To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that We, JAMEs H. Sco'rr and JOHN D. WHrrooMB, citizens of the United States, residing at Long Beach, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Invalid-Exercisers and Baby- WValkers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to invalid exercisers and baby walkers of the type comprising a supporting carrier for the invalidor baby which is arranged to be revolved around a supporting standard.
It is the object of the invention to provide an improved supporting carrier for the invalid or baby and also to provide improved supporting connections between the carrier and'the standard around'lwhich the carrier is revolved.
The invention will be readily understood from the following description of the accompanying drawings, in -which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the invention.
Fig. 2 is a transverse section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section on the line line 44 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the supporting carrier.
Fig. 6 is a longitudinal section through one of the bearings for the supporting standard.
The supporting standard for the device comprises an upright 1 rotatably supported at its respective ends as in ball bearings 2. The ball bearing at the upper end of the standard may be arranged in a disk 2' to which is secured guy wires 3', and the bearing at the lower end of the standard may be provided in a block 3 resting upon the floor.
A substantially horizontal rod 4 projects radially from the supporting standard and may be fixed for rotation therewith and for slight pivotal movement up and down relative to the supporting standard as by a collar 5 fixed upon the standard and having the rod 4 pivoted thereto as shown at 6. Adjustable braces 7 and 8 extend from the outer end of the rod 4 to the upper and lower ends of the supporting standard respectively.
The brace 7 is shown as comprising a rod 1920. Serial No. 382,728.
portion provided with a turnbuckle 9 and plvotally connected to the rod 4 as by a collar 10 fixed upon said rod and having the plvotal connection 11 with the rod portion of the brace. The rod portion of the brace, preferably, telescopes within a sleeve 12 having pivotal connection 13 with a collar 14 fixed upon the supporting standard ad- 121061113 its upper end. A spring 15 surrounds the rod comprising the brace within the sleeve 12, this spring being held upon the rod by a nut 16 at the upper end of the latter and by a closure cap 17 threaded over the end of sleeve 12 and through which the rod extends. By this arrangement the lengthof the supporting brace maybe adjusted by means of the turnbuckle, and the supporting brace thus formed will provide a resilient support for the rod 4.
The brace 8 is shown as comprisinga rod Specification of Letters Patent. Patgntgd J l 12 1921 portion pivoted at 18 to a collar 19 fixed upon the rod 4 and telescoping atits opposite end within a sleeve 20 pivoted at 21 to a collar 22 fixed upon the supporting upright adjacent its lower end. A spring 23 is interposed between the end of the rod portion of the brace and the base of sleeve 20 to provide a resilient brace for the rod 4.
The supporting carrier of the device is carried at the outer end of rod 4 and, preferably, comprises an annulus 25 formed in sections pivoted together at 26 and having a pin and recess latching connection 27 at the meeting ends of the pivoted sections of the annulus. A retaining pin 28 is, preferably, arranged to be inserted through the latching connection 27 for detachably retaining the annulus in closed position. This annulus is supported in a substantially horizontal plane by the connection 29 between the latter and the rod 4.
A saddle 3O depends from the annulus 25 and a back rest 31 projects above the same. As an instance of this arrangement a coupling 32 may be secured upon the annulus having an upwardly extending supportlng rod 33 to which the back rest is secured and a downwardly extending supporting rod 34 to which the saddle is secured. The saddle is, preferably, spring mounted upon the supporting rod 20 in any well known manner shown as including the springs 35. Arm rests 36 may be mounted upon the sides of the annulus 25 as by detachable clamping connections 37.
When in use the invalid or baby straddles the saddle and the annulus is closed around the waist of the one using the device. In this position the'back rest '31 isso'arranged relative to the saddle as to provide a comfortable support for the back, and the arm rests 36 are so positioned as to provide supporting means for the arms" of the person. The weight of the person using the device will then be supported by the rod 4 which,aspreviously described, is arranged to yield slightly up and down relative to the supporting standard, the rod 4: being resiliently supported by the braces 7 and 8.
It will be understood that the construc- :tion as thus described ma be made in various sizes so as to accommodate either a grown person, or a ChllCl, or an infant; and
itwill be observed that the device thus provided forms a simplified construction of a resiliently mounted supporting carrier arranged to'be' revolved around a supporting upright.
The invention also provides a device which maybe quickly placed in operative position or taken down and stored away when it '1 isnot desired to use the same- When the device is to be'taken down the'play: in
