HOSE CLAMP. APPLICATION FILED JAN- 21. 1921.

I I I ll "H mm INVENTOR.
Clarence h az'nes BY (A W A T TORNE Y.
CLA-REENCE S. HAINES, OF INDIANAPOLIS, IN DIANA.
HOSE-CLAMP.
Specification of Le t r l en il iatented Sept. 13, 192] Application filed. January 27, 1921. Serial N5. 440,426.
To all whom '1' t may concern:
Be it known that I, CLARENCE S. Harries, a citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hose-Clamps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to hose clamps and the prime feature of the invention is the provision of a hose clamp and locking means therefor, which are made in one piece, the body of the clamp having a tongue portion struck therefrom adjacent one of its ends which is adapted to enter and interlock with a slot formed adjacent the opposite end of the clamp, the free ends of the clamp having parts bent to form finger pieces for receiving pressure from the thumb and finger, so that the clamp can be readily and quickly attached to or detached from the hose.
Other objects and advantages will be hereinafter more fully set forth and pointed out in the accompanying specification,
In the accompanying drawings which are made a part of this ap lication,
Figure 1 is an edge e evation of the clamp ready for operation,
Fig. 2, is a side elevation of the clamp,
Fig. 3, is a plan view of the clamp before it is bent into operative position, and
Fig. 4, a top plan View of the clamp.
Referring to the drawings, 1 indicates the body of the clamp which is preferably constructed of a flat, elongated strip of metal and from this strip is struck a tongue 2 which is employed for locking the clamp in position around a hose, the side edges of the tongue being formed with pairs of notches 3 which are adapted to interlock with the restricted portion 4: of a slot 5, said slot being formed through the opposite end of the body portion from the tongue 2. After the body 1 has been bent in circular formation, as best shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, the free ends thereof are bent at an angle to the remainder of the clamp so that said projecting ends form grips 6 which may be grasped by a finger and thumb for contracting the body portion 1 and firmly clamping the same around a hose, or other object, and by introducing the tongue3 through the large portion of the slot 5 and then interlocking a pair of the notches3 with the restricted portion 4 of the slot, the clamp will be securely held in locked position on the hose.
In applying the device to use, the clamp is introduced around the hose and the free end of the ton ue 2 entered through the enlarged portion of the slot 5 and pressure then applied to the members 6 to draw the clamp firmly into engagement with the hose. The free end of the tongue 2 is then elevated until a pair of notches enter the restricted portion 4. when, by releasing themembers 6, the expansion of the hose and clampwill securely lock the tongue with the walls of the slot, consequently holding the clamp in posi' tion until such time as inward pressure is again directed against the members 6 for releasing the tongue. By again lowering the tongue into the enlarged portion of the slot 5 to the clamp may be released from the hose. As considerable pressure is applied to the grips 6 in placing the clamp around an object, said grips may be reinforced by bending in the side edges of the grips and forming reinforcing ribs 7. Q 7
Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent. is:
1. A one piece hose clamp comprising a body having a tongue struck from the body at a distance from one end thereof and having its free end bent to extend across the hose when the clamp is applied to use, the edges of said tongue being provided with a plurality of pairs of notches, said body also having a slot with a restricted end for engagement with the pairs of notches for .lock ing the clamp in operative position.
2. A one piece hose clamp comprising an elongated body portion adapted to be bent around a hose, a locking means integral with the body for securing the ends of the clamp together, gripping members formed at the ends of the body portion. and reinforcing ribs for said gripping members.
3. A one piece hose clamp comprising an elongated body portion, a tongue struck from the body portion adjacent one end thereof and bent laterally to extend across the hose when the clamp is applied to use and having one of its ends integral with the body, the side edges of said tongue having a plurality of cooperating notches, said body portion having an elongated slot adjacent the opposite end thereof the outer end of which is restricted and adapted to interlock with the notches of the tongue, and gripping members formed at the ends of the body portion.
4. A hose clamp comprising a flat, elongated body portion adapted to be bent in body having a slot for the reception of the circular formation, a tongue integral at one In Witness whereof, I have hereunto set 10 end with the body portion adjacent one end my hand and seal at Indianapolis, Indiana,
