Be it knownA that I, HANS B. KRAUT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metal-Section Outters; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, lwhich form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in machines for shearing or cutting rolled metal shapes or sections, and refers more particularly to a novel attachment for supporting the movable and fixed blades of the section cutter, and also to means for supporting the work for miter cutting. 1
Among the objects of the invention is to provide a novel attachment for supporting the cutting` blades on the operating slide and a liXed portion of the frame, respectively, so constructed as to permit quick detachment and replacement of the blades. In machines of this character blades are designed for cutting different structural shapes, as, for instance, angle bars, I-beams, T-beams, and other shapes or sections, and in a machine adaptable to a shop where various sections are required'to be cut, it is important that means be provided for quickly changing the blades to adapt the machine to different cutting operations.
Another object of the invention is to provide novel hold down means for fiXedly-holding the sections in the machine relatively to the'planes of thecutting blades so as to accurately cut the sections at desired mitering angles.
Other objects of the invention are to improve and simplify section cutting machines for the purpose described, and the invention consists in the combination and arrangement of the parts shown in the drawings and described in the specification, and is pointed out in the appended claims.
The improvements hereinl shown are adapted to that type of combination machine 'shown in my companion application for United States Lettersl Patent filed on the L1th day of Warch, Serial Number 280,615, which machine embraces in a single structure combined punching, section cutting, shearing, bar cutting, and coping and notching mechanisms. Only such parts of the Specification of Letters Patent.

However, it will be understood that the present improvements may be adapted to a simple section cutting machine or to a machine embracing less than the entire combinations shown in said companion application.

F igs. 11 and 12 illustrate different blade designs for cutting different sections, adapted to be interchangeably used with the angle cutting blades shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 5.
As shown in said drawings, the frame of the machine comprises an intermediate recessed or ianged member 10 and side plates 11, 12 that are pinned together. The said intermediate member is recessed above a work clearance opening 13 through the frame members to provide a way for the slide 14 that carries the movable cutting blade. One wall of said guide or way is formed by the inner face of a removable cover plate 15, as in the construction shown vin my aforesaid companion application.
The said cover plate is fixed to the frame by bolts 16, and the removal of the cover plate 15 permits the slide to be removed laterally from the frame. The said slide is operated by a rotative shaft 17 mounted in bearings 19 in the frame plate and cover plate 11, 15, respectively.
The lower end of the slide 14 is formed at the frame opening 13 with a broad horizontal flange 20 which extends laterally from the opposite sides of the slide to support the holder 21 for the movableY cutter blade 22. The construction of said holder is shown best in Figs. 2, 5, and 6. It comprises a broad flanged portion 23 that fits flat against the flange 2O and is bolted thereto by bolts 24, the heads of which are fitted in T-slots 25 formed in the lower side of the`slide flange 20. The holder embraces additionally a downwardly extending blade holder comprising side members 26, 26, a top member 27 made integral therewith and withV the body 21 Aof the holder, and a bottom member 28, shown as fixed to the lower ends of the side members by screws 29. The said casting is formed to provide a backing 30 for the movable blade 22 that is supported thereagainst in a seat formed at the inner faces of the top, side, and bottom members of the holder (Fig. 6). Said backing 30 is cut away to provide a work clearanceopening 31 in line with they frame work clearance 13.
The said blade holder 21 extends downwa rdly within a saddle or assembling frame designated as a whole by 32 and shown best in Figs. 2 and 9. The said saddle comprises a base 33 that fits fiat on a horizontal supporting' flange 34 that is made integral with and extends laterally from the intermediate member 10 of the frame, and upstanding walls 35, giving to the saddle a general U- shape. The said flange 34 is provided with undercut grooves to receive the heads of vbolts 36 by which the assembling frame at One side thereof is fixed to said flange. At the other side of the frame the walls are provided at the sides of the undercut grooves with slotted lugs 37 to receive cap screws 38 that are threaded into the flange 34. Y The saddle is adapted to be adjusted laterally von and locked to the flange 34 by means of setV screws; 39 :that are threaded through depending flanges 40 at one side of the saddle and bear against the adjacent edge of the flange 34 and locking bolts 41 which are anchored in said flange 34 and extend outwardly through openings in the saddle frame flanges 40 and are provided with locking nuts.-
The inner sides ofthe walls 35 of said saddle are formed with parallel guide faces 42 which are engaged b y the members 26 of the movable bla-de holder 21, as shown in Figs. 3 and 9. The said holder 21 is backed in the saddle bv wedges or keys 45 (Figs. 2, 3, and v7) which are seated in recesses 46 formed Von the inner faces of said saddle walls 35, the wedges being formed with outer tapered bearing faces 48 that seat against opposing lateral shoulders 49 at the outer` sides ofthe recesses 46. The wedges 45 are' provided on their other sides with laterally directed flanges 50 having straight faces for engagement with the rear edges of the vertical members 26of the blade holder 21. Adjustment of said wedge 45 relatively to the walls 35 of the assemblinnjframe or saddle may be effected by cap screws 51 that extend through slots 52 inV said wedges and are threaded into the vertical VVsaddle walls. Thus, by raising or lowering the wedges 45 from the position shown in Fig. 2, the depending portion of the movable blade holder may -be adjusted toward or away from the tapered shoulder 49 of the assembling frame or saddle.
Y 55 designates a blade holder for the fixed blade 55a of the section cutter, said fixed blade fitting flat against the movable blade, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. Theblades here shown are designed for cutting angles'of various cross sections and dimensions and are formed with angularly disposed clearance openings having opposing cutting edges between which the angle sections are cut, asbest shown in Fig. 1. Said fixed blade holder comprises side members 56, a top member 57, and a bottom member 58 that surround a-clear'ance opening 59 which registers with the clearance opening 31 of the movable blade holder. The lateral faces of the side members 56 of the blade holder 55 engage parallel bearing faces 60 formed on the inner faces of the upstanding walls 35 of the saddle 32, as shown in Figs 3 land 9. The said fixed blade is longer than `the movable blade 22 and engages at its side edges said guide faces 60 of the saddle and is thereby held from horizontal displacement in its plane. The fixed blade 55a and its holder 55 are supported at the lower side of the holder onan upwardly facing pad 62 formed on the base or cross member 33 of the saddle (Figs. 2 and 9), and sa-id blade is held from rising in respect of thefholder 55 byv a lip 63 on the upper memberrr of said holder thatoverlies the upper edge of the Vfixed blade.
Thesaid holder 55 is pressed toward the blade 55a and said blade is thereby held fiat against the movable blade 22 by means of wedge shaped keys 65 that engage seats66 formed on the inner faces of the upstanding members of the assembling or saddle frame, the said keys having inwardly tapered faces 67 Vto engage tapered ribs 68 formed on the outer faces of the holders 55. (Figs. 2, 3, 8, and 10) and being formed with a longitudinally straight, transversely tapered face to engage a correspondingly seats 66. Said wedge keys are provided with lugs 70 by which they Vmay be forced intoY shaped shoulder 69 at the outer sides of the Y Y the holder 55.

