Specification of Letters-Patent. I Patented Aug-Q9 1921.
Applicationfiled aanuar 'ie, 1920. Serial no. 351,796.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, Fnnn S. Oink, a citizen of the United Stat-es,and resident of New-' ton, in the county of Middlesex and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Separable Fastener-sand Means for Securing Their Sockets to Carrylarly, though not exclusively, to improvements 1n the construction of sockets of separable fasteners and means for securing the same to their carrying fabrics. My invenpending application, Serial No.
tion also comprises an improved method of securing such sockets to their carryingfabrics.
In the drawings, which show a preferred form of one embodiment of my invention: Figure 1 is a central transverse section,
partly in elevation, through a preferred form of fasteners;
Fig. 2 illustrates diagrammatically the relative positioning of the parts of a preferred form of socket and socket-securing means prior to assembly thereof to secure the socket to its carrying fabric; and
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the socket shown in Fig. 2 prior to assembly thereof.
Referring to the drawings and to the preferred form of my invention selected for illustrative purposes, I haveshown a fastener including a stud 4 secured to its carrying fabric 5 in any suitable way, and cooperating with a socket casing 6, which may carry a spring 7 of any suitable form, but preferably U-shaped, as shown in my co- 307,111, filed June 27, 1919. The socket casing is preferably provided with expansible projections 8 and secured to its carrying fabric 9 by expansion of the projections 8 over a socket-securing ring 10. The socket-securing ring 10 is preferably interlocked with the casing 6 to prevent relative dis: placement of the parts by movement of the securing ring 10 in the direction of the face of the socket. The expansible projections 8, which grip the fabric against the socketsecuring ring 10, preferably without any I: perforation of "the fabric, are preferably rounded at their outer edge to prevent catchlngvin and tearing of the fabric.
here the preferred form ofmy invention illustrated in the drawings is utilized, the socket carrying fabric adjacent the socket is not, as is usually the case,-concealed by an overlylng cap, but on the contrary is visible over the top of the socket.
The expansion or distortion of the parts 8 is effected through the fabric, preferably by means of a die 11 adapted to operate through the fabric. The socket casing may be supported during the expanding operation in any suitable way, but preferably by a lower dle 12 which may, if desired, include a projectionlS adapted to enter the socket casing in a manner similar to the entrance therein of the stud.
It will be understood that I use the word fabric in its broader sense to include not only woven materials, but any flexible carrying medium.
While I have shown and described a preferred form of one embodiment of my invention and a preferred method of practising the same, it will b-eunderstood that changes involving omission, substitution, alteration and reversal of parts, and even changes in the mode of operation, may be made without departing from the scope of my invention, which is best defined in the following claims.
Claims: I
1. A socket for separable fasteners comprising a plate having. a stud-receiving aperture therethrough, a flange uprising from the periphery of said plate, expansible portions above said flange, a ring for surrounding said socket with the casing-carrying fabric interposed between said socket and ring, said ring of an internal diameter to pass over said expansible portions and the interposed cloth prior to expansion of said portions, while of insufficient diameter to pass over said flange and the interposed cloth, whereby when said expansible portions are expanded they may preclude displacementof said ring and interposed fabric fasteners comprising but three pieces,
namely, a casing, a spring and a securing ring, said casing including a plate having a stud-receiving aperture and presenting a peripheral upstanding rim parts of Which overlie and underlie said ring with the socket-carrying fabric interposed, and With the fabric exposed above said casing.
3. A metallic-secured socket for separable fasteners comprising a casing and a securing ring, said casing of one piece providing a stud-receiving aperture and a peripheral upstandin rim, parts of said rim overlying and under lying said ring with the socketcarrying fabric interposed and with the fabric exposed above said casing.
4. A metallic-secured socket for separable fasteners comprising, When assembled and mounted on the socket-carrying fabric, a casing providing a plate having a stud-receiving aperture therethrough, a peripheral flange projecting from said plate toward the socket-carrying fabric,- a securing ring on the opposite side of the socket-carrying fabric, said flange underlying and expanded over said ring, with the fabric interposed, the fabric stretched across the expanded portion of said flange and centrally thereof unsupported on both sides.
In testimony whereof, I have signed m name to this specification.
FRED S. CARR.
