, Patented. Sept. 13, 1921.
Application filed July 16, 1919. L Serial No. 311,330.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JAMES S. Pnnnow, a
citizen of the United States, residing-at novel means for controlling the draft door,
to improve the construetlon ofthe casing,
and, particularly, to provide a novel crown 1n the casing; and, generally, to improve and to enhance the utility of devices of that type to which theinvention appertains.
With the above and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination' and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and elaimed,'.it being understoodthat, with in the scope of what is claimed, changes in the precise embodiment of the invention shown can be made' without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings v Figure 1 shows in perspective, a device constructed in accordance with the invention, the casing having been removed; Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the complete furnace looking toward the front; Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing-one of the crown sections; Fig." 1' is a longitudinal section of the complete furnace; Fig. 5 is a perspective showing one of the grates; Fig. 6 is a sectional detail showing one of the anchoring bolts for the front plate of the furnace; and Fig. 7 is a fragmental vertical section similar to Fig. 4 but illustrating a modification.
In carrying out the invention, there is provided a front plate 1 having a curved top 2. The numeral 3 marks the stoke door carried on the front plate 1 by hinges 1 and adapted to swing open, horizontally. The door 3 is supplied with a latch 5 adapted to The front plate 1 cooperate with a keeper'6 on the front plate 1, the dooroarr-ying a handle'f.
Located below the stoke door 3 is a combined draft and ash door 8, mounted to swing verticallyon hinges 9 assembled with thefront plate 1. The numeral 10 denotes a curved prop provided with teeth 11v on its lower edge. The prop 10 extends outwardly through an opening 12 in the door '8. The
The grip 16 serves as a means for manipu- Ij latin the prop 10, and I serves; also, as a handle wherebythe door 8 may be swung vertically on its hinges 9. W hen the door 8" has been opened to any desired extent,
either for the purpose of creating andraft, .1
or for the removal of ashes, the'teeth ll on the prop 10 may be engaged with the front plate. 1 at the lower edge of the opening 17 for which the door 8 constitutes a closure.
The: numeral 19 denotes a; rectangular frame-provided at its endswith inwardly projecting flanges '20. Theside portions of is provided with openthe tram-e19 are connected at'an intermedi- 5:?
ate point by a cross bar 21 including a'horizontal body 22 and-an upstanding flange.23. The rear end of the frame 19 is supplied with an outwardly projectinglip 25. Securing elements 24, which may be bolts, unite 4;
the'forward end of the frame 19 withthe front plate 1. The frame 19 may be supported at its rear end and at its sides,'0n posts 26, formed independently of the frame.
The posts 26 may be omitted if desired. "The numeral 27 designates a thimble carried by a plate 28 having a rim 29, the'rimbeing connectedby securing devices 30 to thelip 25 of the frame 19. The thimble27 enters versely of the furnace:
cannot slide rearward. 'SGCtlOIlOf the crown rests on thecurved top 2 The invention comprises a casing, includ ing sides 35 and a rear end wall 36, the sides and the rear end wall preferably being made of bricks. The upper edge of the rear end wall 36 is curved to correspond to the curved top 2 of the front plate 1. The li 25 on the frame 19 is supported in the rear end wall 36, and, thus, the frame 19 is upheld at its rear end, the forward end of the frame being connected, as aforesaid, by means of the securing elements 24, to the front plate 1. The rim 29 of the plate 28 which carries the thimble 27 is embedded in the brick work of the rear end wall 36. The posts 26 rest against the sides 35 and against the end wall 36 of the brick work portion of the casing.
The casing portion of the furnace includes a crown, made up of aplurality of arched sections 37 disposed end to end, each section being provided at one end with an offset flange 38' receiving the end of an adjoining section. The flange of the rearmost section of the curved top overlaps rear end wall 36, as shown at 39, the end of said section abuttingagainst the rear end wall as shown at 40 so that the crown, considered as an entity, The foremost arched port the arched sections 37 of the crown, but, also, serve as protectors or guards for the upper edges of the brick work sides 35. The
side members 42'cooperate with the sections 37 to define shoulders 43, which, coacting with theinner. surfacesof the sides 35, prevent. the sections 37 from moving trans- In the openings 18, of the front plate 1, tie'bolts 44 are located, the heads 45 of the tie bolts engaging the'front plate 1, the tie bolts extending rearwardly into the brick work which forms the sides 35. Washers 46 are mounted on the tie bolts 44 and bear against the brick work, nuts 47 being threaded on the ends ofthe-bolts to cooperate with the washers 46. The tie bolts 44 .are embedded in the brick wor'kof the sides-35as the sides .arebeing builtQup and form a secure anchor- V ,a geforholding the front plate 1' in place.
In Fig. 7 of the drawings, parts hereinbefore described-havebeen designated by numerals previously used, with the suffix a. In Fig. 7, the thimble 27 is a simple tube, the plate 28 and the rim 29 of Fig 1 being omitted, the thimble being merely embedded in the brick work of the rearend wall 36 Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is 1. A furnace comprising a front wall; a casing including a rear end wall and side walls; a rectangular frame including end members, one end member having an outstanding lip mounted in the rear end wall, the end members being provided with inwardly extended flanges, the side portions of the frame being connected by a cross bar in cluding avhorizontal body and an upstanding flange; grate sections within the frame, the outer ends thereof being supported on the flanges of the end members, the inner ends thereof being supported by the body-of-the cross bar and being separated by the flange of the cross bar; means for securing the other end member of the frame to the front wall; and a crown comprising arched sections extended between thevfront wall and the rear end wall, the intermediate crown sections having transverse flanges recelvmg the ad acent end of an ad o1n1ng section, the
.crown sections being provided with laterally walls; a crown extended betweenthe front wall and the rear end walland supported on the side walls; a grate-carrying frame seicured .at its forward end to the front wall and provided at itsrear end with an out- 7 standing lip mounted in the rear end wall; a
plate provided with a thimble, and'including a circumferential rim, the rim being mounted in the rear end wall and being supported on the lip; and means for securing the rim to the lip.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, ;I have hereto a-flixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