The seat formed in the holder 21 is of dimensions to-fix the movable blade relatively to yits holder, while the fixed blade is laterally supported and held from downward movement by the members of the saddle and is held from rising by the'lip 63 of When the blade a is removed, however, the blade 22 may be readily removed laterally from its seat in the holder 21. The adjustments described provide means for holding and guiding the movable and fixed blades and, at the sametime, provide means for quickly removing or detaching both blades when a pair of blades are to be removed and another pair substituted therefor. To remove a pair of blades, the keys are forced upwardly out of their seats by tapping on the under sides of the lugs 70, and after removal of said keys the holder may be slightly shifted outwardly at its base and then tipped outward at its upper side and then withdrawn from the saddle to free thevblades 55a, 22 forready removal. The replacement of the blades and the holder 5o and its keys 65 will obviously be effected in an order the reverse of their detachment or removal. It will bel understood that the exterior dimensions of said bladeswill be equal to each other and will interfit with the associated parts of the holders in the same manner as herein described in respect of the blades 22 and 55a, the only distinction being in the shapes of the clearance openings to receive the work and also the cutting edges at the sides of said openings.
The construction described provides means for fixing the blades in the holder and for holding" or pressing said blades in shearing contact without the use of blade holding screws, as has heretofore been the common practice. VIn the prior practice the removal of the blades necessitated-the removal of numerous holding screws, whereby the detachment of the blades consumed considerable time.
The holder 21 for the movable blade is provided with an outwardly` inclined dropout apron '75 that extends laterally beyond the rear pertionof the supporting flange 34 for the section cutter attachment for the purpose of freely clearing the cut portions of the metal from the blades.

The holddown device shown comprises a horizontal bar 80, to the opposite ends of which the lower ends of ver- 'tical screw shafts 81 are swiveled. screw shafts are threaded in nuts 82 which Said are interposed between upper and lower guides 83, 84 that extend laterally from and are integral with the cover plate 15. Fixed to said nuts 82 are spiral gears 85 which mesh with an 'operating spiral gear 86 the sha-ft of which is rotatively mounted on a bearing carried by a bar 87 that is bolted to the upper guides 83. Rotation of' said operating wheel 86, as by the hand crank 88, serves to either raise or lower the hold-down bar to adjust it to work of varying dimen sions and to cut different miter angles.
Said hold-down bar is provided with one or more downwardly directed salients or fingers 90, to engage the angles of sections, as the angle bar shown in Figs. 1 and 2, to hold said sections in proper lateral adjustment for varying miter angles. In accordance with one feature of the invention the down-holding finger is adjustable lengthwise of the bar 80. This adjustment is herein shown as effected by providing the finger with a head 91 shaped Vto fit the cross section of the vbar 80, being fixed to said bar by a cap screw 92 that extends through a hori- Zontal slot in said head and is threaded into said bar. Said bar 80 is provided with a number of threaded openings 94 to receive said cap screw, three of such openings being shown, one located at the center of the bar, and the others near the ends thereof. T he slotted head permits the finger to be adjusted through asubstantial lateral range relatively to the screw in either position of the latter, and by shifting to the different threaded openings 94 the finger can be adjusted to any desired longitudinal position on the bar to hold the section in position for any angle desired within the full range of adjustment of the finger.
Figs. 11 and 12 illustrate other forms of cutter blades 80, 81 for cutting various cross sections which are adapted to be interchangeably used with the cutter blade shown in the main figures.
l claim as my invention:
1. In a section cutting machine, the combination with a fixed blade and a movable blade having side contact with each other throughout the throw of' the movable blade, of holder means to lock said blades in place, embracing seats in said holder means with which said bla-des interlock, pressure elements acting flatwise on the blades and wedge means acting between the pressure elements and holder means to press the blades together.
2. In a section cutting machine, the combination with a fixed blade and a movable blade, or" holder means for said blades einbracing fixed and movable holders formed with seats to receive the blades and to hold them from movement in their planes, and means acting against said holders in planes normal to the planes of blades for holding said blades in shearing engagement.
8. In a section cutting machine, the combination with a fixed blade and a movable blade, of' holder means for said blades embracing holders formed with'seats to receive the blades, a fixed saddle frame and wedge means between said saddle fra-me and the holders for pressing theblades inA shearing engagement.

