CONTAINER.
Specification of Letters'Patentri Patented Aug. 9,1921.
Application filed August 22, 1919. Serial No. 319,142.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CORA H. CAn'rLnDeE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have 1nvented certain new and useful Improve ments in Containers, of which the following exact description. I
The present invention relatesv to containers, more particularly adapted for containing and dispensing liquid products, such as salad oils, evaporated milk, syrups, etc.
An object of the invention is to provide for an effective draining of the contents of the, container and to prevent waste in dispensing from the container by the flowing of the contents over the outer surface of the container.
In containers as now commonly used,
there is a narrow flange at the top surrounding the opening which receives the sealing cap, and in dispensing liquid products therefrom, the flange prevents a complete draina ing of the contents from the container. As
a consequence, a considerable waste ensues, and further, in such containers considerable annoyance and waste is caused in the dispensing operation, for the reason that the contents in passing over the flange flows over the outer surface of the container, which not only causes waste, but is very annoying,
making the container a disagreeable article. to handle. Such ObJQCtlOllS are overcome by the dispensing container constituting the subject of the present invention.
The present invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which- I Figure 1 shows in perspective a dispensingcontainer embodying the invention;
Fig. 2 shows a vertical, sectional view;
Fig. 3 shows a top view'illustrating'the pouring opening; and
Fig. 4 shows a view similarto Fig. 2, but showing the flange cut to form the pouring opening. 7 V z Similar reference. characters will be employed to designate corresponding parts.
The container consists of a substantially cylindrical body portion 1 permanently closed at its lower end by a bottom 2 and having at its upper end a' flange 3 which receives a removable frictionally held sealing cap 4 which fits in and is fixedly held in a circular opening in the flange 3. As so far described, the container is of usual and ordinary construction and is of a form which is now commonly used, beinggenerally made thin sheet materia In such containers much difficulty is experienced in draining the contents and this has resulted in a considerable waste. I provide for the effective draining of the contents by providing the body tion 1 with a vertically extending drainage channel 5, which as shown,'is formed by bulging the body portion 1, in theprocess of manufacturing the body portion by a suit of sheet. metal such as tin or other suitable able die and extendingv the flange 3 at one' point as shown at 6 to cover the drainage channel atthe top,
such drainage channel exof the body portion 1 to a point at or near the bottom thereof, the bottom of the con-.
tamer being preferably'circular, and provid- Y ing-upon the inner surface ofthe container a drainage channel 'or gutter. end of the channel 5 is closed by a'portion of the'flange 3 projecting in the form of a semi-circular lip 6 outside of the; flange of the cap 4.
' The upper The proj ction formed by the channel 5',
while suflicient to effectively act as a. drainer and dispenser, is not large enough to 'interferewith the packing of the receptacles in a shipping case; in fact, they may be so placedin a shipping case that the projections will comewithin the space formed betweenadj acentcontainers.
As shown in Figs. 3 and 4, the receptacle facilitate the draining of the entire contents, I
thus eliminating waste.
Having thusdescribed invention, 1'
claim as new, and desire-to secure by Letters Patent: I s
1. A dispensing container, comprising" a body p'ortion,'a vertically extending drain ing channel formedin the wall thereof'and discharging edge of the wall and'extended to cover the upper end of the channel, a filling openin from the upper edge thereof, a flange permanently secured about'the upper in said flange and a sealing cap fitted in the i flange opening. g r I 2. A dispensing container, comprislng a 7 0 tending downwardly from the upper edge body port-ion, a vertically extending drainlng' channel formed in the Wall thereof and dischurging frmn upper edge thereof,
said channel extendlng from a point at or near the bottom of the body portion to the upper edge and gradually enlarged 0n diverging lines from the bottom to the top,
cover the upper end of the channel, a, filling 10' opening formed in said flange and a sealing cap fitted to the epenmg.
