IVHEIL- DON, a citizen of the Vnitcd States, and a. resident of Ashland. in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Paper-Crinkling Apparatus. ot which thc following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like characters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention relates to thev manufacture of crinkled paper. and the purpose is to provide means for eflccting with certainty a pronounced crinkling or craping.
The invention may best be understood by the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing illustrating diagrammatically a form of paperct'inkling machine having my improvements applied thereto and wherein:
Figure 1 is a longitudinal section; and
Fig. 2 is a broken plan of the craping roll and adjacent parts from the direction of the arrow 2 in Fig. l.
In the drawing I have illustrated a machine which is adapted to crape or crinkle finished paper. the paper web 5 being drawn from a suitable supply roll and passed through a satin-atingr bath 7 which may. it desired, be heated as by the steam pipes 9. The paper passes from the saturing bath under squeeze rolls 11 and lil. overa smoothsurfaced crinkling roll 15 which carries it against the edge of a doctor blade 17. This doctor blade crowds back the wet paper on itself and removes it from the roll 15 in the form of a craped or crinkled web, as shown at the right l'land in the ligure. which web is carried away by a conveyer 19. This4 type of machine as so far described is well known in theart and for further explanation of the principles involved I may refer to the patents to Arkel] Nos. 790.021 and 790.022, dated May 1G, 1905.' v
The crinkling', whether prepared by the wet process as here shown or otherwise, may be most effectively'carried out if the paper web is in close contact with the crinkling Hereinv I have illustrated the use of fluid pressure means for securing close adherence of the .web to the roll 15 until shortly beforefit reaches thev doctor :blade 17 and in particularI-have illustrated both positive and negativeuid pressurefmeans as'utilized together. able blast may be applied to the paper on the roll 15 just before it reaches the doctor blade 17' and I have here' illustrated a pipe 2l extending parallel to thelsurtace of th.v roll and having a port through which air may be blown against the paper to hold it down on the roll, the air being supplied by a suitable blower` 25. The pipe is preferal'ily supported to swing about an axis alined with the axis of the roll as best shown in Fig. 2 so that it may be adjusted to desired angular position' thereabout and a slip joint 27 may be provided to permit adjustment of the pipe relative to the surface of the roll itself. To facilitate the adherence of the paper to the roll 15 I preferably provide Suitable shallow grooves 29 in the surface of the latter permitting air to escape from beneath the paper ,so that the latter may be pressed closely into contact with the roll. I have herein shown these grooves as circumferentiahf. Further to providefor such escape the craping roll 15 may be hollow and may be provided with perforations 31, preferably at the bottom of the grooves, to permit air to escape from beneath thel paper through thev interior of the roll.
vIn the present example of the-invention I also utilize thesel perforations 31 for sucking the air from beneath the paper sothat 85 it is held to the craping roll both by pressure from the blast pipe 21 and by suction. This suction is applied through a suitable restricted zone adjacent the doctor blade 1.7 and opposite the blast pipe 21 and I have herein shown a substantially wedge shaped air box 35 having an open base presented to of the hollow roll 1'5 and thereforeopposing. a certain number of the openings 31. This wedge shaped air box 85 may be mounted to swing about the axis of the roll topermit adjustment and may be positioned by any suitable means herein diagrammatically illustrated by the rotatable connection 37 between the axial nozzle sectien y39 carried by box 35 and the pipe 41 leading to a suitable exhauster 43.
Having thus-described in detail the particular form of my invention shown by way of example in the accompanying drawings, what I claim l1s new and desire to secure by Letters Patent I shall express in the following claims.l Claims:
. 1. Paper crinklingr mechanism comprising 110 through which air may escape from beneath a paper-receiving roll and a copeiating crinkling element in combination 'with means for directinga blast against the roll to hold the paper thereagainst as it advances to said element, the roll having grooves to permit the escape ot' air from beneath the paper.
2. Paper crinkling mechanism comprising al paper-receiving roll and a coperating crinkling element 'in combination with means for directing a` blast against the roll to hold the paper thereagainst as it advances to said element, the roll having perforations thereby to permit air to be discharged from beneath the paper through the interior Uf the roll.
3. Paper crinkling mechanism comprising a paper-receiving roll and a cooperating crinkling eiement in combination with means for directin a blast against the roll to hold the paper t iereagainst as it advances to said element, the roll having grooves and perforations at the bottom of the grooves the paper.

5. Paper crinkling mechanism comprising in combination a paper-receiving roll and a coperating crinkling element and combined positive and negative fluid pressure means for holding the paper to the roll in a zone in advance of the position of said element.

Paper crinkling mechanism comprising a paper-receiving roll and a cooperating crinkling element in combination with means for directing a blast against the roll to hold the paper thereagai'nst as it advances to said element andl means permitting the discharge of air from between the paper and the roll.