A section cutting machine comprising a frame, a slide reciprocable therein, a holder for the movable blade fixed to and depending from the slide, a saddle fixed toI the frame into which said holder extends and provided with a seat for the movable blade, a holder Afor the fixed blade in said saddle frame, and wedge means cooperating with said saddle and with said blade holders for maintaining the movable and fixed blades in shearing contact.
5; A section cutting machine comprising a frame, a slide reciprocable therein, a holder for the movable section blade fixed to and depending from the slide, a saddle fixed to the frame into which said holder extends and provided with a seat for the movable blade, a holder in said saddle frame forV the fixed blade for holding the fixed bladeY from rising, and means coperating with said saddle and with the movable and fixed blade holders for pressing the interposed movable and fixed blades in shearing engagement.
6. A section cutting machine comprising` a frame, a slide reciprocable therein, a saddle fixed to said frame and comprising parallel side walls, a holder for the movable blade attached to the slide and extending between and having bearing with said walls and provided with a laterally open seat for the movable blade, and means carried by the saddle for forcing the fixed blade in shearing contact with the movable blade and to hold the fixed blade from moving in its plane,
7. A section cutting machine comprising a frame, a slide reciprocable therein, a saddle Y fixed to said frame and comprising parallel side walls, a holder for the movable blade attached to the slide and extending between and having bearing with said walls and provided with a laterally open seat for the movable blade, a holder within the saddle 'for the fixed blade, constructed to prevent said `fixed blade from rising, and keys coperating with said saddle for locking the fixed blade holder and acting on the holder to press the fixed blade in shearing contact with the movable blade.
8. In a section cutting machine, the combination with a frame, a slide reciprocable therein. a movable blade holder carried by said slide, a saddle fixed to said frame, a holder for the fixed blade, and wedge means between the latter holder and saddle to press the fixed blade toward the movable blade.
9. A section cutting machine comprising a frame, a slide reciprocable therein, a saddle fixed toy said frame and comprising parallel Vside walls, a holder for the movable blade attached to the slide and extending between and having bearing with said walls and provided with a laterally open seat for the movable blade, 'said saddle being formed also to provide a seat for the fixed blade, a holder within the saddle for the fixed blade, constructed to prevent the fixed blade from rising, means for pressing the fixed blade holder toward the movable blade holder, and adjustable means for backing the movable blade holder.

In a section cutting machine, the combination with a frame and a slide reciprocable therein, of asaddle mounted onV the frame, with means for `transversely adjust- Ving the saddle relatively to the plane of the i530 frame, said saddle comprising upright walls, a movable blade holder depending from and Xed to the slide and guided by said saddle walls and formed to provide a seat for the movable blade, and a removably mounted fixed blade holder in said saddle, with means acting on the latter saddle to press the fixed blade against the movable blade.
14. In a section cutting machine', the combination with the movable and fixed cutting blades, and their supports, of a hold-down device in front of the blades comprising depending ingers across the cutting edges of the blades, with means to adjust the fingers both vertically and horizontally relatively to the supports of the blades.
15. In a section cutting machine, the combination with the movable and lixed cutting blades, of a hold-down device in front of the blades comprising a vertically adjustable horizontal bar, a finger depending therefrom, and means whereby said finger may be adjusted lengthwise of the bar and fixed in adjusted position thereon.
16. In a section cutting machine, the combination with the movable and fixed cutting blades, of a hold-down device in front of the blades comprising a horizontal bar provided with intermediate and end threaded openings, a linger depending from the bar and provided with a slot, and a screw adapted to extend through said slot and to interchangeably engage either of said threaded openings of the bar.
17. In a section cutting machine, the combination with the movable and iiXed cutting blades, of a hold-down device in front of the blades comprising a horizontal bar, means to vertically adjust said bar, a finger depending therefrom, and means whereby said finger may be adjusted lengthwise of the bar and liXed in adjusted positions thereon.
