which the following is the specification.
This invention. relates to washing machines and gearing therefor, and particularly to dolly construction and dolly operatin mechanism for such machines.
,t is an object of this invention to provide a dolly which acts upon the clothes from below instead of from above, whereby the action of the dolly will not be affected by the amount of clothes in the tub, and a very few clothes may be washed as perfectly as the ordinary full charge for the machine;

, In the drawings, 1 refers to the frame or bench of a washing machine, preferably lower ends in which is mounted the vertical made up of metallic angle bars. 2 represents the tub mounted in said' frame or bench. Preferably cast integral with the plate 8, is the upstanding sleeve 10 having bearings 11 and 12 at its upper and dolly operating shaft 13 having upon its lower end a pinion 14 by which it is driven by mechanism and in a manner now to be described. g
Secured to the top of the shaft 13., as'for instance bythe pin 15, is the sleeve 16 which overlaps the sleeve 10 and is snugly fitted thereabout 011; the integral collar 17 at the bottom of the sleeve 10 'whereb wabbling of the sleeve 16 is prevented. The dolly proper is of a novel form comprising an elongated central hub 20 having a central aperture 21 and. slots 22 so as to be slidable up and down upon the sleeve 16 and to be engaged with the blades 18 thereof to prevent rotative displacement with respect thereto. Projecting radially from the hub 20 are the arms 23 which are rounded on their upper surfaces, as shown at 24, and are provided at their outer ends with the washing blades 25 which roject a consider: able distance upwardly f and downwardly to the level of the bottom of the hub 20. 1 The sides and bottom of the tub are provided with the corrugations 26 which .assist in the stirring action of the dolly in an obvious manner.
In operation the dolly is placed upon the sleeve 16 and slides down thereon until the bottom of the collar 20 rests upon the pins 19 after which the water and clothes maybe placed in the tub and the machine operated in the ordinary fashion, the washing blades 25 gripping the clothes to carry them back and forth in the tub and rubbing them rom the arms 23' against the corrugated sides thereof, and the I corrugations 26 assisting in the stirring ac,- tion. By this means the clothes are operated upon from below and it is immaterial how full a charge is put into the machine, the operation upon the clothes being'the same no matter whether few orniany are being washed at one time. Moreover, the tapered bottom of the tub cooperates with the new form of dolly so as to cause the clothes at all times to come into operative engages ment therewith. I
The pinion 14 on the bottom of the shaft 13 is interposed between the bearing 27 'and the collar 28, the bearing 27 being integral with the bracket 29 which has thereon the upstanding web 30 which is roundedat its outer end. The bracket 29 is preferabl formed integrally with the plate 8, which closes the bottom of the tub.
I The mechanism for driving the pinion 14 comprises a wheel 31 which operates through i 55 provided with outstanding pins or rests 19. In operation, power communicated to the fly wheel 31 will cause the'shaft 13 to oscillate operating the dolly so that the same will act upon the clothes from underneath, as above explained. a
Having now described my invention, "I claim:
1. In a washing machine, a tub compris ing a cor'ru ated bod havin a downwardl g Y 2 y tapered bottom, having a substantially flating blades, the diameter of said dolly being such as to project slightly over said tapered bottom, whereby to ive the maximum rubbing effect on the c othes.
