Description

B. ELISBERG AND W. SHEFF. FALSE TEETH ATTACHMENT. APPLICATION FILED AUG-24, 1920.

, WITNESSES INVENTOBB Emu/w fZ/SBEPG W/ u. MN SHEFF A TTOR/VEYS UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BENJAMIN ELISBERG, OF NEW YORK, AND WILLIAM SHEFF, 0F BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
FALSE-TEETH ATTACHMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 12, 1921.
Application filed August 24, 1920. Serial No. 405,569.
To all whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that we, BENJAMIN ELIsBnRc and lVILL AM SHEEF, both citizens of the United States, and residents of the city of New York, borough of Bronx, county 0 Bronx, and borough of Brooklyn, Kings, respectively, in the State of New York, have invented a new and im roved False-Teeth Attachment, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to false teeth, and has reference more particularly to an attachment adapted to secure false teeth in the mouth of the wearer.
As is commonly practised, the plate holding the false teeth is provided with a soft rubber suction cup which is adapted to engage the roof of the mouth so as to maintain the false teeth in position. However, this method of fastening is uncertain, and as a result when a person sneezes or coughs, it frequently happens that the false teeth will break loose from the fastening, and be thrown from the mouth. 7
An object of this invention, therefore, is to provide a means of securing false teeth to the wearer which will prevent the false teeth from falling out when a person sneezes or coughs.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which ltllS understood that the drawing illustrates only one form of the invention, and in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a set of false teeth with our improved fastening means in position. i V
Fig. 2 is a central sectional view of the false teeth 1n position in a persons mouth.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view on a large scale through the fasteningdevice on the line 33 ofFig. 1. r
Fig. 4 is atop view on a large scale of the fastening device. H
Referring to the accompanying drawing by numerals, 1O indicates'the plate of a set of false teeth around the edge of which are secured by any suitable means, false teeth 11. Our improved fastening device for securing the plate 10 to the roof 12 of a persons mouth consists in a hinge leaf 13; embedded in the upper edges 14 of the platelO, said hinge county of leaf being connected to a second hinge leaf 15 by a hinge pin 16. A coil spring 17 embraces the hinge pin 16 and normally tends to press the hinge leaf 15 inwardly toward f the gums 18 in a persons mouth. A pad 19 of any soft material such as rubber, cork, etc., is secured to the hinge leaf 15 by offset fingers 20 which extend into the pad 19. The
' pads 19 prevent pain in the gums 18 due to the pressure of the spring 17 The outside surface of the edges 14; of the plate 10 are preferably smooth and conform to the shape of the hinge leaf 15 so that the persons cheek 21 is not injured by contact with our fastening device. It is understood that instead of the hinged fastening device, we might substitute a flexible member which would serve the same purpose. I
We would state in conclusion that while the illustrated example constitutes a practical embodiment of our invention, we do not limit ourselves strictly to the mechanical details herein illustrated, since manifestly the same can be considerably varied without departure from the spirit of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. In a device of the character described, the combination with a dental plate, of means carried thereby for maintaining the plate in position in the mouth of the wearer, comprising elements hinged to the opposite sides of said plate and means for normally effecting the movement of said elements toward each other to cause the same to engage and grip the gums.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination with a plate supporting false teeth, of a pair of pivotally connected hinge leaves,'one of said hinge leaves being secured to the edges of said plate, a pad secured to the other of said leaves adapted to engage a BENJAMIN nL IsBERe."
