Description

w. 1. FARRELL;
RADIATOR.
APPLICATION FILED NOV. 15, 1919.

I I (Juan/4W0; wwwcooeo x PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM J. FARRELL, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
RADIATOR.
Specification of Letters Patent. 7 Patent d J l 12 1921 Application filed November 15, 1919. Serial No. 338,276.
T all whom it may concern Be it known that I/VIL IAM J. FARRELL, citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Radiators, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to heating radiators such as are commonly employed in conjunction with steam or hot water heating plants and its object is to provide an improved type of radiator constructed in such manner as to prevent the objectionable water hammer that so frequently occurs in radiators of ordinary construction.
In pursuance of the foregoing object I contemplate providing a radiator made up of a plurality of sections, each of which is shorter than the section preceding it and wherein the outlet opening upon one side of each section adjacent the bottom is at a higher level than the opening upon the other side of said section adjacent the bottom, whereby a radiator is provided that may be manufactured with marked economy, may be easily and quickly assembled but wherein such eflicient drainage of the water of condensation therefrom may be had as will effectually prevent water hammer.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part hereof and wherein like reference characters designate corresponding parts in both of the figures:
Figure 1 is a view partly in side elevation and partly in vertical section of a radiator constructed in accordance with the invention; and
Fig. 2 is a side view of one of the sections of the radiator.
It will be observed that the radiator is made up of a plurality of sections 5, each of the intermediate sections being longer than the next section'upon one sideand shorter than the next section upon the other side. 4
When used in conjunction with a two pipe steam heating system, an inlet pipe 6 will be tapped into one of the end sections 5 and an outlet pipe 7 will be tapped into the other end section 5 but the radiator is just as well adapted to serve as an element of a one plpe system in which case the connection to the system will be through pipe 7 and pipe 6 will be omitted. Each of the intermediate radiator sections 5 has openings 8 and 8 formed in its sides adjacent the bottom, the openings 8 being above the level of the outlets or openings 8. Any suitable means may be employed for connecting the radiator sections, such as the well known push nipples 9, or ordinary threaded nipples may be used in lieu thereof.
It is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the precise construction set forth but that changes therein may be made without departure from the spirit of the invention. For example, while I have illustrated the fall as being considerable in order to emphasize the novel features of the invention it is to be understood that the degree of fall may be varied at will.
Having described my invention, what I claim is A radiator comprising a plurality of vertically disposed sections, with the upper ends of said sections substantially parallel, each of the sections being provided with an opening formed at the lower end and in each of its sides, the opening in one side of each section being at a higher level than the opening in the other side thereof, the higher opening of one section being positioned to register with the lower opening of an adj acent section, thereby providing in the bot tom of the radiator a stepped drain way, allowing the water to reach its lowest level and be carried off, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof the foregoing specification is signed.
WILLIAM J. FARRELL.
