SPACE-BAND.

Application vled September 5, 1919, lSerial No. 321,814. Renewed October 8, 1920. Serial No. 415,676.
To c/,ZZ 'whom it may conce/Mt:
Be it known that l, Cronin L. JOHNSON, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook, State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful lmprovements in Space- Bands, of which the following is a specilication.
This invention relates to space bands used on linotype machines for justifying the line of matrices previous to casting the linotype bar, and has for its object:-
To provide a simple and elicient structural formation and combination of parts whereby a space band of the usual construction now in general use, can be initially and temporarily increased in thickness by the operator as required during the continued actual operation of the linotype machine, all as will hereinafter more fully appear.
ln the accompanying drawing :--y
Figure 1, is a rear. perspective view of a space band embodying the present invention, with the thickening strips in their inactive position.
Fig. 2, is a rear elevation with thethickening strips in the active position.
Fig. 3, is a vertical section on line 3-*3 Fig. 1.
Figs. 1, and 5, are transverse sections on line 4 4 Fig. 1, and line 5-5 Fig. 2, showing the thickening strips in their inactivo and active positions, respectively.
Fig. 6, is an enlarged fragmentary section illustrating the taper form of the bearing edges of the cam slots in the cam plate.
Like reference numerals indicate like parts in the several views.
As represented in the drawing, the space band is of the same general form and structure as the space bands now in use in linotype machines, said band consisting of a supn porting sleeve or body portion 1 and a wedge portion 2 slidingly connected together by interengaging slide formations 8, with the supporting sleeve 1 provided with side ears 4 by which the space band is supported in proper position on the guide slides of the space band box, assembling elevator, etc., of a linotype machine. In connection with such usual construction of a space band the present invention involves a detail formation and association of parts as follows:
5 designates longitudinally extending channels, preferably two in number, formed Specification of Letters Patent.

in parallel relation in the back of the wedge portion 2 of the space band, and adapted to receive the pair of space band thickening strips now to be described.
6 designates the thickening strips above referred to, of the flat and thin form shown in the drawing and adapted in their inactive condition to fit in the channels 5 aforesaid, leaving the space band of a usual and nor-k mal thickness.
7 designates lateral ears on the strips 6 having engagementin transverse guide recesses in the wedge portion 2 and adapted to guide said strips laterally and prevent independent longitudinal movement of the strips in relation to eachother or to the wedge portion 2.
8 designates a cam plate sliding longitudinally in a guide recess in the wedge portion 2 beneath the aforesaid strips 6 and formed with pairs of V shape cam slots 9 for operative engagement with cam legs 10 on the aforesaid strips 6 las shown more particularly in Figs. 2 and 3, In the present construction the cam slots 9 are adapted to move the thickening strips 6 outwardly so that said strips will rest upon the marginal portions of the wedge 2 to provide additional thickness for the same and for the space band when said strips 6 are in the described active position. In order that the strips 6 may move readily out of and into their receiving channels 5 the inner bearing edges of the cam slots 9 have a tapering form, as shown in Fig. 6, adapted to engage over angular ears 11 on the inner ends of the cam lugs 10, so that in the movements of the cam plate 8, positive movement of the strips 6 into and out of the channels 5 will be attained.
12 designates an operating lever pivoted in the wedge portion 2, with one end operatively connected to the cam plate 8 and the other end projecting at the side of the space band for Operative control by the machine operator. v
In actual use a bar common to the series of operating levers 12 is pivotally mounted on the assembly elevator of the machine, and under the control of the operator, so that by a manual shift of said bar the series of levers 12 will be operated to move the thickening strips 6 into their heretofore described active position. The return of the thickening strips 6 to their inactive position will be accomplished by a similar bar mounted 0n the space band transfer channel and adapted for automatic operation by the down stroke of the iirst elevator of the machine.
Having thus fully described my said invention, what l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. In a linotype space band, the combination of a Wedge member formed' with a receiving channel, a thickening strip associated with said channel, and means for shifting said strip from said channel to the back or' the Wedge member.
2. In a linotype space band, the combination of a Wedge member Jformed With a pair of longitudinal receiving channels, thickening strips associated with said channels, means for preventing independent longitudinal movement of said strips, and means for simultaneously shifting said strips from said channels to the back of the Wedge member.
3. In a linotype space band, the combination of a Wedge member formed with a pair of longitudinal receiving channels, thickening strips associated with said channels, lateral ears in said strips having guiding engagement With the Wedge' member, and means for simultaneously shifting said strips from said channels to the back of the Wedge member.
4L. ln a linotype space band, the combination of a Wedge member-formed with a pair of longitudinal receiving channels, thickening strips associated with said channels, means for preventing` independent longitudinal movement or" said strips, and means for simultaneously shifting said strips from said channels to the back of the Wedge member, the same comprising a cam plate formed with V shape cam slots, lugs on the thickening strips engaging said cam slots and a lever having operative engagement with said cam plate.
5. In a linotype space band, the combination of a Wedge member formed with a pair of longitudinal receiving channels, thickening strips associated with said f channels, means for preventing` independent longitudinal movement of said strips, and means for simultaneously shitting said strips from said channels to the back of the Wedge member, the same comprising a cam plate formed with V shape cam slots having tapering bearing edges, angular lugs on the thickening strips engaging said cam slots and a lever having operative engagement With said cam plate.
6. In a linotype space band, the combination of a Wedge member 'formed with a pair of longitudinal receiving channels, thickening strips associated With said channels, vlateral ears on said strips having guiding engagement With the Wedge member, and means for simultaneously shifting said strips from said channels to the back of the Wedge member the same comprising a cam plate formed with V shape cam slots, lugs on the thickening strips engaging said cam slots and a lever having operative engagement with said cam plate.
7. In a linotype space band, the combination of a Wedge member formed With a pair of longitudinal receiving channels, thickening strips associated with said channels, lateral ears on said strips having guiding engagement With the Wedge member, and means for simultaneously shifting said strips from said channels to the back of the Wedge member the same comprising a cam plate formed With V shape cam slots having tapering bearing edges, angular lugs on the thickening strips engaging said cam slots and a lever having operative engagement with said cam plate.
