GEORGE W. GREGORY, on SYRACUSE, new YORK.
IMPRQVEMENT IN TRUSSES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 138,640, dated May 6, 1873; applic ion filed April 30, 1873. I
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE WILSON GREGORY, of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Truss and Fastening Attachment.
The first object of my invention is to ena ble the pad to be adjusted readily on the trussplate; and it consists in providing the trussplate with a series of end and central slots, from one to the other of which pads of various desired shapes may be applied, and the pad working in connection with this truss plate when adapted for hernia has slots at about right-angles to the slots in the plate. The second object of my invention is to provide an attachment for readily connecting and disconnecting the straps and truss-plate; and it consists in a plate or frame provided with suitable buckle-like tongues to hold the straps or bands, and. with a hook, projection, or opening to engage a slot, opening-hook, or post on the truss-plate or supporter andI do hereby declare that the following specification taken in connection with the drawing furnished and forming a part of the same, is a clear and accurate description thereof.
Figurel is an outside view of the trussplate; Fig. 2, a horizontal section of the same Fig. 3, a view of the back of the pad as adapted for hernia. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 5 is a view of the fastening attachment; Fig. 6, a side view with buckle-like tongues upturned Fig. -7, a view of a tongue removed from the plate. Fig. 8 is amodified form of fastening, having an opening instead of a hook Fig. 9, aview of part of a strap with a piece attached to receive the hook represented by Fig. 1.0.
A represents the truss-plate, made preferably of hard India rubber or metal, and provided with ribs or projections to bear against the person, in order to prevent the plate from slipping and provide for ventilation. This truss-plate is provided with vertical slots a a atthe ends, andwith central slots to. The slots a are to receive the screw or screws that secure pads adapted for hernia, and in form substantially as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, and the central slots are to provide for the attachment of umbilical pads, which are usually hemispherical. In addition to these. ertical slots, the truss-plate has either slots, s shown at b, or hooks, as shown at c, to rec ve the hook of or engage the openingin e fasteningplate. The pad B is preferaj y perforated where it bears against the perso as at f; and its back is provided with slots out at right angles with slots in the truss-pl te when the two are in position. Under ese slots is placed a supporting-piece, d, fo the head of the bolt 4, the screw-shank of hich passes through the slot in the pad, an also through the vertical slot of the truss-p te from the ribbed side, and When'in such 1 osition and properly adjusted thepad is con ed by means of a thumb-nut, e, which is t rned on said screw and against a washer that a ears against the back of the truss-plate. Th plateA when provided with the slots, as scribed and shown, admits of its being use hernia truss or for right or left nd, and an umbilical truss; or Without pa used as a supporter. The fast ment consists of a frame, G, of provided with buckle-like ton turn on the frame, and with a 4 and 5, or its equivalent, (a Fig. 8. The tongues turn on th of these fastenings are usually truss-plate, and the buckle-like ongues con fine and hold the strap, which i passed about the body, and the end of the trap that is passed between the thighs. Th back end of the last-mentioned strap is prefer bly provided with a hook, I, (see Fig. 10,) an this hook is uitable form, es H, which ok, 1), Figs. opening, 0,) frame. Two ed with each engaged with an opening in a pi cc of leather,
i, or other material, secured to r e outside of the. strap J which passes ab t the body. The fastening, when provided wi c a hook, as at b, is engaged with the truss-pla through the openings 1) made in the truss-p1 e, or a plate attached to such truss-plate, (1 when the fastening is provided with the u ening, as at c, Fig. 8, then a hook, c, is to be ecured to or made to project from the back f the plate. The fastening-plate may be p vided with projections g to bear against th trussplate, in order to provide for additi al leverage and press the pad closely to th person, and also to assist in preventing t I truss-plate from being overturned.
I do not desire to confine myself to bucklelike tongues of the form shown, as any other well-known tongues may be employed instead. Nor do I wish to limit myself to the particular shape of hook or opening, as other shapes may be used.
By means of this fastening the truss-pad may be quickly fitted to the person, and be readily removed. The slots a at the center of the truss-plate might be of other shape than that shown, and one slot or opening might be sufficient for securing the umbilical pad.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A truss-plate provided with the series of central and end openings, substantially as described, to provide for the attachment of pads, as set forth.
2. The corrugated truss-plate provided with the long vertical openings at its ends for attachment of a pad or pads.
3. The combination, with the trussplate provided with the vertical end and central slots, of the pad provided with the transverse slots and with a screw-connecting device, substantially as described.
4. A det achable truss-fastenin g attachment, composed of a plate or frame provided with buckle-like tongues for confining the straps, and with a hook or equivalent to engage the truss-plate, substantially as described.
5. A detachable truss-fastenin g attachment composed of a plate or frame provided with buckle-like tongues and with a hook or equivalent to en gage with the truss-plate, and with a projection at the back of the frame to bear against the other side of the truss-plate, for the purpose described.
GEO. WILSON GREGORY.
