designed for recording the movement and service of railway cars including main and supplemental indexes for numerically designated cars, the latter being adapted'to recelve entries of car movements and the like when the entry spaces of the places of the main index are filled, and the pages of said supplementary index bearing alphabetically lettered tabs to receive entries of cars identified by proper or other names, in addition to entries of the numerically designated cars.

Another object is the provision of a book ofthis type wherein the alphabetically lettered tabs for use inindexing named cars are utilized to distinguish thenumbered tabs of the main index from the numbered tabs'of the supplemental index and to assistin locating the proper page of the supplemental index on which to make entry of a certain car number, such supplemental index page being designated at the top of the main index page when the entry spaces of the latter are filled. A further objectis the provision of a car record book of this type wherein the arrange- I ment ofthe several appropriately designated groups of pages is such as to afford convenience in the matter .of making entries therein I or in tracing the movement of cars. Fur,-

thermore, the'specific' arrangement of the main and'supplemental indexes affords the utmost of economy inthe, matter of space and material.

invention consists in certaln novel features of construction as hereinafter shown and described and then specifically pointed out in the claims, and in the drawings illustrative of the .preferred embodiment of the invention.

Each page of the main index'isidentified by a protruding tab 8 and these tabs are marked with numerals beginningwith O0, ()1 and so on up to 99.

Referring more particularly to Fig. 2 wherein an enlargement of one ofthe main index sheets is represented and identified by the tab number 49, the numerals 10 indicate a plurality of horizontal lines intersected at intervals by appropriately spaced vertical lines 11, the space tothe extreme left of the page is'adapted to receive the initial of-the car whose entry is made therein whereas the second space is reserved for the numerals of the car exclusive of the last twowhic'h latter are placed in the next two relatively narrow spaces as clearly shownin Fig. 2. -.The relatively small space to thefright of the car numberis adapted to receive appropriate data relating to thekind or type of the car whereas the horizontal space between each two adjacent horizontal lines 10 to the right of the column headed kind is marked by arelatively narrow division line 12; Inthe sixth division or entry space of eachhorizontal rowand above the division line 12 is marked arrived and below the line is marked departed. To the right of this vertical column of spaces alternately marked arrived and departed, the several succeeding verticalcolumns are headed appropriately to receive such data as is essential in recording and directing'the movement of the railway stock.

In carrying out the invention, all cars bearing numbers as means of identification are recorded on' the main index pages 5, except when the space of sa d main pages is entirely filled and in such instance the pages of the supplemental index to be hereinafter described, is utilized. As exemplifying the mode of entering cars in the main index it is resumed that it is desired to enter car numher 183%. The last two numerals of the car number are used as a key to the disposition of the car in the main index and page l9 identified by the tab bearing the same numeral is turned to and the car number is placed in the vertical columns headed by the word number, and in such position that the last two numerals occupy the two relatively narrow spaces above described. In the extreme left space of the horizontal row theinitial of the car is placed and to the right of the rows arrived and departed such data as properly belongs in the several spaces is entered therein.

The leaves or pages 6 of the supplemental index are marked off similarly to the pages 5 of the main index by the horizontal lines 14 and vertical lines 15 except that the supplemental index pages 6 are divided centrally as indicated at 16 by .a horizontal space produced between adjacent double lines. The division of the pages of the supplemental index is a matter of economy and it is evident that the vertical lines on the page supporting the columns are disposed in alinement and are headed similarlyto the columns of the main index pages 5 in order to receive proper data relating tothe movement of the railway cars. The spaces between the horizontal lines 14 of the supplemental index pages are divided by relatively narrow division lines 18 which extend from the sixth column line 15 to the extreme right of the page, and, like the spaces of the pages of the main index, are

' Each of thepages of the supplemental index is provided with one of the numbered tabs tary 19 and the group of tabs 19 extend from a point adjacent the top of the book to a point substantially central of the top and bottom thereof.

