Be it known that I, MARK T. STANTON, a citizen of the'United States, and a resident of Cleveland Heights, county of Cuyahoga, and State of Ohio, have invented a newand useful Improvement in Rail-Bond Protectors, of which the following is a specification, the principle of the invention being herein explained and the best mode in which I have contemplated applying that principle, so as to distinguish it fromother inventions. a
The present invention, relating as indicated to rail bond protectors, is particularly adapted to bonds attached to the heads of rails, and having the body of the bond extending alongside of'the usual fish plate which is used to connect the two' rails together. -The present device is intended to constitute a secure and'extremly simple pro tecting covering for such a'bond, whichwill permit inspection of the bond terminals, at
any time, but which will prevent the mutila tion or'removal of the bond from therails.

In Fig. 1 there is shown a rail bond 1 of 'U-shape, having its terminals 1 integrally united to the adjacent ends of rails 2, the bonds being applied to the side of the head of the rail, and the U-shaped body portion of the bond extending along-side of a fishplate 3 attached to the two rails. It will be understood that the particular bond shown in the drawings is merely illustrative of a number of types which may be used, and my improved device will require butlittle modification to conform to these dilferent shapes.

lVhen so fastened to the fishplate it is impossible for anyone to get at the body of the bond to sever thesame'from the terminals or to mutilate the same in any way, while the removal of the plate 4 is an extremely difficult matter if the latter is integrally joined to the fishplate, which can be readily accomplished by welding.
In Figs. 3 and 4 a modified type of protecting plate is shown, in which the body portion of the plate is provided with upwardly extending arms 10 formed to substantially cover the bond terminals 1 and provided at either end witha downwardly bent lug 11 adapted to contact and to be welded to the upper edge of the fishplate. This modified typeof plate is provided as in the first form with a central-forwardly extending tongue bottom of the cover proper. The chief differences between the two forms of protecting plates shown in Figs. 1 and 3 is in the covering ofthe bond terminals by the plate of the latter figure, and while this is not alwaysnecessary, it is desirable in connection with certain types of bonds, and undercertain circumstances my improved protector forms, in connection with the fishplate, substantially an inclos- 12, which is welded to the fishplate, as is the same that even though the bond were not attached to the rail it could not be withing casing for the bond, which so covers the drawn, while to secure access to the bond to remove it is impossible unless the plate is first removed.
Qther modes of applying the principle of my invention maybe employed instead of the one explained, change being made as regards the mechanism herein disclosed, provided the means stated by any of the following claims or the equivalent of such stated means be employed.
1 therefore particularly point out and distinctly claim as my invention 1. The combination with two abutting rail ends, a fishplate connecting thesame and a bond having its terminals attached to the heads of said rails, and its body portion extending downwardly therefrom in U- shape adjacent to said fishplate, of a protecting plate disposed adjacent to such U- shaped bond body, and extensions on said plate disposed above and below such bond body and integrally connected to said fishlate.
3. The combination with two abutting rail ends, a fishplate connecting the same and a bond having its terminals attached to the heads of said rails, and its body portion extending downwardly therefrom in U-shape adjacent to said fishplate, of a roughly U- shaped protector plate formed tocover the body portion of said bond when disposed adjacent thereto and provided with extensions integrally joined to said fishplate above and below and on either side of the body portion of said bond. 5
4. The combination with two abutting rail ends, a fishplate connecting the same and a bond having its terminals attached to the heads of said rails, and its body portion extending downwardly therefrom in U- shape adjacent to said fishplate, of a roughly U-shaped protector plate formed to cover the entire exposed side of said bond when disposed adjacent thereto, said plate being formed with extensions partially inclosing the terminal portions of said bond and be- 7 ing integrally joined to said fishplate above and below the body portion of said bond'and also at either side thereof.
5. In a combination with two abuttingrail ends a fishplate connecting the same, and a bond having its terminals attached to said rails, of means positioned to substantially inclose the portion of said bond between its terminals, said means being homo-' geneously united to said fishplates both above and below the body portion of said bond.
