PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES KAUSEN, OF PASADENA, CALIFORNIA.
FILE-HOLDER.
- Application filed November 12, 1920.
T 0 all w 710% it may concern Be it known that 1, CHARLES KAUsnN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pasadena, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in File-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to file holders, especially designed for holding files for use in sharpening the knives of cutting machines or devices of various kinds, such as paper cutters, lawn mowers, scythes, and scissors, one object of the invention being to provide a device of this character which can be readily and conveniently used for sharpening purposes, and which can also be employed without the necessity of removing the knife from the machine.
A further object of the invention is to provide a file holder adapted for detachably receiving and holding files of different sizes for use as required, and which is adapted to be mounted for guiding engagement with a support allowing the file holder to be reciprocated and manipulated as required in the sharpening operation.
The invention consists of the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, hereinafter fully described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating the mode of use of the device.
Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section through the device.
Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the same.
Tn carrying my invention into practice, I provide a file holder comprising a bar hav ing central or body portion 1 and terminal end portions or handles 2 and 3, arranged in longitudinal alinement with each other. The handles 2 and 3 are, as shown, suitably shaped for the purpose, and said handles are respectively formed with longitudinal slots 1 and 5.
The body portion 1 is provided on its underside with a centrally and transversely disposed boss 6 formed at one side to provide a recess 7 and retaining flange 8 and formed at its opposite side to provide a straight abutment or stop shoulder 9. The recess 7 is designed to receive one of the longitudinal edges of a flat sharpening file 10, which is extended in use transversely of or at right angles to the plane of the bar. The boss 6 accordingly serves as a fixed jaw against Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 423,624.
which one longitudinal edge of the file blade 1s adapted to be clamped, said edge being received in the recess 7 and retained from displacement by the flange 8, while the other longitudinal edge of the blade 10 is adapted 'to be engaged by a jaw 11 upon an adjustable clamping member 12. The said clampmg member 12 is arranged beneath the handle 2 and is shaped similarly thereto, so that 30th of said parts 2 and 12 will. be conveniently gripped by one hand of the operator 1n manipulating the tool. The jaw 11 has an end portion 13 to engage the edge of the file blade 10 and the flange 14 to engage under the file blade and cooperating with the flange 8 to hold said file blade against displacement between the opposing faces of the jaws. The adjustable clamping member is provided with a longitudinal slot 15 registeringwith the longitudinal slot 4 in the handle 2, and a suitable fastening device is provided for passage through said slots to hold said parts in proper relationship and to fix the part 12 in adjusted position. The fastening shown for such purpose in the present instance comprises a bolt 16 provided with a wing nut 17 whereby the part 12 may be held upon the part 2 and fixed securely in adjusted position.
Arranged beneath the handle 3 is a guide member 18 arranged to conform generally to the shape of the handle 3 so that said parts can be jointly gripped in the other hand of the operator in manipulating the tool. The member 18 is adapted to abut at its inner end against the stop shoulder 9 to limit the inward movement of said member. and said member has its inner end thickened to form a guide lug 19 provided in its underside with an open recess 20 of semicircular or other suitable form to receive a guide rod 2.1, whereby the device may be slidably mounted upon said guide rod. The member 18 is provided with a longitudinal slot 22 registering with the slot 5 in the handle 3, and a bolt 28 provided with a wing nut 24? extends through said slots and adjustably clonnects the guide member with the hancle 3.
In the use of the device for sharpening the cutting edge 24 of a cutting blade 25, a file blade 10 of any desired length and width is fitted and clamped between the jaws of the tool, and the guide rod 21 suitably mounted or supported in parallel relation to the edge of the blade to be sharpened. This guide rod in practice may constitute a part of the frame work of the machine on which the blade is mounted, in which case the blade and guide rods are relatively adjusted until they are in parallel relationship, as shown in Fig. 1. The tool is then disposed trans versely of the blade and rod so that the file blade will bear upon the edge 24 and the recessed guide lug 19 rests upon the rod 21, the tool thus belng supported in working relationship so that the operator may grip the handles 2 and 3 and reciprocate the file back and forth along the edge 2a to sharpen the latter. The construction described not only provides for an accurate movement of the file in a straight path, but also permits of any proper manipulations of the holder for a straight or beveled cut or to suit any conditions which may arise in effectingthe proper sharpening of the cutting edge 24. It will be observed that the construction not only provides for the use of files of different V widths but that the adjustability of the member l8 provides for a variation'of the distance between the file blade and the guide lug 19 to compensate for any variatlon in thedistance between the cutting blade and the guide rod 21.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim:
l. A file holder comprising abar having a fixed jaw and terminal handles, and adustable members on said bar, one having a jaw" for cooperationwith said fixed jaw to clamp a file between them and the other having a guide member'whereby the holder may be mounted to reciprocate on a suitable support. j, r
2. A. file holder comprising a bar having a fixed jaw and terminal handles, and ad justable members on said bar, one having a jawforcooperation with said fixed jaw to clamp a file between them and the other having a guide member formed with a recess whereby the holder may be mounted to reciprocate on a suitable support.
.3. A file holder comprising a bar having a body portion and terminal handle portions, said body portion being provided wit a fixed jaw, and members connected forlongitudinal adjustment with said handle portions, one of said members havin a jaw for cooperation with said fixed jaw to clamp a file between them and the other of said members having a guide element whereby the holder may be mounted to reciprocate on a suitable support. 7
4. A fle holder comprising a bar, a fixed jaw portion on said bar, a movable jaw member adjustable toward and away from one side of said fixed jaw portion, means for holding said movable jaw member in adjusted positionsfa guide element movable toward and away from the opposite side of said jaw inember, and means for holding said guide element in adjustedposition.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
