Be' it known that I,- LABURTON A. GALE, a

1, citizen of the United States, and resident of Belmont, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Index-Cards, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to index cards of the kind which have projecting tabs, and

more particularly to so-called guide cards 7 or divider cards'which are used in index sys tems to separate indexed matter into groups and display index characters appropriate to the several groups. It will be understood, however, that the invention is not limited solely to guide cards,-but is applicable generallyto index cards having tabs.

The principal object of the invention is to produce a novel and improved composite tab which is economical and easy to manufacture and is durable, moisture proof, and wear-resisting in use.

In the accompanying drawings which illustrate a preferred embodiment'of the invention- Figure 1 is a face View of the card having the improved composite tab;

Fig. 2 is an enlarged section through the tab on line 2-2 of Fig. l;

Fig. 3 is a plan or elevation of three of the members of the tab hereinafter described; and

Fig. 4 is a plan showing the form of the cover member of the tab before assembling.

The card body 5 may be made of any usual 'or preferred sheet material such as heavy paper, card-board, fiber board, or the like.

-Attached to the edge of the card body is the composite index tab comprising in its preferred form herein shown, a middle piece 6 and two end pieces 9, 9, all made of sheet celluloid having substantiall the same thick ness as the card body 5. is an aperture made in the middle piece 6 to form a frame for a removable index slip 8 (Fig. 2) which may be made of paper or other suitable sheet material to display index characters.

At each end of the middle piece 6 is an end piece 9. Each end piece 9 is preferably interlocked with or anchored in the card body 5, as by projections 10 which fit into correspondingly shaped recesses in the margin of the card body 5. I

The end pieces 9 close the edges of the tab making the structure both durable and mo1sture-proof, and are held in place partly by the projections anchored in the card body and partly by the folded cover 11 which is attached to the margin of the card body. folded cover, no other attachment being required. It is also within the scope of the invention to omit projections. 10 on the end pieces and to rely solely on the cover 11 for securing the whole structure to the edge of the card body.

The foregoing construction provides not only a durable, moisture-proof and handsome tab structure, but onewhich can be very economically made from sheet celluloid or other sheet material with little loss of the material on account of irregularity of contour of the parts.

V I claim:

1. An index card comprising a body, and a composite tab attached. to the edge of the body comprising a middle piece having a cavity for the reception of an index slip, end pieces, and a cover of transparent sheet material folded over said middle and end pieces -with its margin secured to the card body,

said cover being provided with alined apertures to facilitate the insertion into and removal of index slips from said cavity.
