Referring to said drawings, A is the elevated track upon which the two carriages, B
and C, travel. Said track is usually a horizontal cable secured by its ends to fixed objects at suitable elevations.

In the carriage, C, the wheels, C the channel bars, C, the bolts, C the spacing tubes, C the diagonal bars, C and U, and the bolt, C correspond, respectively, to the parts, B to B inclusive, in the carriage, B.
Below and parallel to each channel bar, C, a channel bar, C extends from the adjacent bar, C to the adjacent bar, C, and has its ends suitably secured to said bars. At the front and at the rear an upright bar, C, has its lower end forked and suitably secured to the adjacent bars, 0' and C, and extends upward along the inner tace ot the adjacent bar, C A grooved roller,C is located between the bars, C opposite the bars, C A horizontal bolt, C penetrates the bars, C and C, and the roller, C and a spacing tube, C located within the wheel.

Said U-bolts firmly clamp the load-line into the groove, C lVhen the nuts on the U-bolts have been loosened, the 1oadline may be shifted endwise in the clamping block.

The operation is as follows:
Let it be assumed that the carriages are on the track, A, at any desired distance rightward of the drums and that the carriages are separated to bring the free end of the load line above the ground, and that said end of the line is to be lowered to receive a load either directly under the track or a short distance or several hundred feet sidewise from the track. v f
To lower the free end of the load-line into position to receive the load, the carriages are drawn toward each other by winding the cable, G, on the drum, G and allowing the cable, F, to'unwind from the drum, F the drum, H being held stationary. Thus the carriage, B, is moved toward the carriage,

When the load has been attached to the load-line, H, the carriages'are to be sepa rated until the load]ine, H, has been drawn eightward through the swivel-block far enou-ghto lift the load to the desired height. Then the two carriages are to beheld at the same distance from each other and moved simultaneously to the left along the track, A, until the point for discharge of the load has been reached. The separation and simultaneous movement of the carriages are effected by causing the drum, H to wind the load-line and at the same time allowing the drums, F and G to unwind, brakes being preferably applied to the drums, F and G in order that the cables, F and G, may remain under sufficient tensionto avoid slack in said cables.
hen the point for discharge has been reached, the load may be released While it is in its elevated position or the load may be lowered by holding the drum, H releasing the drum,- F and turning the drum, G whereby the winding of the cable, G, on the drum, G will draw the carriage, B, toward the carriage, C, until the load has been brought as low as is desired.
It is to be observedthat the shape of the carriages is such as to keep the swiveled block of the load carriage separated from the clamping device of the clamp carriage even when the carriages bear against each other. This is eliected by the horizontal members, 13*, of the load carriage and the horizontal members, C of the clamp carriage. Furthermore, at such time, the load butler, B flon the load carriage bears against the buffer, C of the clamp carriageand thetwo butters form a swivel or rocking point, whereby the load carriage is made free to swing sidewise, independently of the clamp carriage, when the free end of the load line is to be taken sidewise a short distance or several hundred 'feet to get aload. It must be observed that in such case it is desirable to have the load carriage turn from the upright to the same inclinedposition as the load linetakes to reach its load. And in this connection it must beremembered that the two carriages are to be brought together when the load line is to be let out to approximately its maximum length;
As is already well-known in this art, the drums are to be provided with friction brake or clutch mechanism allowing slipping when there is excessive strain, in order that when alimit of movement of the carriages or the load is reached, such slipping will avoid damage to the mechanism. a
It is to be observed that each of the cables, G and F, has both its ends secured in such manner as to avoid twisting'of the cable during the operation of the apparatus, and that the part of the load-line'between the drum, H and the clamp, C issimilarly held against twisting. Thus these lines are not duringoperation put into such twisted conditionas will cause kinking-the douiblingancl t ist ng upon each other f p rts of the cables. In the operation of similar apparatus, in which the cables are not held against twisting, serious delays and sometimes derangement and breakage of the apparatus result from such twisting. Time lost and the replacing of damaged parts make large loss items.
The rollers, B and C serve to prevent the carriages from rising on the track cable, A.
I claim as my invention,
1. In an apparatus of the nature described, the combination withan elevated track and drums, of a clampcarriage supported on said track, a load carriage supported on said track between the clamp carriage and the drums, the load carriage having means for guiding the load line and having means for guiding the clamp carriage line and the clamp carriage having means for immovably clamping the load line to said carriage and having a guide roller for the clamp carriage line, a clamp carriage line having one endattached to the load carriage and extending thence horizontally to and around said guide roller of the clamp carriage and then horizontally back through the load carriage to the clamp carrlage line drum, a load carrlage l1ne secured by one end to the load carriage and extending thence to the load carriage line drum, and a loadline extending loosely through the guidingmeans on the load carriage and through the fastening means on the clamp carriage and thence away from'said carriage in the direction opposite the direction of the load carriage to a guide roller, and thence to other guidingrmeans and to the load line drum, substantially as described.
2. In an apparatus of the nature described,\the combination with an elevated track and drums, of a clamp carriagesupported on said track, a load carriage supported on said track between the clamp carriage and the drums, the load carriage having two clevises and means for guiding the load line and having means for guiding the clamp carriage line and the clamp carriage having means for immovably clamping the load line to said carriage and having a guide roller for the clamp carriage line, a clamp carriage line having one end attached to one of the clevises of the load carriage and extending thence horizontally to and around said guide roller of the clamp carriage and then horizontally back through the load carriage to the clamp carriage line drum, a load carriage line secured by one end to the other clevis of the load carriage and extending thence to the load carriage line drum, and a load line extending loosely through the guiding means on the load carriage and through'the fastening means on the clamp carriage and thence away from said carriage in thediregtion opposite the direction of the load carriage to a guide roller, and thence to other guiding means and to the load line drum, substantially as described.
3. In an apparatus of the nature described, the combination with an elevated track and drums, of a clamp carriage supported on said track, a load carriage supported on said track between the clamp carriage and the drums, the load carriage having a swivel block for guiding the load line and having means for guiding the clamp carriage line and the clamp carriage having means for immovably clamping the load line to said carriage and having a guide roller for the clamp carriage line, a clamp carriage line having one end attached to the load carriage and extending thence horizon tally to and around said guide roller of the clamp carriage and then horizontally back through the load carriage to the clamp carriage line drum, a load carriage line secured by one end to the load carriage and extending thence to the load carriage line drum, and a load line extending loosely through the swivel block on the load carriage and through the fastening means on the clamp carriage and thence away from said carriage in the direction opposite the direction of the load carriage to a guide roller, and thence to other guidingmeans and to the load line drum, substantially as described.

