Be it known that L, ARTHUR E. Rrnnou'r, a citizen of the United States, and a resident or Chicaoo, in Cook county, State of lllinois, have invented an improvement in Strip-Serving Devices, of which the following` description, in connection with the'accompanying drawings, is a specilication, like letters on the drawings representing like parts. Y
The present invention relates to strip serving devices designed to meisten, cut and deliver strips or' adhesive tape for use in connection Vwith sealin` packages and the like. rl`he object ot the invention is to provide an apparatus wherein. the tape may be held against or away from the moistener at the will ot' the operator and independently of the draft on the tape.
(lne embodiment of the improvements constituting my invention is illustrated in the accompanyingdrawings in which,
Figure l is a side elevation and Fig. 2 is a view partly in section on line 2-2 oi' Fig. l.
lt will be understood that the present invention Vhas te do with devices tor delivering` strips of adhesive tape, comprisinna suigiport :for a supply of tape, moistening` means either to meisten tape already gummed or to apply adhesive paste to ungummed tape, means for guiding the free end of the tape and suitable severing' means lor cutting ofi strips ot desired length. Referring to Fig: l ol' the drawings, a tape support .l is mounted upon a suitable base 2. i/"idjacent thereto is located a receptacle 3 for holding water or paste and in which a moistener l rotates when a strip o'l tape i8 is drawn across its exposed surlace. lllhen the tape has been properly moistened, the strip is severed by means comprising a suitably mounted Afixed blade 5 and a movable blade 6 positioned to cooperate with the fixed blade. lt is not es sential that there be two blades because th strip may be severed as well merely by defleeting it against either the lined blade or the movable blade in case only one is used.
ln order that the free end of the tape may be held away from the moistener when the device is not in use, l have provided a movaole tape guiding member comprising a suitable frame l2, guide rollers and 8 to eny te the dry strip, and guide rollers 9 and ll) to engage the strip aflter it passes the S eci'ication of Letters Patent.
Patented July l2, illil.
Renewed ctober 30, 1920. Serial No. 426,853. moistening roller. Between these two sets of rollers, l also provide a presser roller ll adapted to press the tape positively against the moistening roller el when the entire guiding member' is deflected downwardly toward the rnoistening` roller. ln order that tape through normally out o1 contact with the nioistening roller, may be readily pressed. downwardly against the moistener at the will ot the operator l mount the frame l2 of the guiding member upon suitable springt cushioned rods 13 which retain the guiding` member' in normal position. When it is deisired to meisten a strip of tape, the operator may depress the guiding member. until the presser roller presses the tape against the moistening roller, simply by pressing with his foot upon a treafll e lllwhich in turn connects with the spring,i supported rods by means ot a connecting rod l5 and a plate 16 to which the vsaid rod is pivoted and which also serves as a base plate t0 connect the several supporting` rods. When the guiding member is thus depressed, the operator may take hold ot the free end of the tape which normally rests behind the severing` means 5, and draw out a strip to the` de sired length. ln so doing, he may subject it to any desired pressure in its passage across the moistening roller, thus insuringY the .proper degree ot moistening` to secure thorough impregnation of the gum on the tape, in case it has previously been gummed. When a suliicient length orf tape has been drawn out, it may be detached by releasing pressure upon the treadle irl, .ausing the guiding' member to return to its normal position and at the same time bringing the movable knife G into operative relation with the fixed knife to sever the strip which intervenes. lt will be understood that the presser roller ll and the guidingrollers 9 and l0 between which the tape passes atter it has been moistened are torino-d wit i peripheral projections l? in the latter case so that the adhesive tape will not have a substantial surface upon which to stick when a machine is not in operation and in the former, se that moisture may not reach the ungummed side et.' the tape. lt is obvious that liXed froide bars might be substituted Vfor the guide rollers and 8 and that various other parts may be replaced by equivalents without `departing from the spirit of the invention which lies in` providing in oi' draft on the tape.
I claim as my invention- 1. A device for serving adhesive strips of tapeV comprising in combination, a support for a supply of tape, means for moistening the tapeV to render it adhesive, a yielding` support having guide rollers for tlie'iiree'end of vthe tape, and severing` means, comprising,`
Va fixed blade and a blade mounted on the yielding support and adapted to coact with the Xed blade to sever a strip or' tape at the will of tlie operator. 2. Audevice for serving adhesive strips of tape comprising in combinationV a support for a supply 'of tape, means for inoistening the tape to renderit adhesive, a frame baving:` strip guidingmeans and a strip presser interposed between said guiding means, and means for moving said guiding means and said presser .toward tlie moistening` means. 3. A device for 'serving adhesive strips of tape comprising in combination a sup-` port for a supply ot tape, means for meistening the tape to render it adhesive, a frame having strip guiding, rollers and a vstrippressing roller interposed between'said ,guiding rollers, and means for moving said guiding` rollers and tbe pressing rollerv simultaneously toward the moistening means.
4f. A device l'or serving` adhesive strips of tape comprising, in combination, a. support for a supply or' tape,
the tape to render it adhesive, a yielding support having guide rollers for the :tree end of the tape, apresser mounted ing support and adaptedpwlien moved in one direction to press the tape into moisturereceiving` position, and severing means, comprising,` a fixed blade and a blade mounted on tlie yielding support and adapted When movedvin one direction to coact with the fixed blade to sever a strip of tape.
vmeans for 'moistening on tlie yieldln testimonyvwbereof, l. have signedk my?" name to this specilication, in the presence oi two subscribing Witnesses. i f j ARTHUR E. RIDEOUT.
