AUTO-SIGNAL.
.1 the intended movement of the ear. I have also sought to provide a construction which may serve as asignal by day as well as by night. I have also sought to construct the apparatus so that a single light will serve as a, rear light and alsoilluminate the direction signals aswell as the number or license plate.
Figure 1 illustrates the apparatus diagrammatically Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the signal apparatus per so;
Fig. 3 is a side view and partial section,
showing a fragment of the signal device and also showlng an operating handle:
Fig. 4; is a horizontal section and plan of the same;
Fig. 5 is an end view of the mechanism for operating the signal hands.
F ig. 6 is a fragmentary side view showing a modified operating mechanism.
The box or casing 6 is preferably divided into two parts by a partition 7. A lamp 8 of any suitable type is mounted in the rear compartment in line with the red lens 9, and above and in rear of the license or number plate 10. An opening 11 is provided in the bottom of the compartment, so that the light from the lampcan shine upon the number late. p On the top of the box is hinged a hand 12 which, in the traveling position, lies flat against the top of the box, covering the opening 13. This hand 12 may have on its lower surface the word Stop or similar direction signal, which is adapted to be displayed when the hand is raised, as shown 1n the dot and dash lines of Fig. 2. At night the light from the lamp may shine through the opening 13 and iluminate this hand and direction signal. At one or both sides of the boX- is mounted a hand, such as 14, preferably hinged and normally covering the opening, such as 15, through which light may shine to illuminate it "and also any direction device that may be on the back of the hand Application filed January 24, 1921. Serial No. 439,534.
when the hand isextended. The signal box may be mounted in any convenient place on the car and operated in various ways. It is preferably mounted at the rear so as to pro vide a rear light and also illuminate thev license plate.
In the form shown in Figs. 1 to 4incluprovided for manual operation,
sive, I have as will be hereinafter understood. Each of the indicating hands is operated in substanti'ally the same-manner, and it will therefore be necessary to describe only one connection. For convenience I will describe the connection for the righthand indicating member 16. Extending inwardly from the pivot or hinge of the hand is an arm 17, rigidly connected with the hand and connected to the lever 18 by a pin and slot 19. The lever 18 is provided with a spring 20. 'about'its pivot, which spring 20 normally tends to keep the hand 16 in itsclosed or non-indicating position. Preferably the link connections are such that the hand cannot be swung from the outside. To operate the lever 18 I provide a plunger 21, having a finger 22 adapted to engage the short end 23 of the lever when the plunger is pulled forwardly. A spring 24 tends to keep'the plunger 21 in the rearward position, as shown in Fig. 4:. By pulling the plunger 21 forwardly in any suitable manner the finger 22 engagesthe short arm 23 of the lever and moves it to the dot and dash position so as to swing'the hand 16 outwardly and indicate that the car is about to turn to the right. To operate the plunger 21 I provide a handle'25 and a connecting link or shaft 26 which, if necessary, may be of the jointed universal type. The rod 27 of spring 30. The rear end of the handle is provided with a cam-like shoulder 31, adapted to co-act with the outer end of the support 28. When the handle 25 is rocked on its pivot 29, the cam 31 rides over the end of the support 28 and pulls the rod 27 and connection 26 forwardly, so that the finger 22 will engage the arm 23 and operate the hand 16. The end of the handle and the support 28 are so constructed that the handle will remain in this position, with the hand 16 extended, until the handle 25 is turned down, so as to release the rod 27 and the connection 26 and permit the spring 20 to return the Specification of Letters Patent. Patantedl July 12, 1921. i
nested to I mounted. on. brackets 33 where desired, so
asi to support the shaft with a minimum of; friction and at the same time permit the shaft to move at an angle. v v
Instead of having a single operating handle, as f in the from shown, it shouldbe understood that ,I contemplate. the provision of separate operating devices, such aspulls or. pedals, for each signal hand. In the form shqwn. in Fig.5, 25" is.con-, necteduby a wireor chain 26. t0 the. short arm.23- oi anqoperatinglever. A lever 27, maybe interposed between .the Wire 26;",
provided for holding the parts i in the nor, mal position ot rest, It should be understood that other changes may be .made in the construction, ,without departing from the splrltor-scope of my mvention.
It will be seen, from the foregoing that at nightlbut a single lamp is required to. tune nish the ordinaryrear lightandto illuminate any one ofthe signals, as well as the number or, license plate.
otcourse, thalamp 1s notneeded but the license plate is displayedgto the rear and the signals areadaptedtobezoperated when.
necessary,
It will be.,understood, of course, that I do not. to belimitedto the use of a singlelamp fonilluminating all of the-signals or toasingle lamp to serve as a rear light.
