MACHINE FOB FORGING ARTICLES FROM METAL BLANKS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented AW. e, 1921.
Application filedNovember 17, 1919. Serial No. 338,579.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD J. PAQUE, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Machines for Forging Articles from Metal Blanks, of which the following is a specification. v
The object of my invention is a machine having means for automatically centering a blank upon one member of the die, of automatically stripping the article from the die and of ejecting the article from the die.
These and other objects are attained by the means described in the specification and illustrated in the accompanying, drawings, in which Figure 1, is a perspective view of a press embodying my invention, part of one of the guide posts being broken away to expose the parts of the forge in the rear thereof.
Fig. 2, is a detail view partly in'section and partly in side elevation of the mold members. j
-Figs. 3 and 4c, are sectional views of the steel blank and of the articles such as blank forgings from which bevel gears can be machined, respectively.
Referring to the parts:
'The .machine embodying my invention comprises a die having a female member A, a male member B, a reciprocating head D, which reciprocates upon guide posts 0Z, and is moved, preferably by hydraulic pressure to carry the male member downward to compress the metal blank which has been placed within the female member of the die.
The female member has a central recess a, below which is a central axial bore a and a transverse bore 06 In the bottom of recess a is seated the head 6 of .an ejector whose stem 6 extends through the bore a within which it is retained by a pin 6 which is fixed in the side walls of the bore a and projects through a longitudinal slot 6 in the stem 6. Within the transverse'bore a is mounted a lever 6 whose end projects beneath the end of the stem 6'.
Male member B has a central internal screw-threaded recess 79 into which is screwed the stem of a boss I) which has a tapered end 6 which forms the inner walls of the die chamber, when the die members have been brought into contact. This tapered end 6 performs also the function of centering the ring blank within the recess a.
A ring member F is mounted reciprocally upon the male die, and surrounds the boss 6, by means of bars H which have slots h for engaging the shanks of pins h, which are secured in the sides of the male member 13. The bars H are secured to the ring member F by means of pins Mounted pivotally upon each side of the female member A are retainer members which com prise arms is, which are pivoted to the sides of the female member, and carry retainer rods K which are adapted to engage the up per faces of the ring F after the die members have beenbrought into contact with each other.
In operation an annular ring blank, which is to be changed from the form shown in Fig. 3,.to the form shown in Fig. 4:, is placed within the recess (1 upon top of the ejector, the retainers being placed in the position shown in Fig. 1. Then the head D is lowered, the tapered end of the boss enters the ring blank and centers it within the recess. Upon completion of the stroke of the head D, the metal of the ring blank is compressed between the walls formed by the recess a, ring member F, the tapered end 6 of the boss and the ejector 6.
Then rods K are engaged with the upper .face of the ring F and the head D is raised.
Thereby the article is stripped from the boss, then the retainers are thrown to one die, a male die having a boss of smaller diameter than the recess and adapted to move in axial alinement with the recess and having a tapered end adapted to enter the recess and to form the 'inner wallsof a die chamber, a ring member, means for m0unt ing the ring member reciprocally around. the boss so that thelower face of the ring member forms the upper Walls of the die in the closed position Off the dies, a retainer carried by the female die and adapted to be turn movement of the male die and means,
adaptedto actuate theejeetor. w 7 10 In testimony whereof, I have subscrlbed my hame this 12th day of Nevember, 1919., l t EDWARD J. P A'Q U