In an apparatus of the nature described, the combination with an elevated track and drums, of a clamp carriage supported on said track, a load carriage supported on said track between the clamp carriage and the drums, the load carriage having means for guiding the load line and having means for guiding the clamp carriage line and the clamp carriage having a clamping block for immovably clamping the load line to said carriage and having a guide roller for the clamp carriage line, a clamp carriage line having one end attached to the load carriage and extending thence hori- Zontally to and around said guide roller of the clamp carriage and then horizontally back through the load carriage to the clamp carriage line drum, a load carriage line secured by one end to the load carriage and extending thence to the load carriage line drum, and a load line extending loosely through the guiding means on the load carriage and through the fastening means on the clamp carriage and thence away from said carriage in the direction opposite the direction of the load carriage to a guide roller, and thence to other guiding means and to the load line drum, substantially as described.

In an apparatus of the nature described, the combination with an elevated track and drums, of a first carriage and a second carriage each having in its upper part Wheels resting on said track and the first of said carriages having means for guiding the load-line and having means for guiding the first cable and the second carriage having a rocking clamping block for immovably fastening the loadline to said carriage and the second carriage having a. guide roller for the first cable, a first cable having one end attached to the first carriage and extending thence horizontally to and around the guide roller of the second carriage and then horizontally back through the first carriage to a drum, a second cable secured by one end to the first carriage and extending thence in the direction opposite the direction of the first carriage and to a drum, and a load-line extending loosely through the guiding means on the first carriage and through the rocking clamping block on the second carriage and thence away from said carriage in the direction opposite the direction of the first carriage and to a drum, substantially as described.

In an apparatus of the nature described, the combination with an elevated track and drums of a clamp carriage supported on said track, a load carriage supported on said track between the clamp carriage and the drums, each of said carriages comprising pairs of bars arranged to over lap and form a triangular structure, the load carriage having means for guiding the load line and having means for guiding the clamp carriage line and the clamp carriage having means for immovably clamping the load line to said carriage and having a guide roller for the clamp carriage line, a clamp carriage line having oneend attached to the load carriage and extending thence horizontally to and around said guide roller of the clamp carriage and then horizontally back through the load carriage to the clamp carriage line drum, a load carriage line secured by one end to the load carriage and extending thence to the load carriage line drum, anda load line extending loosely through the guiding means on the load carriage and through the fastening means on the clamp carriage and thence away from said carriage in the direction opposite the direction of the load carriage to a guide roller, and thence to other guiding means and to the load line drum, substantially as described.

