Description

s. T. THOMPSON.
BOOK HOLDER. APPLICATION FILED JUNE 10, I921.
Patented Sept. 13, 1921.
(1 I SIT ham 06011 UNITED STATES STEWART El. THOIIISON, OF LYNN, MASSACHUSETTS.
BOOK-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 13, 1921.
Application filed June 10, 1921. Serial No. 476,507.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, STEWART T. THOMP- soN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lynn, in the county of Essex and State 0 Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Book-Holder; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to book supports or holders and is designed more particularly to provide an article of this nature for receiving a stenographers note book and holding the same in convenient position while transcribing the notes.
The article embodies a base and a rack foldable thereon and adjustable to any desired angle, securing means being provided and cooperating with the rack to hold the same in the adjusted position, said means being automatic in action in the opening of the rack.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent and suggest themselves as the nature of the invention is understood.
While the drawings illustrate an embodiment of the invention it is to be understood that in adapting the same to meet different conditions and requirements, various changes in the form, proportion and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the nature of the invention.
Referring to the accompanying drawing forming a part of the specification,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a book holder embodying the invention,
Fig. 2 is a side view thereof, the dotted linels showing the rack folded upon the base, an
Fig. 3 is a detail view showing more clearly the clips for retaining the note book upon the rack.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and designated in the several views of the drawing by like reference characters.
The device comprises a base and a rack, the latter being hinged or pivoted to the base so as to fold thereon as indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 2. While the base 1 may be of any desired construction it is shown as an oak frame 1 having an upstanding ledge or flange 2 at one edge to engage the lower portion of the book and retain the same upon the holder. The rack 3 may likewise be of any construction and as illustrated consists of an 0 en frame hinged or pivoted at one edge to t e base 1, a short distance from the ledge or flange 2. The rack 3 embodies an intermediate cross bar 4 which cooperates with a spring clip 5 to retain the note book or like article in position upon the holder. The clip 5 is preferably attached at one end to a side bar of the rack 3 and overhangs the cross bar 4 so as to cooperate therewith in a manner readily appreciated.
A brace 6 is pivoted at its lower edge to base 1 and has a longitudinal slot 7 and notches 8 at one side of the slot and in communication therewith. A bracket 9 is secured to the base 1 and the brace 6 is pivoted thereto as indicated at 10. A spring 11 secured at one end to the bracket 9 curves throughout its length and its opposite or free end is adapted to engage the forward edge of the brace 6 and exert the rearward pressure thereon whereby the brace is automatic in action when elevating the rack 3 to secure the same at the different stages in its adjustment. A screw 12 or like element let into an edge of the rack 3 passes through the slot 7 of the brace 6 and cooperates with the notches 8 to secure the rack 3 when elevated. The notches 8 are relatively upwardly inclined to admit of the element 12 sliding out of engagement therewith when elevating the rack 3 but which will engage the element 12 and retain the rack 3 in the adjusted position. When it is required to fold the rack 3 the upper end of the brace 6 is drawn forward whereby the notches 8 clear the element 12 in the lowering of the rack 3 which may be folded to rest upon the base 1 as indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 2.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is 1. A book holder comprising a base, a rack having pivotal connection therewith, a brace pivoted to the base and having a longitudinal slot and notches along one s1de of the slot and in communication therewith, an element projecting from the rack and passing through the slot of the brace and cooperating with the notches thereof to hold the rack in a j s ed p si n an a P I g adapted to exert a pressure upon the brace 7 to cause the notches thereof to automatically bracket attached to the base, vto the bracket and having a longitudinal slot engage the element projecting from the rack.
2. A book holder comprising a base, a rack having pivotal connection therewith, a a brace pivoted and notches along one edge of the slot, an element projecting fromthe rack and pass ing through the slot of the brace and adapted to cooperate with the notches to hold the rack in adjusted position, and a spring attached to the bracket and adapted to exert a pressure on the brace to cause the notches thereof to automatically engage the element
