THERMIONIC VALVE FOR USE IN WIRELESS TELEGRAPHY AND TELEPHONY.
Specification of Letters Patent.

Be it known that I, HORACE ST. JOHN on AULK DoNIsTHoRPn, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at 5 Chancer Lane, London, W. C. 9, 1n the county of ondon, England, have lnvented a new and useful Improved Thermiomc Valve for Use in Wireless Telegraphy and Telephony, (for which I have filed anapplication in England Dec. 23,- 1919, No. 32,244,) of which the following is a speclficatlon;
This invention relates to an improved thermionic valve for use in wireless telegraphy and telephony.
According to this invention hollow hemispherical plate and grid electrodes or surfaces are employed in combination with a stralght or loop filament source of the cathode rays.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1, is a view in elevation of an 1mproved valve and Fig. 2, is a plan view of Fig. 1 partly in section.
In the drawing 1 designates a vacuum vessel containing a glass pedestal 2 mounted in a holder 3 in the usual manner. Within the vessel 1 is arranged a hollow hemispherical plate electrode or surface 4 supported by one or more wires 5 sealed into the pedestal and connected electrically 1n the known manner to one of the plugs 6. Within the hemispherical electrode or surface 4: is arranged a similarly or correspondingly shaped electrode or surface 7 supported by one or more wires 8 electrically connected to one of the plugs. Within or adjacent the hemispherical grid 7 a loop filament 9 is disposed as shown and connected by leading in wires 10 to two of the plu s.
The form of the plate and grid electrodes or surfaces is that of a hollow hemisphere arranged so that they are nested one within the other and when assembled form a substantially uniform gap between.
The preferred form of filament is that of a loop disposed concentrically in one diametral plane of the shrouding electrodes or surfaces. A straight filament may be employed and disposed within or just without or partly without the space contained by the hollow hemispherical grid electrode. Generally the filament will take a form in the direction of its length substantially similar to the form of the shrouding electrodes or surfaces in elevation or plan view.
The advantages of the arrangements above described are that the cathode stream is more uniformly distributed than when the ordinary plate type of electrode is employed and consequently disintegration is more uniformly distributed, thereby increasing the life of the valve also the arrangement serves to damp down or eliminate microphonio disturbances or noises.
I claim. I
1. In a thermionic valve for use in wireless telegraphy and telephony, the combination of a hollow hemispherical plate electrode with a grid electrode formed as a hollow hemisphere adapted to damp out mechanical vibration and microphonic disturbances and a filament adjacent to said grid, substantially as described.
2. A thermionic valve as claimed in claim 1 having its filament arranged within the hemispherical space inclosed by the grid electrode.
3. A thermionic valve as claimed in claim 1 having a uniform gap between the plate and grid electrodes and a uniform gap between the grid and the filament in one diametral plane;
4. In a thermionic valve for use in wireless telegraphy and telephony the combination within said valve of a hollow hemispherical plate electrode with a hollow hemispherical grid electrode nested within said plate electrode and a filament adjacent to said grid. v
5. In a thermionic valve for use in wireless telegraphy and telephony the combination within said valve of a hollow hemispherical plate electrode with a hollow hemispherical grid electrode nested within said plate electrodev and a filament within the space inclosed by said grid.
6. In a thermionic valve for use in wire-- less telegraphy and telephony the combination within said valve of a hollow hemispherical plate electrode with a hollow hemispherical grid electrode nested within said plate electrode and a loop filament arranged v in one diametral plane of said grid.
7. In a thermionic valve for use in wireless telegraphy and telephony the combination within said valve of a hollow hemispherical plate electrode with a concentric hollow hemispherical grid electrode nested within said plate electrode, an uniform gap between said grid and plate electrode, a filament and an uniform ga grid and filament in one diametral plane.
8.-In a thermionic valve for use in wireless telegraphy and telephony reception the combination within said valve of concentric 10 hollow hemispherical plate and grid electrodes and a filament whereby microphonio disturbances are damped or eliminated.