In an apparatus of the nature described, the combination with an elevated track and drums, of a clamp carriage supported on said track a load carriage supported on said track between the clamp carriage and the drums, each of said carriages comprising pairs of bars arranged to over-lap and form a triangular structure and the load carriage having a pair of opposed load line guiding rollers and having means for guiding the clamp carriage line and the clamp carriage having means for wcarriage and having a immovably clamping the load line to said clamp. carriage line, a clamp carriage line having one end attached to the load'carriage and extendingthence horizontally to and around said guide roller of the clamp carriage and then horizontally back between a tion opposite the direction of the load carriage to a guide roller, and thence to other guiding means and to the load line drum, substantially as described.

thecombination with an elevated track and drums, of a clamphcarriage "supported on said track, a load carriage supported on said track between the clamp carriage; and
' the drums; each. carriage comprising bars arranged to over-lap and form a'trlangular frame and theload carriagehaving means for guiding the load line and having means for guiding the clamp carriage line and-the clamp carriage having means for immovably clamping the load line to said carriage and having intermediate its angles a guide roller for the clamp carriage line, a clamp carriage line having one end attached to the load carriage and extending thence horizontally to and around said guide roller of the clamp carriage and then horizontally back through the load carriage to the clamp carriage line drum, a load carriage line secured by one end to the load carriage and extending thence to the load carriage line drum, and a load line extending loosely through the guiding means on the load carriage and through the fastening means on the clamp carriage and thence away from said carriage in the direction opposite the direction of the load carriage to a guide roller, and thence to other guiding means and to the load line drum,vsubstantiallyas described.

In an apparatus of the nature described, the combination with an elevated track and drums, of a first carriage and a second carriage each having in its upper part wheels resting on said track and the first of sald carriages having means for guiding the loadline and having means for guiding the first cable and the second carriage having a channeled rocking clamping block for immovably fastening the load-line to said carriage and the second carriage having a guide roller for the first cable, a first cable having one end attached to the first carriage and extending thence horizontally to and around the guide roller of the second carriage and guide roller for the then horizontally back through the first carriage to a drum, a second cable secured by one end to the first carriage and extending thence in the direction opposite the direction of the first carriage and to a drum, and a load-line extending looselythrough the guiding means on the first carriage and through the channel of the rocking clamping block on the second carriage and thence away from said carriage in the direction opposite the direction of the first carriage and to a drum, substantially as described. 1

'In an apparatus of the nature ids scribed, the vcombination with an elevated track and drums, of a first carriage and a second carriage each having in its upper part wheels resting on said track and the first of said carriages having means for guiding the load-line and having means for guiding the first cable and the'second carriage having a clamping block for immovably fastening the load-line to said carriage said block being journaled on screw bolts extending into the sides of said block, and the second carriage having a guide roller for the first cable, a first cable having one endattached to the first carriage and extendingthence horizontally to and around the gulde roller of the second carriage and then horizontally back through the first carriage to a drum, a second cable secured by one end to the first carriage and extending thence in the direction opposite the direc-- tion of the first carriage and to a drum, and a load-line extending loosely through the guiding means on the first carriage and through the clamping block on the second carriage and thence away from said car riage in the direction opposite the direction of the first carriage and to a drum, substantially as described.

In an apparatus of the nature described, the combination with an elevated track and drums, of a first carriage and a second carriage each having in its upper partwheels resting on said track and the first of said carriages having means for guiding the load-line and having means for guiding the first cable and the second carriage having a clamping block comprising U-bolts for immovably fastening the loadliue to said carriage and having a guide roller for the first cable a first cable having one end attached to the first carriage and extending thence horizontally to and around the guide roller of the second carriage and then horizontally back through the first carriage to a drum, a second cable secured by one end to the first carriage and extending thence in the direction opposite the direction of the first carriage and to a drum, and a load-line extending loosely through the guiding means on the first carriage and through the clamping block on the second carriage and thence away from said carriage in the direction opposite the direction of the first carriage and to a drum, substantially as described.

In an apparatus of the nature described, the combination with an elevated track and drums, of a clamp carriage and a load carriage supported on said track, said carriages being movable lengthwise on the track independently of each other and the upper parts of said carriages being so formed that said parts may abut against each other while other parts of the carriages are free from each other, whereby, while said carriages bear against each other, the load carriage is free to swing sidewise independently of the clamp carriage, and said carriages being adapted for engagement with the below-mentioned lines, and a clamp carriage line and a load carriage line and a load line associated with said carriages and said drums, substantially as described.

In an apparatus of the nature described, the combination with an elevated track and drums, of a clamp carriage supported on said track, a load carriage supported on said track between the clamp carriage and the drums, said carriages being movable lengthwise on the track independently of each other and the upper parts of said carriages being so formed that said parts may abut against each other while other parts of the carriages are free from each other, whereby, while said carriages bear against each other, the load carriage is free to swing sidewise independently of the clamp carriage, and said carriages being adapted for engagement with the belowmentioned lines, and a clamp carriage line and a load carriage line and a load line associated with said carriages and said drums, substantially as described.
14.111 an apparatus of the nature described, the combination with an elevated track and drums, of a clamp carriage and a load carriage supported on said track and each of said carriages comprising pairs of bars arranged to over-lap and form a triangular structure, bumpers on the ends of the horizontal bars, and a load line and a clamp carriage line and a load carriage line associated with said carriages and drums, substantially as described.