It will be noted that when the spaces of a designated page in the main index 5 are com pletely filled a page 6 in the supplemental index for receiving additional entries properly belonging on the page first mentioned is selected and that supplemental index page is indicated at the top of the page 5 of said main index page after the words For making entry on supplemental use supplementab as more clearly, illustrated in Fig. 2. Thus should the recorder desire to make entry of a car properly belonging on a page on the main index wherein all of the spaces were occupied, he would, by reference to the note at the top of the page 5 ascertain the page in the supplemental index on which such entry should be made and accordingly proceed to make the entry thereon. Furthermore by this arrangement it is evident that a high degree of convenience is afforded when reviewing the movement of cars as when a certain car properly belonging on a certain page in the main index is not found thereon the exact page in the supplemental index on which its entry has been made may be readily determined.

Each page of the supplemental index is provided with a second tab 20 arranged below the tabs 19 and the tabs 20 of the several pages are so arranged as to be clearly visible when the pages 5 of the main index are turned back as suggested at the lower right hand corner of Fig. 1. These tabs 20 are arranged one below the other from the vertical center of the book to the bottom edge thereof and they are consecutively marked with the letters of the alphabet beginning with A. This arrangement of tabs is provided for convenience in entering cars identified by names, such as Pullman cars and the like. The manner of making entry of a named car is suggested at the lower part of Fi 3 wherein entry of the Pullman car 1 ary is made. This entry, it will be noted, is made on the page of the supplemental index designated by the lettered tab M and as will be understood names of other cars are similarly entered on the pages of the supplemental index according to the initial of the name.

Both the front and back of each pageof the main index is correspondingly marked to permit entries of car movements to be made thereon and likewise the front and back faces of the pages of the supplemental index are similarly marked.

o The central division of the rows of horizontal spaces provided on the supplemental index pages by the horizontal space 16 are designed for receiving entries of cars of differing numerals for instance, if page A 18 of the supplemental index is indicated for receiving entries of numbered cars whose numbers terminate with the number 19, entries of cars ending with such numerals are placed in the lower division of the page, as suggested in Fig. 3 whereas entries of cars whose numbers terminate with 48 are placed adjacent the top of page A 13 as suggested at the top of Fig. 3. Likewise, the upper and lower divisions of the horizontal rows of spaces on the back or reverse side of page A 13, are utilized for receiving entries of cars whose numerals terminate with the numbers 50 and 51. As will be understood, thepages of the supplemental index receive entries of named cars according to the initial of the name of the car, in addition to the entries of the numbered cars which latter are only entered thereon when the pages of the main index are completely filled.

What I claim is:

1. A record book comprising main and sup: plemental entry pages marked to provide'di, vided rows of horizontal spaces, designating characters marked upon the pages of the main entry part of the book, designating characters for the supplemental entry pages having distinguishing characteristics difierentiating from the designating characters of the main entry part, and means at the top of each main entry page for designating a page in the supplemental entry part to permit entries to be made in the latter when the pages of the main entry pages are filled.

2. A book comprising main and supplemental entry pages markedto provide a plurality of horizontal rows of spaces, said main entry pages being identified by numerals for receiving data'relatingto numbered cars, the supplemental entry pages being consecutively numbered and each main entry page having designating characters thereon referring to a certain supplemental entry page whereby entries 0]": numof spaces on the main entry pages, and ini dexing means for facilitating entry of named cars on the supplemental entry pages in addition to the entries thereon of the numbered cars.

3. A car record book comprisingmain and supplemental entry pages having horizontal rows of spaces marked thereon,numbered tabs carried bythe main entry pages for facilitating indexing of entries of numbered cars thereon, identifying tabs carried by the supplemental entry pages, means on each main entry page designating a page of the supplemental entry pages whereby the spaces of the latter may be utilized for receiving entries of numbered cars subsequent to the filling of the spaces of the main entry pages, and alphabetically letteredtabs also carried bythesupplemental entry, pages to permit entry of data relating to named cars thereon in addition to entries of numbered cars.
