Description
J. C. CARLSON. DEVICE FOR IN DICATING THE LENGTH AND HANG 0F COAT SLEEVES.
APPLICATION FILED SEPT. 18, 1920.
PatentedSept. '13, 1921.
John; 6'; Caz/65074,
DEVICE FOR INnIoA'rINe THE'LENGTI-I ANDIIANG or ooar srnnvns.
To all whom it may concern 7 Be it known that I, JOHN C., CARLsoN., a citizen of the United States, residing at Chi cago, in the county: of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain vnew and useful Improvements in Devices for Indicating the'Lengthfand Hang of Coat-Sleeves, of which the following is 'a specification.
Heretoforeicoat makers .in preparing a coat for a try on .bastein thesleeves,
and when the coat-is tried on, if the sleeves.
do not hang "properly-or. are not of the proper length, the-sleeveis marked and then ripped out, the shoulder of the'coat isthen opened and changed by sometimes taking up w or letting out an inch or more of the material, with the resultthat thehsleeve length and the hang of the' sleeve will be lost. In making the sleeve, the insideisleeveseam in soft goods will sometimes stretch: fully half an inchiresulting in considerable difii.
culty and inconvenience and the lossv of the entire calculation as to-the sleeve. 7 1
To overcome these diflicultiesandobjeccated,.thereby obviating the necessity .of.
making the sleeve fora try on and alteration; and at the same time insuring accuracy in the length and hangof the sleeve is one of the objectsof the present invention.
A further object is to provide any improved'device of this character which will'be of a simple and cheap construction and by means of the use of whicjhthe proper length and hang of thesleeve maybe marked or indicated upon thebody of the coat, so that the sleeves may be, formed of the proper length and properly positioned in the. coat,
therebyobviating the necessity of trying the I coat and sleeve on for that purpose.
To the attainment of these ends and the accomplishmentof other new and useful obment of .the several parts hereinafter more fully describedand claimed'and shown-in 5 the accompanying drawing illustrating this inventlon and 1n which-"- Figure 1 is a v1ew showlng the manner of using this nvent on. I
I Specification of Letters Patent. Pafi l s pt 1921:- Application filed Septe mber18,'-1920. Serial No; 411,213; r i

of a coat showing the. sleeve indication:
.marked thereon.
Fig. 4 is a detail sectional viewtaken on line 4-4: Fig, 2. I I Asshown in the drawing the numeral '10 'vde'signates a sleeve section constructed in,
the ordinary and. well-known manner which sleeves areconstructed and thisisleev'e' section 10 may be of any desiredlength, but
is preferably somewhat-shorter than the sleeve tobe applied tothe coat i i I I V Arranged at the top of the sleeve section '10 is a draw string 11- preferably elasticand which will contract the upper. end. and cause. the same to be bound upon the: arm of the person, but may be released soasto permit the sleeve section to be freely adjusted lengthwise of: the arm, but: willmaintain the sleeve section in its adjusted-position.
This sleeve section 10 is preferably; fin
ished asthe lower partofan ordinary sleeve;
so that when placed uponthe arm of the person I it. will have the-"appearance of. a. por-.
tion of-a coat sleeve. v a
. Secured adj acent the lower edge.12,of the sleeve is agage 13, which may be of any desired size and configuration, but; is preferably provided with a horizontal straight edge 14 and a vertical straight edge'15. This gage 13 is securedvtothe sleeve sectionin any I Jsuitablemanner preferably, by sewing the body portion 16f thereof within: thesleeve section so thatrthe straightgedge 14 of the gage will stand; in close proximity to the lower frontcorner 17 of the sleeve section.
Pivotally, connected withlthe gage 13 is a .scale or rule 18 having indications or graduations 19 thereon. This scale 18 ispivotally connected as at 20 with the gage 13 so that when; the sleeve section 1.0 is placedupon the arm-the scale 18 will dependtherebelow and will have a free swinging movement -with respect thereto, so as to permit the scale to assume a proper positlonwith respect to the hand ofithe person when the sleeve sectioirisin position." I
Slidably mounted, upon the scale 18 is an element 21 which is adapted to be secured in its adjusted position vin any suitable mannersuch as by meansofa clampingscrew 05, o "'22, and the-free end ofwthe scale 18 prefer- 7 and one is adjusted lengthwise of the arm until the lower edge 12 of the sleeve section assumes the desired position with respect to the hand of the wearer. 'This adjustment will be permitted by reason of the vieldable element 11 at the top of the sleeve.
WVhen the sleeve section is positioned, the
after the coat is taken off, the lower front corner of'the coat sleeve corresponding to the lower front corner 17 of the sleeve section 10 will be properly positioned with respect to the indication 25 on the coat 24. This is accomplished "by reason of the fact that the lower edge of the sleeve will stand adjacent the indication made along the strc ight edge 14 while the front edge of the sleeve will coincide with the indication or line made along the straight edge 15.
After the indications have been thus made on the coat and before the sleeve section 10 is removed from the arm, the element 21 is adjusted along. the scale 18 until the element contacts with the tip of the thumb of the wearer, and this will give the measurement from the bottom of the sleeve to the end of the thumb. 'This measurement on the scale 18.is now measured on the scale carried by the other sleeve section, that is section 10 on the other arm be too low or too high to cause the element 21' on the respective element 18 to contact with the thumb of the other hand after having been set, then the sleeve section 10 is adjusted lengthwise of the arm until the element 21 does contact with the thumb. This will give the proper length of the other coat sleeve. After this operation the same indications are made on the other side of the coat to indicate the length and hang of the other sleeve.
After these indications have been obtained, and when the sleeve is to be sewed into the coat, all that is necessary is to measure from the sleeve length marked on the coat and thusobtained to one inch below the arm-hole notch 26, and this'will in dicate the correct length ofthe sleeve.
While the preferred form of the invention has herein been shown and described it is to be understood that various changes may be made in the details of construction and s in the combination and arrangement of the several parts within the scope of the claims without departing from invention. 7
