Description

A. BAKER.
BODKIN.
APPLICATION FILED FEB. 26. 1921.

z 2 1 I H INVENTOR flea-(g 311 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ANNA BAKER, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND, ASSIGNOE OF ONE-HALF T0 EDVA BAKER, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
BODKIN.
Application filed February 26, 1921.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANNA BAKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, in the count of Baltimore City, and State of Marylan have invented new and useful Improvements in Bodkins, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my present invention is the provision of a bodkin constructed in a simple, inexpensive and durable manner and with a view to being readily threaded, and one that is adapted to be used to advantage in carrying a cord, ribbon or the like through the hems or eyelets or other openings in wearing apparel, particularly the wearing apparel of Women.
To the attainment of the foregoing, the invention consists in the improvement as hereinafter described and definitely claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part thereof Figure 1 is a side elevation showing my novel bodkin as 0 en and ready to be expeditiously and easily threaded.
Fig. 2 is an elevation of the opposite side of the bodkin as it appears when closed subsequently to the threading operation.
Figs. 3 and 4 are views of the edges of the bodkin.
Fig. 5 is an enlarged transverse section taken in the plane indicated by the line 5--5 of Fig. 2.
Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all of the views of the drawings.
Inthe present and preferred embodiment of my invention the bodkin is formed in one piece of metal appropriate to its purpose, and among other elements it comprises a substantially straight body bar 1. At one end the said bar l is merged into the light of a loop 2, and the outer arm 3 of the said loop is provided with a tapered or omted free end 4. It will also be observed t at the said tapered or ointed end portion 4 is slightly deflected m a direction away from the body bar 1. At its opposite end the body bar 1 is merged into the bight of a permanently closed loop 5. The outer arm 6 of the said loop 5 is inclined inwardly, and at a point adjacentto the transverse center of the body bar 1 is merged into a transverse loop 7 th t straddles a d e eives the body bar Specification of Letters Patent.

engagement with the keeper 9 when as will be readily observed the said end 4 will be held against casual release and the point will be guarded and prevented from the interfering with the assage of the bodkin through material. 1 will be noted in this connection that it is entirely within the urview of my invention to impale the ribn, cord or the like on the arm 3 so that the threading of the bodkin will involve positive connection of the ribbon or cord to the bodkin with the result that accidental release of the ribbon or cord while the bodkin is in use will be precluded. In addition to the practical advantages hereinbefore ascribed to my novel bodkin, it will be manifest that the bodkin is susceptible of being inexpensively and easily produced without the employment of complicated machinery, and that the bodkin embodies no delicate parts such as are likely to get out of order after a short period of use.
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is
As a new article of manufacture, a bodkin, formed in one piece of metal and consisting essentially of a straight body bar, a loop at one end of the body bar and having an outer arm the free end of which is pointed and is deflected slightly away from the body bar, a loop at the opposite end of the bar and having an outer arm inclined inwardly and provided at its inner end with a transverse loop straddling the body bar adjacent to the transverse center thereof, and a keeper for the pointed end of the firstnamed arm, carried by the transverse loop and spaced from the adjacent edge of the body bar.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
ANNA BAKER.
