Description

I. P. BUTTS.
GAS BURNER.
APPLICATION FILED OCT. I4, I9I9.
Patented July 12, 1921.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GAS-BURNER.
Application filed October 14, 1919.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOSEPH P. BU'r'rs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baxter Springs, in the county of Cherokee and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gas- Burners, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to gas burners designed more particularly for use in connection with furnaces, kilns and in the industrial arts generally where intense heat is required for any purpose, such as the smelting of ore, the reducing of metal to a molten state and for other purposes.
The invention provides a burner which will insure a thorough mixture of air with the gas with the result of obtaining a flame of perfect combustion and which may be controlled as required.
The drawings illustrate a preferred embodiment of the invention. However, it is to be understood that in adapting the same to meet different conditions, various changes in the form, proportion and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the nature of the invention as claimed hereinafter.
In the drawings hereto attached Figure 1 is a view in elevation of a burner embodying the invention, the mixing chamber being in longitudinal section and the burner tube in full lines and having a portion of the tip broken away.
Fig. 2 is a section of the line 22 of Fig. 1, looking to the left as designated by the arrow.
Fig. 3 is a transverse section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1, looking to the left as indicated by the arrow.
Fig. 4 is a cross section on the line fr-4: of Fig. 1 looking to the right as shown by the arrow.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in the several views of the drawings by like reference characters.
The burner comprises a tube 1 and a casing or mixing chamber 2. The burner tube 1 connects with a suitable source of gas sup ply and is provided with a removable tip 3 which is approximately of conical form and has its front wall provided with a plurality of openings 4; which constitute outlets for the gas. The mixing chamber 2 consists of a casing which surrounds the delivery por- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 12, 1921.
Serial No. 330,600. I
tion of the burner tube 1. The end portion of the casing or mixing chamber corresponding with the flame outlet projects some distance in advance of the burner tip 4 and receives a fan 5 which is mounted upon a stem 6 supported in the front wall of the burner tip 3. The stem'6 is threaded and passes through an opening in the center of the front wall of the burner tip 3 and receives a pair of nuts 7 between which the front wall of the burner tip is clamped. In this manner the stem 6 may be adjusted or detachably connected with the burner tip so that the fan 5 may be replaced when required. The fan 5 may be of any construction and is adapted to be automatically operated by the draft through the mixing chamber and the force of the discharge of the gas through the outlets 4 of the burner tip. The purpose of the fan is to insure a thorough mixing of the air and gas which is essential to thorough consumption of the gas in order to obtain the best results.
The mixing chamber 2 consists of a casing which receives the forward portion of the burner 2, the latter being disposed centrally therein. The front end of the mixing chamber is open and the rear end is closed by means of a pair of doors 8 which are mounted to swing laterally. A lug 9 projects vertically from the rear portion of the casing 2 and the doors 8 are pivotally connected thereto by suitable fastenings 10. The meeting edges of the doors are notched to receive the burner tube as indicated at 11. By opening the doors more or less the admission of air may be regulated.
In the operation of the burner, gas is forced through the burner 2 and escapes in jets through the outlets 4. The force of these jets is such as to create a suction through the chamber 2 thereby drawing air into the chamber. The fan 5 is set in motion by the draft through the chamber 2 and the jets escaping through the outlets 4:. Rotation of the fan causes its blades to act as beaters whereby the air and gas are thoroughly combined so as to produce a homogeneous mixture which will burn with an intense flame and perfect combustion.
The foregoing description and accompanying drawings have reference to what might be considered to be the approved or preferred form of my invention. I desire it to be understood that I may make such changes in the construction, combination.
15 forth, a burner tube, a mixing chamber reand arrangement of parts, material's, dimensions, et cetera, as may prove expedient and fall Within the scope of the invention as claimed.
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a gas burner comprising a burner ceiving the burner tube, a fan disposed in the mixing chamber in advance of the burner tube and its tip, and said fan being adjustable longitudinally of said chamber in advance of the burner tube.
3. In a burner, a burner tube provided with a tip having a forward apertured wall, a mixing chamber surrounding the burner tube, a stem having one end threaded and extended through said wall whereby the stem may be adjusted longitudinally of the V chamber, and a fan mounted upon the opposite end of said stem in advance of said tip.
In testimony whereof Iafiix my signature in presence of two witnesses. r
. JOSEPH P. BUTTS.
