Description

w. G. K|NG. Molasses Pitchers.
Patented May 6,1873.
AM PHDTO'l/THOGRAPHIC CO. MYWSBDRNEJS I-"ROCESSZ UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAMO. KING, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN MOLASSES-PITCHERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 138,501, dated May 6, 1873; application filed April 8, 18 73. A
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM 0. KING, of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Top for Molasses-Pitchers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in providing the top of a molasses-pitcher with a device for carrying back into the pitcher the drip remaining on the point of the lip of the top after the operation of pouring out the molasses.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe more fully its construction and operation.
In the accompanying drawing,'which forms part of my specification, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a molasses-pitcher provided with my improvement in top for the same. Fig. 2 isa vertical section of the same.
A is the pitcher. B is its top, which is, in the present case, constructed in the ordinary form, but is provided with a pivoted shield, O, for the lip f. This shield has its axis at g, and is provided with a spring for holding the shield up in juxtaposition with the lip f. ()n the inner side of the shield is a projection, c,
which is used for wiping upward the drip re maining on the lip f after pouring out the molasses, the drip being carried upward by the projection c to a point which will allow it to run ofi the projection c into the pitcher A.
In Fig. 2 of the accompanying drawing the relation of the projection e of the shield O to lip f is clearly shown, and it will readily be observed that the projection e, in passing upward past the point of the lip f, will wipe oif and carry upward the drip of molasses to a point where it will flow back into the pitcher.
Prior to pouring out the molasses the front end of the shield is depressed by pressing upward the point x of the shield. The lid is only ruised for filling the pitcher.
The main and essential feature of my invention consists in a device for wiping the drip oi the pouring-lip of the pitcher, and carrying it to a point where it will flow back into the pitcher.
Having thus described the nature, construction, and operation of my improvement,
what I claim as of my invention is The pouring-lip of a pitcher, provided with a pivoted shield having an inward projection, which will wipe off the drip and carry it back into the pitcher, substantially as herein described.
Witnesses: WM. 0.. KING.
