JAMES. FOSTER KING, OF GLASGOW, SCOTLAND.
CONSTRUCTION OF SHIPS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 20, 1921.
Application filed October 6, 1920. Serial No. 415,154.
heads give all the transverse strength required, and by so doing to reduce considerably the scantlings of the ordinary transverse frames and floorsthe latter being preferably entirely dispensed withso that they are practically negligible for transverse strength, the stress on the bottom and sides of the vessel being taken up entirely by longitudinal girders of exceptional depth fitted from bulkhead to bulkhead.
The longitudinal web frames or girders may be slotted over the transverse frames, or they may be fitted with a continuous shell connection and the transverse frames connected to the girders by ordinary methods, or to each other by means of joint pieces which pass through the girders.
Two accompanying sheets of explanatory drawings are hereunto appended in which Figures 1 and 2 are half transverse sections and Fig. 3 a longitudinal section of parts of a ship suflicient to show an example of the improved construction.
As shown in the drawings a number of I longitudinal web frames or girders A are fitted over the whole girth of the hullbelow the lowest deck or tier ofbeams. These longitudinal frames are restrained from tripping under stress by angle stays C, and they are held in place by angle bars E and bracket connections G. They are also secured at the ends to closely spaced transverse bulkheads D by means of bulkhead 'stifi'eners J, the angle connections E and brackets H. Between these bulkheads D there are fitted a number of relatively small transverse frames B secured to the longitudinal frames A by the bracket connections G and at the ends by brackets F. The longitudinal web frames A are in this example slotted over the transverse frames B.
The scantlings of the structural members described above will vary with the dimensions of vessels and sizes of tanks or holds therein, and also with heights to which oil or other cargoes rise, and with test head re-' quired.
The following scantlings for instance would apply in the foregoing specification to a vessel whose dimensions are 430' x 57 x 34 6". with an oil cargo Girders A, bot-tom 60" x .46" spaced 7 feet; sides 48" x .42 spaced 8 feet.
Transverse frames B, 8%" X 311; X .46" bulb angle spaced 28%".
Angle stays C, 6 X 34 x .38 every 4th frame.
- Transverse, bulkhead D, .48 bottom to .8" to Longitudinal bulkhead, .52" bottom to .28" top.
Angle bars E, 6 X 6" X .54".
Small brackets F, .38 thick.
Bracket connections G, 8" X 3%" X .38".
Brackets H, 54' sided.
Center line bulkhead stifi'eners J, 7 X 3 x .36 bulb angle spaced 28%.
Transverse bulkhead stiifeners 9" x 3 x .44 bulb angle spaced 28%.
What I claim is 1. An oil-tank ship comprising in combination, a hull, a plurality of exceptionally large widely spaced longitudinal web frames arranged over the girth of the hull below the lowest deck or tier of beams, and a plurality of relatively small longitudinally-spaced transverse frames shaped to conform to the contour, of the ship and connected to said longitudinalweb frames, whereby floors or their equivalent wide spaced bottom transverses maybe dispensed with.
2. An oil-tank ship comprising in combination, a hull, a plurality of transverse bulkheads, a plurality ofexceptionally deep widely spaced longitudinal girders arranged over the girth of the hull and connected to said bulkheads, and a plurality of relatively small transverse frames shaped to conform to the contour of the 'ship, arranged intermediate between said bulkheads and connected to said longitudinalgirders, whereby floors or their equivalent wide spaced bottom transverses may be dispensed with.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
JAMES FOSTER KING.
