Be it known that we, LOUIS VICTOR THOMAS and JOSEPH-ALEXANDRE GURIN, citizens of the French Republic, and residents of Lyon, France, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in TwolStroke-Cycle Internal-Combustion Engines, (for which we have filed an application in France, June 20,1914, Patent No. 473,792,) of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to two stroke cycle internal combustion engines of the type wherein a piston works in part in a power or explosion cylinder and in part in a pump chamber, with a slide or piston valve controlling the supply of fuel.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 is a vertical section of a twin cylinder engine wherein the improvements constituting the invention are incorporated.
Fig. 2 is a vertical section taken in a plane perpendicular to that of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a vertical section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
A designates the piston valve, which is reciprocable in a cylindrical valve box S having a centrally disposed inlet port T, and toward each end two parts T1 vand T2 controlled by the valve so as to enable the lower enlarged parts of the pistons N to draw carbureted air or other gaseous fuel into the pump chambers B and then force the same into a gas chamber or reservoir C. The latter communicates with the explosion chamber B1 of the engine cylinder by means of a supply port T3. One part of the invention consists in arranging that the ends of the valve box form air-tight compartments wherein air is compressed by the movement of the piston valve, the compressed air serving to cushion the valve at the ends of its path.
Another part of the invention consists in effecting the actuation of the piston valve by means of a shaft arranged transversely of the crank shaft at or near one end thereof. of the crank shaft H and driven at the same speed as the shaft H by means of worm gears I and J. The worm wheel I is fixed to one end of the shaft H, outside the crank case H1, thus enabling the bearings of the shaft to be placed closely together and involving no loss of rigidity.
Another part of the invention consists in inclosing the shaft G in a gear box M disposed in front of the motor, joined to the crank case H1 and having a detachable cover M1 the said cover serving to protect the gear in the box but forming no part of the supporting structure. Outside the gear box the shaft G drives the magneto K and lubricating pump L, and it may be used for driving other accessory mechanism associated with the motor. When the cover M1 is removed the gear in the box can-be easily inspected.
Another part of the invention consists inv providing the pistons N with piston rings P about midway between their ends, serving in part to increase tightnessbetween the explosion chambers B1 and the pump lchambers B, and in part (and more especially) to increase the tightness between the pump chambers B and the ports T3, perfect tightness of the pump chambers being essential to efficient working of the motor. In the construction shown each piston has two piston rings P spaced somewhat apart.
Another part of the invention consists in providing within each piston an annular cup or well O, with ducts Q leading therefrom into a circular groove or channel R in the outer surface of the piston, between the rings P. The oil projected in the usual manner into the piston is collected in the said well and flows through the ducts into the channel R, in which it is retained by the rings P.
What we claim as our invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the a piston working in said chambers, a valve box having a gas inlet port, a gas delivery port, and a port communicating with said pump chamber, a reciprocating slide valve in said boX controlling said ports, a crank shaft actuated by said piston a shaft arranged transversely to said crank shaft, actuating means connecting said crank shaft to said transverse shaft, an eccentric on said transverse shaft lever mechanism connecting said leccentric to said valve whereby said valve is reciprocated, a magneto connected` to said transverse shaft, a lubricating pump 10 connected to said transverse shaft, and a" box having a removable cover inclosing said transverse shafts and eccentric.
