y Specification of Letters Patent. .Patented Sept. 205221921..
Application filedv aiiuary21, 1,921. .Serial No, 438,839.
To' all whom it may conce/ra.'
Ee it known that I,'I-IY1\1AN F. ChiaaiKnN, a citizenof the United States, residing at Reading, in the county of Berks and yState ofl Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toothbrushes, of which the followingv is a specification.
' This invention relates to improvements in tooth brushes, and the object in the present instance is to provide in the first place, a thoroughly sterile brush.
Another object is to provide a brush which may conveniently be carried inthe pocket, somewhat in the manner of 'a fountain pen, and in which this sterile condition will be at all times maintained.
A further object is to provide means for carrying a supply of tooth paste or lotion within the container in which the brush is carried.
A further object is to provide a removable handle which may serve as a closure for one compartment of the container, and also for a handle for the brush member.
The invention is more fully described in the following specification and clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of my device with the relative parts in their proper positions, but with the closure cap for the sterilizing chamber open. i
Fig. 2 is an outside, side elevational view l of my device.
Fig. 3 1s a sectional view taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 1. Y v
The numeral 1 designates a container, which may be made of hard rubber, or other like material, and which is formed of two compartments, 2 and 3, both of which are open at one end. The compartment '2 is screw-threaded internally at its open end to receive the end of a screw threaded handle member 4. This handle member, in addition to the external thread 5, is also formed with an internal thread, for a purpose tobe described later. This compartment 2 is intended to receive and hold a tooth paste tube or like article, 6, and the handle member will serve, when in the position shown in thedrawing, as a closure for this compartment.
The other compartment, 3, 'is designed to receive and carry a tooth brush head 17, and in my present case I form this head with a threaded enlargement 8 at one end.
v This brush head is carried inra receptacle 7, made of "any 'suitablemateriah and adaptedftjo lit looselyin the compartment 3, and to contain, beside the brush head,a s tferilizingagent, preferably in the form ofa gran- 11. The receptacle 7 is `open at one end, and when in position in the compartment 3, it will reach almost to the edge of the compartment, and I provide a V,closure for both ulated substance, designated by thenumeral v the kcompartment 3 and thereceptacle 7, in
the form of a'single cap 12, attached to the container 1 by means of a hinge 13 and provided with a catch 14 for holding it in closed position. This cap bears against the end of the container and closes the compartment 3, and it isformed with a lug 15 adapted to enter the open end of the receptacle 7 and form a closure therefor.
Thebrush head is normally carried in the container, as illustrated, and when it is desired to use it, the cap is opened, and the brush head removed. The handle 4 is removed from its engagement with the container compartment 2 and the enlarged screw-threaded end 8 of the brush head is inserted in the internally screw-threaded end 18 of the handle member, when it will be ready for use; and, the act of removing the handle from the container, at the same time exposes the tooth paste tube which may be dropped out ready for use.
The extreme utility of the device is of course evident, and of some consequence, but the most important feature of the invention is the fact that I have provided a tooth brush that will'be kept sterile at all times, because after using it, the moisture still ad- 1. A tooth brush comprising a screw-v threaded handle member, a screw-threaded brushV head, both substantially as described, in combination with a container formed in two compartments, one of which is adapted to receive the handle member and the other the brush head, said handle member forming a closure for the compartment into which it enters, a 'receptacle containing a sterilizing agent for housing the brush head while in the compartment and a closure for both the receptacle and the compartment.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination of a two-part tooth brush, with a container formed in two compartments, one of which is provided with a re'- movable receptacle adapted to hold a sterilizing agent and the brush head, a cap hinged to the container and adapted to close lboth the Vremovable receptacle and the compartment in which the receptacle is located; the other compartment being screw threaded and adapted to receive the end of handle portion of the two part brush, said handle being also screw-threadedto receive the end of the brush head. Y
3. The'combination of a casing made in two compartments, each of which is adapted Y of the 'tooth brus head is located within the container in the c first named compartment.
4. A self sterlizing tooth brush comprising a two part brush,va container for the brush "head, a sterilizing agent within the container, a receptacle or casing for the. container, a closure Vfor theV container, means in the casing for carryin a supply `of tooth paste and means for hol ing the tooth paste in the casing comprising the handle Vmember In testimony whereof aHX my signature.
