UMBHELLA.
APPLICATION FILED 'JULY 24. I9I9.
Ahwenteflmlg. 9,1921.
v f l E I IIIII l Mdm PHILIP dlnonwnnn or VANCOUVER, BairrsniooLUMBiA, CANADA.
i MBRELLA.
i vApplicationliled. 'July-24,
- rBe it known thatY Piume C. FoLwnLL,
a citizen or' tlie'Dominion of Canada, residing at Vancouver, in the'Provincevof 'Brit-v ishv Columbia, Canada,.have invented certain new and useful improvements in Umbrellas, l ofwhich' the following isa speciiication.
Thisinveiition'relates to a means *for re-A "movably connecting' the ribsotr an umbrella vlower endsof the rib struts to the slidable member by which the umbrella is expanded.
"The intention is'"particularly described in the following specification, reference` being made tothe drawings by which it is accompanied, in which:
oint at which the ends of the rib struts are withdrawn from their crown on the slidable member, and j Fig. 6 is an elevation of the central stem' or stick of the umbrella showing the application of the invention thereto.
The central stem Qof the umbrella, to the" lower end of which-the handle is connected,
is'preterably tubular and adjacent the'orown the tubular tip 8 is socketed onto a solid end d secured in the end of 2 to project beyond it. rlhis solid end fr has an annular groove adjacent the oint of the tip connection and secured on the end of the tip to project slightly below the line of the oint with the stem is secured the crown 6, the lowerend of which crown is circumferentially grooved i as at 7. from the inner side and is radially slotted/as Vat S to receive the ends -9 of the several ribs of the umbrella.
rlhe tip 3 with its crown 6 is secured on the projecting end 4 of the stein by a pin 11 through them which pin may also secure the canopy which retains the cover in place.
The upper end of each rib, instead of being apertured to receive the usual wire retaining ring, has a T projection 10. This projection is preferably formed on the end of a piece 9 which is clenched or otherwise secured in the channel of the rib end, see
Specification of Letters Patent.
'Patented'AuOx 9,
crown before the tip is'applied to the central stem and- .when so applied, and when thel crown is applied to the stein 2 the rib ends are retainedfinposition in the groove with fi'ree pivotal' n i'ove'ment outward within the necessary range fBy removing lthe securing pin l1` 'and endwise' vmoving the v.tip ,3 to bring the groove,5.oppos1te'the lowerlip of 4thel crown'groove 7, individual ribs may bere'mo'ved and replaced. Y
The lowerY ends of the rib struts 13l are pro vided withzends 14V having T4 projections similar to those-10of the ribl ends. These ends 14 iit in the radial slots 15 of an inner ircumferential groove in the upper end `of L Y the slidable sleeve or runner 16, by which the umbrella frame is extended, inthe same manner as those of the crown 6. v y
Reinovalot these ends 111 is also eiected in a Vmanner similar tofthat providedin the crown 6. The removal means is at Vfthev up-` per limit of their movement of the runner 16 where the stem 2 is socketed at 17, asA shown in Figs. 5 and 6. Adjacent the' eXL..
ternal joint 17 of the socket the projecting` portion 18 is provided with a groove 19 which, when the socket is endwise drawn apart to bring the grooveopposlte the upper y edge'of the T end retaining groove l5, will permit the removal and replacement of the ends 14.'
rlhis socket connection is held in theclosed position by a pin 2O secured on the endvof Fig-s. 1 and 2. The rib ends 9 are separately l `vinserted, one in each radial groove Si'of the the spring. 21, to project througha hole drilled in 18, which registers with one in the socket end of 2.
.The ends of the ribs and of their struts are by this means connected respectively to the crown and"slidable Vmember Vof the stick in a manner that is positive and-that they cannot be accidentally displaced, but they can be readily removed `for repair or replacement, Y
Having now particularly described myinvention, l hereby declare that what I claim. as newl and desire to be protected by Letl ters Patent, is: f
1. A means for securing the upper end of the ribs of an umbrella to the crown; said means comprising a stick having a circumferential groove, a crown removably secured on the stick adjacent the groove, the lower edge of which crown is outwardly bent and` inturned to form a circumferential groove,
the wall of which is radially slotted, ribs having T ends adapted to fit the slotted groove of the crown, and means permitting endwise movement of the stick in relation to the crown to bring the grooves of stick and crown together and permit removal of theT ends.
2. A means for securing the upper end of the ribs of an umbrella to the crown, said means comprising thercombination with a stick the tip of which is removably connected with a socketed joint in the male member of which is a circumferential groove, of a crown secured to one end of the joint connection, the lower edge of which crown is outwardly bent-and inturned to form a retaining circumferential groove the wall of said groove being radially slotted, ribs having T ends adapted to fit the groove of thecrown through the slot-s, and means permitting endwise movementof the socket joint to bring the circumferential groove of the male member adjacent the groove of the crown.
3. A means for securing the upper end of assume the ribs of the umbrella to the crown'and the lower ends of the stretchers to the runner, said means comprising a central stick having socketed joints adjacent the crown and runner in the male member of each of which joints is a circumferential groove, a crown secured to the stick adjacent one socketed joint, a runner endwise movable on the stick, the adjacent edges of which crown and runner are outwardly and inwardly turned to form a circumferential groove in each and radially slotted for the reception of the rib and stretcher ends, ribs and stretchers the ends of which are 'l' shaped and adapted to t the slotted groove of the crown and runner respectively, means for securing the socketed joints, and means for releasing such securing means that the groove of the male member of each vjoint may be brought adj a cent the groove of the crown and runner respectively.
ln testimony whereof I affix my signature.
