The improved installation comprises the combination of a tandem pump which draws into one of its cylinders water taken from the feed water tank and forces the same into a water-heater, and draws into its other cylinder the highly heated water taken from the water-heater and forces the same into the boiler; a water heater and an expansion vessel placed on a level higher than both the level of the feed tank and the level of the hot water. cylinder. of the pump, said expansion vessel being at its upper part in communication with the atmosphere and being also in communication on the one hand, at its lower part with the water heater at the highest point which can be reduced at its upper part either directly with the feed water tank or with the pipe connecting the pump to said tank.
The accompanying drawing shows by way of example an installation according to the invention, as applied to a locomotive.
As shown in the drawing, the present disposition comprises:
A tandem pump 1. I
A feed water heater 2 constituted by a condenser which may be either of the surface of the mixing t pe and may use either the exhaust steam o the engine or residual vapors, or hot gases.
An expansion chamber 3.
The suction inlet of the lower cylinder 4 of the tandem pump 1 is connected by the piping 9 with the feed water reservoir 6 of the tender 7 of the locomotive, or feed tank,
and the delivery orifice ofthe said cylinder by the piping ,13 with the upper part of the heater 2and 'the delivery end of the said The expansion chamber 3 is open at its upper part and its lower part is connected with the highest point reached by the water in the chest proper of the heater 2.
The chamber 3 also has its upper part connected either directly with the water feed tank 6 or with the piping, 9 connecting the suction orifice of the water cylinder 4 with the water feed tank 6. The'upper part of the expansion-chamber 3 is also preferably closed by a strainer.
The orifice 11 by which the pipe 10 connecting the tank 6 with the expansion chamber- 3 opens into this chamber, is constructed in funnel shape.
The expansion chamber 3 is situated at a level which is both higher than that of the water in tank 6 and that of the cylinder 5 of the pump 1.
The operation of the device is as follows:
The pump 1, through the intermediary of the cylinder 4, effects the suction of the feed water into the tank 6 and forces the same into the heater 2.
By means of the cylinder 5, the pump 1 forces into the boiler 8 the heated water.
1. It provides for the filling of the heater 2 and keeps this heater constantly filled.
2-. It supplies an excess of water which provides for the filling of the expansion chamber 3 and therefore affords a sufiicient pressure for the proper working of the cylinder 5, in spite of the high temperature of the water which is delivered by this cylinder.
The orifice of suitable funnel shape 11 which in the present case is placed at the upper part of theexpansion chamber 3, and
the piping 10 connecting this orifice with the feed tank 6, have the effect of obviating all loss of water.
The expansion chamber 3 places the water in the heater 2 in communication with the atmosphere'and thus permits the dischar e of the air and carbonic acid contained in t e water.
The situation of this expansion chamber 3 at a higher level than that of the feed. tank 6 and the pump cylinder 5 have the efiect:
1. Of aflordin a sufiicient ressure to pro vide for the good working 0 the cylinder 5, in spite of the high temperature of the water which it delivers, and this irrespectively of the position of the heater with reference to the pump.
2. Of providing for the discharge of the overflow, thus avoiding all loss of water.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: e
1. An installation for supplying steam boilers with feed water, comprising in combination a feed water tank, a tandem pump havin a cold water cylinder and a hot water cylin er, a water-heater, an expansion vessel in communication with the atmosphere at its upper part, said expansion vessel being located on a level higher than both the level of the feed tank and the level of the hot water cylinder of the pump, means connecting the inlet of the cold water cylinder of the pump to the feed tank andthe outlet to the water-heater, means .connecting the inlet of the hot watercylinder of the pump to the waterheater and the outlet to the boiler, means for connecting the lower part of the expansion vessel with the ,water heater at the highest point which canbe reached by the water in the latter and-means for establishing a communication between the upper part of the expansion vessel and the feed water tank. An installation for supplying steam- .boilers with feed water comprising in combination a feed water tank, a tandem pump havin a cold water cylinder and a hot water cylin er, the cold water cylinder ofthepump having a delivery greater than that of the hot water cylinder,'a water-heater, an expansion vessel in communication with the atmosphere at its u per part, said expansion vessel being locate on a level hi her than both the level of the feed tank an the level of the hot water c linder of the pump, means connecting the inlet of the cold water cylinder of the pump to the feed tank and the outlet to the water-heater means connecting the inlet of the hot water cylinder of the pump to the water heater and the outlet to the boiler, means for connecting the lower part of the expansion vessel with the water heater .at the hlghest point which can be reached .by the water in the latter and means for 'establishing a communication between the upper part of the expansion vessel and the feed water tank.
3. An installation for supplying steamboilers with food water, comprising in combination a feed water tank, a tandem pump havin a cold water cylinder and a hot water cylinfer, a water heater, an expansion vessel -1Il communication with the atmosphere at its upper part, said expansion vessel being located on a level higher than both the level,
h ghest point which can be reached by the water in the latter and means for establishing a communication'between the upper part' of the ex ansion vessel and the feed water tank,'sai means embodying a pipe which opens into the expansion vessel by a flaring funnel-like end.
