Massachusetts, have invented certain new.
and useful Improvements in Motion-Picture Reels, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to an improvement in reels and more particularly to reels for use in connection with-motion picture machines.
The principal objects of our invention are to provide a reel having spring means for holding one end of a film or the like, so that said film may be easily 'and quickly attached to or detached from said reel; to
- provide means for operating said film holdlng means so as to-eliminate the liability of the film holding means being distorted, as frequently occurs when operated by the operators finger; and to arrange the operating means so that it may be operated from one side' of the reel, thus eliminating the necessity of the operator cramping his hand between the two side plates to raise the film holding means.
Another object of our invention is to provide a reel that is simple in construction, durable and eflicient in use, and one that may be placed upon the market at'a low cost. I
Further objects of our invention will appear in the following detailed description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, f .rming a part-of this specification, and in which drawings l,Figure 1 lis a diagrammatic section through our improved reel.
Fig. 2 is a vertical section taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1, and
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of our improved reel.
In the drawings, wherein similar characters refer to similar parts throughout the views, A designates the side plates or flanges; B, the hub portion secured between Said side plates or fianges'A; C, a leaf spring for holding the end of the film to be ,wound upon the reel; and D, the means for raising the film holding spring to a non-film engaging position.

1n to reduce the weight thereof, and the central axial openings 6. At one side of and adjacent the opening 6 of one of the plates 5 is provided an-opening 7 which will be hereinafter more fully described.
The hub B has a central axial bore 8 therein that alines with the openings 6 of the Side plates A. Adjacent and parallel to the borev 8 is provided a way 9 having alreduced extension 10 at one end, and an enlarged opening 11 alining with the openino 7 of one of the 'side plates A, at the other end thereof. Radially extending from the way 9 to the outer surface ofthe hub struction, having the usual openings 5 there- B, is provided a way or opening 12. These ways and openings just described are adapted to receive the meansD for raising the material 'holding means C,- `which will be hereinafter set forth.
The means C for holding one end of the film or material to be wound upon the hub, consists of a leaf spring 13 conforming to the curvature of the hub B, and having one end thereof secured to said hubby screiivs 14,- but any other -securing means may be used if desired. It is to be noted that the the insertion of the material the leaf spring 13, said means consists way 10. Slidably mounted in the way 12 f ,is a pin 18 adaptedto ride up the inclined face 16 when the plunger 15 is slid in the way 9. Thus the pin 18 will engage and raise the leaf spring 13. On the reducedv extension neark the inclined face 16, is a disk-shaped stop plate 19, which is adapted to bear against the pin 18 when a coil spring 20 returns the plunger to its nonraising position. The coil spring 2O is mounted upon the reduced extension 17 and is adapted tobear against the inner end of the relatively large way 9 and the disk shaped stop plate 19.

Pressure being exerted upon the plunger 15 until the disk shaped stop plate 19 passes the Way l2allowing the pin 18 to beins erted in the way 12, in rear of the stop ldisk shaped plate 19, said pin will be engaged by the disk-shaped stop plate and prevent the spring 20 from forcing the plunger 15 out of the way 9. By exerting pressure upon the plunger 15, the 1nclined face 16 will engage the pin 18, which in turn engages the leaf spring 1,3 and raises the free end of the same ,from engagement with the hub. The opera-tor then inserts the end` of the material' between spring 13 and-hub B and as'he releases the pressure upon the plunger 15, the coil spring 20 returns the plunger until the disk shaped stop plate 19 engages the in 18.
