to posts 5 for horizontal swinging movement. The posts 5 are tied together by a sill-6iand a top bar 7. Each door 4 is closed by a coiled spring 8 anchored at one of its ends to the upper edge of the respective door and at its other end to the top bar 7. A spring-projected lock-bolt 9 provided for locking each door closed. The easings of these'lock-bolts 9 are secured to the inner facesof the doors 4 near their free vertical edges at the tops thereof for engagement with lock-plates 10 secured to the underface of the top bar 7.
On each side of the doors 4 are outer and I inner transverse sills 11 and 12, respectively.
To the outer ends of each sill 11 is secured a-pair of posts 13 and to the outer ends of each sill 12 is secured a pair of posts 14. All of the posts 5, 13 and 14, on each sideof the road, are connected'by longitudinal rails 15 secured to the tops of the posts 13 and 14.
To each sill 12 is secured bearings 16 in which are journaled a air. of door-opening and lock-releasing cran s 17 arranged in the wheel tracks to be engaged by the wheels of a moving vehicle. Cables 18 connect the Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Sept. 27, 19.21-
Application' filed November 24,1919. Serial" No. 340,272.
cranks 17 to eyes 1'9 secured 'in the front faces of the doors 4. These cables 18 are extended through guide .eyes 20, on the rails 15, and are of such length as to hold the crank'17 raised when the doors 4 are closed. To release the lock-bolts 9, branch cables 21 have one of their ends attached to the lower endsfof said lock-bolts and theirother ends are attached to the cables 18 near the eyes 19. The length of the branch cables '21 is such that the spring-held lock-bolts 9 lift the cables 18 a little so that the initial downward movement of the cranks 17, by the engagement of vehicle wheels 'the-rewit'l'i, will release said lock-bolts, and further downward movement of said' cranks will open the doors 4 through'the cable connections 18 and tension springs 8.
'Iohold the doors 4 open against the action of the springs 8, while avehic'le is passing therethrough, springactuated latches 22 are pivoted in bearings 23 on the rails 15 and arranged to engage latch-plates 24 on the free edges of said doors. Each latch 22 is provided with a crank arm =25 to which is attached two oppositely extended cables'26. The outer ends of the cables 26 areattached to latch-releasing cranks 27 journaled in bearings 28 secured to the sills 11 and extend through guide eyes 29, certain of which are arranged to cause said cables'to give a downward pull on the cranks 27 when the wheels of a vehicle pass over said cranks 27 to 'lift thelatches 22 out-of engagement with the latch-plates 24. In place of the guide eyes 20 and 29, :guide sheaves may be substi tuted therefor.
It will be noted that the throw of the cranks 27 is considerably less than that of the cranks 17 and are located sufficiently outward from said cranks 17 to permit a vehicle to stand therebetween without engaging the cranks 17 and 27 A vehicle passing toward the doors 4, for instance from the left in respect to Fig. 2, will first passover the left-hand cranks 27 r and operate. the latches 22-, which, of course,is-an idle movement as the doors 4 are closed. Further movement of the vehicle toward the'doors 4 will cause its wheels to passover the cranks 17 and, as previously stated, the initial downward movement thereof, through the cables 18 and 21, will release the lock-bolts 9, and a further downward movement of said cranks 17 will swing the doors 4 open and cause the same to be held open the automatic interlocking engagement of the latch-plates 24 with the latches 22. After the vehicle has passed through the doorclosed under the action of the springs 8. A
vehicle moving in the opposite direction from that just described will, of course, release the lock-bolts9 and open the doors 4 by the depression of the right-hand cranks l7 and release the, latches 22 to permit the doors to close by the depression of the lefthand cranks 27. I
