To all whomit may concern: I Q I Be it known that I, OSCAR WOODWARD, citizen of the United States, and resident of Babylon, in the county of Suffolk and State of- New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Typewriting- Machines, of which the following is a specification. I p
'Myinvention relates to tabulator mechanisms for typewriting and like machines. 7 The main objects of my invention, generally stated, are to provide comparatively simple means by which the tabulator mechanism may be easily assembled and-adjusted, and by which parts thereof, together with their actuating links, may be readily detached'and removed as a unit when desired.
Heretofore in tabulator mechanisms it has been common to provide fiat spring clips for detachably retaining connecting links in pivotal connection" with associated parts, and to detach one end of each of said links, allowing the links to remain in the machine while parts of the tabulator previously connected thereto were detached from the machine. In connecting and disconnecting such links it has been customary to employ a screw driver, or some such tool, to bend each retaining spring clip to one side and hold it in such position during the connection or disconnection of the associated link with its companion part. This required considerable time both in assemblingand disassembling, as well as in adjusting the parts and'the exercise of great care was necessary. to avoid V damaging the spring clips, which inbeing flexed to releasing positions were often broken, .or so bent as to remain permanently set and hence rendered useless or ineffective. Moreover, the connecting links dangled from the machine when the tabulator framewas removed, and in handling the machine'such links often became accidentally] bent or broken. and replacement was necessary, thus resulting in the loss of parts and in further loss ofjtime.
The objects of my invention, generally stated, are to provide a construction which overcomes these difficulties and objections,
avoids entirelythe use of retaining spring clips and enables the connecting links to be removed as a unit with the tabulator frame, sothat subsequent handling of themachine cannot result in damaging; the connecting links, and also enables an individual detachment and reconnection of each link to beeffected while the parts remain in the machine.
To the above and other ends which will hereinafter appear my invention consists in the features of construction, arrangements of parts and combinations of devices, setforth in the following description and particularly pointed out in the appendedclaims. Inthe drawing, I 1

My invention may be regardedas animprovement on the construction disclosed in my Patent'No.,927,626, dated July 13, 1909,
and'on the constructions disclosed in the patents to George A. Seib, Nos. 1,132,286 and 1,273,545, dated respectively March 16,1915, and July 23, 1918. As shown herein my invention is embodiedjina column selecting tabulator of the same general character as disclosed in'said patents-to George A. Seib.
The frame of the machine" comprises a base 1, corner posts 2 and a top plate The tabulator frame isdesignated as a whole by the reference numeral 4. This frame is detachably secured to the frame of the. ma- I chine by any suitable means, such as by r screws 5 which connect the lower end of the frame 4 to the base of the machine, and by screws 6 which connect the upper portion of said frame 4 to the top plate. A series of tabulator stop actuating members or levers 7 are pivoted to the tabulator frame at 8, and are mounted and guided, and control the tabulator stops (not'shown) in the usual or any desired manner. In the present instance it may be assumed thatthe tabulator stops are like those disclosed in the above mentioned 'Seib Patent 1,132,286: and are controlled by the levers 7 in a like manner.
A coiled expansionspring9 is seated at one end against a shoulder 10 in the tabulator frame "and bears at its opposite end against a shoulder 11 formed on the associated lever is connectedin any suitable manner, pref-' erably' by being pivoted permanently at 13' to a connecting link, designated 'a'sa' whole by the reference numeral 14. I prefer to make this a two-part extensible link comprising a rod 15 and a socket 16.. .Bart 15. is threaded at one end at 15, to enter a threaded hole in the socket 16, which-socket ispivotedjatjl3 to its associatedlever or member 7 The forward endportion of each link is flattened at 17 and formedwi-th a slot 18 which extends longitudinally of the link and is o enatthe forward end thereof, thus formlnga forked end. The slotted portion of each link is received in an openended slot 19in an associated key controlled member 20. It will be seen that the plane of each part 17 is at right angles to the plane of its associated key controlled member 20,
and that each link andiits associated member are slotted at right angles to each "other, so that each of the companion parts maybe received in the slot of the other part and form an inter-locking connection. This con- ;nection prevents a lateral movement of either part relatively to the other and forms a support for the forward end of the link on its member 120. However; this interlocking connection may be broken or the parts Cdetached one fromthe other by a mere rearward independent movement of the link;

I The members 20, as shown in the present instance, are pivoted on a rod"21 secured at its ends to the base of the machine, and each member 20 is in the nature of an angular lever-controlled by a tabulator key 22 in the usual manner. It will be understood that when connection is once effected between the forward-end of each link or rod 15 and itsassociated member '20, such connection ismaintained by the forward pressure on the link exerted .by the companion'spring 9, through the associatedstop actuating member 7. Should it be desired, for any reason, to effect a dis- 7 connection between a given link and its com- .panion member 20, this may be done by simply moving the lower end of the associated glever 7*rearwardly, as. indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1. This results in moving the link connected with said lever 7 lengthwise and rearwardlyin: the. directionof its operating movement and independently of the companion member 20,;and a disconnection of the. forwa rdend of the linkis thus auto matically effected. It will be observed that the slot 18 the link is shorter than the slot 19 in the lever 20 so-tha-t the flattened portion 17 of the link may rest on the bottom of the slot 19 or upon the hook-like part 23of the lever 20,'while the side Walls of the slot 18 embrace the necklike portion 21 resulting from the formation and 6) bya rearward movement of said 7 frame which carries with it all of the links 1121s a unit, and without any preliminary releasing of' the forward ends of the links from the members-20. In this movement of the frame the forward ends of the-links slide out of the slots 19. V An adjustment in the length of each :link 11 is effected, whenits forward end is .detached, by turning the part 15 to screw its: threaded end in or out within the socket part 16. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a detachable tabulator. frame, a series of tabulator stop actuating-members carried'by and detachable with said tabulator frame, a series of extensible links each pivoted to and supported at one end by one of said actuating-members and removable therewith when the tabulator frame is removed, a returning spring operative on each of said actuating members to return the same and the parts connected therewith to normal position, and a series of key-controlled members carried by the frame of the machine and to each of which one of said links is connected by a detachable connection that supports the other end of the link and permits a withdrawal of the links with the tabulator frame without efiectinga preliminary detachment of the links, the power of the returning springs being exerted to maintain the detachable ends of the links connected to said key controlled members.
4. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a member, a returning spring acting on said member to return it and the parts connected therewith to normal position, a second member for operating said first mentioned member, an intermediate connecting element between and supported at its ends by said members, and means for detachably connecting said element to one of said mem bers, said detachable connecting means being formed by slotting at right angles to each other the adjacent portions of the two parts to be connected so that each part may be received inthe slot ofthe other part and thus form an interlocking detachable connection that'may be broken by a mere independent movement of one of the parts against thepower of said returning spring.
