To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NATE Moon a citizen of the United States of America, and residing at 11, Holborn, London, E. C. 1, England. Great Britain, have invented new and useful Improvements in or Relating to Stamp-inking Pads, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention has reference to a stamp inking pad, the fundamental idea of which is to so insert the pad in its box that upon the stamp striking against the mo able cover of said box the pad will be exposed whereupon the stamp can slide over the surface of the inking pad. Upon removing the stamp, the box or casing encircling the pad, will again close automatically.
In one especially effective constructional form of the invention the inking pad, combined with the cover is mounted rotatably in the casing in suchwise that upon striking it with the stamp it is brought out of the closed position with the cover uppermost into a position in which the stamp can pass over the flat surface of the pad.
A further feature of the invention comprises means whereby the stamp inking pad may be retained in its open or operative position.
A constructional embodiment of the invention is shown on the drawings, where Figure 1 shows it closed, in plan view, Fig. 2 a front view of the device in the closed position, and Fig. 3' represents the same in the position ready for use. Figs. d and 5 show one method of retaining the device'in its open position.
As here illustrated the pad a is connected to a roller like cover 5, in suchwise that an enveloping cylindrical surface results which is interrupted by a smooth surface formed by the face of the inking pad.
This lid shaped portion is provided with pivots c, by means of which it is so mounted in the casing (Z that it can be swung around the said pivots.
At one of the longitudinal sides it is provided with a stop 6. The lid shaped portion is so arranged that it tends to take up the closed position automatically as represented in Figs. 1 and 2 This can be effected Specification of Letters Patent.

either by arranging the pivots 0 eccentrically, or by means of a spring or weight mechanism. To use the device the stamp 7' is brought against the stop I) so as to cause the lid portion a, b, to swing around the pivots c and turn into the casing in the direction of the arrow as so that the flat surface of the stamp pad a is exposed. Over this surface the stamp passes in the direction of the arrow y and thus inks its surface. As soon as it is removed the lid portion swings automatically in a direction opposite to that of the arrow so again assuming the closed position.
In some cases it may be advantageous to provide the stamp inking pad device with means whereby it is possible to retain the pad in its open or operative position, and one way in which this can be effected is shown by Figs. 4: and 5 of the drawings whereon the stop b has secured to onset its surfaces by way of soldering or like means a pin or spur g. The casing d has attached to it a dog it fashioned with a jaw i which engages the pin or spur g. The dog has secured thereon a weight j and secured to the casing d is a pin is for limiting the swinging movement of the dog. In the normal or inoperative position the dog it rests against the bearing for the pivot 0 as shown in Fig. 5. Having thus described my invention what I desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is as follows 1.
