application filed FebruaryV 17, 1920. Serial No. 359,469.r
. citizen ol' the United States, residing in the city of Pittsburg, in the count-y of ContraI Costa and State of California, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Lead- Pencils, of which the following isa `speci lication.
My invention relates to improvements m lead pencils of the type wherein a permanent body is supplied with extra leads, wherein a tip portion, having a coaxial bore and magazine therein operates in conjunction with a body portion having means for pro jecting a lead through said tip portion.
The primary object of the present invention is to provide an improved simplified and economical construction having an increased efficiency.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a new and improved construction, for pencils of the character described, adapted` to facilitate the transmission of a new or extra lead from the magazine to the writing ti i of the pencil.
A still fart er object of the invention is to provide c new and improved construction easily, economically and readily assembled to reduce the cost of parts and the manufacture of the pencil.
Another ohicct of the improvement is to provide an improved construction having greater stability and fewer operations both in the production and operation of the pencil.
l accomplish these several objects 'by means of the improved device disclosed in the drawings forming a part of the present specification wherein like characters of reference are used to designate similar parts in vertical longitudinal section, of the bodyl portion only of the encil;
Fig. 6 .is an en arged elevation of the` tip portion only;
Fig. 'is a top plan view of Fig. 6; and Fig. Sas a further enlarged transverse sectional vlew taken on line 8--8 of Fig. 1 in the direction indicated.
Referring to the drawings the numeral 1 is used to designate in general the tip portion of the pencil which comprises a tubular cylindrical portion 2 and a hollow tapered portion 3. The writing tip of the tapered portlon 3 1s provided with an axial bore 4 having a threaded portion 6, the purpose of which will hereinafter be more fully set forth.
t The 'cylindrical portion 2 of the tip rtion 1s k-nnrledor otherwise roughene as at 7.111 order to facilitate retention of the pencil 1n the head during the writing process.
lnto the threaded portion 6 of the tapered portieri 4 is screwed one end-of a coaxial tube 8 which is held in spaced relation with the cylindrical portion 2 of the tip portion 1 by means of a washer or partition 9 sweated or otherwise Secured within said tip portion l at the junction, preferably, of the tapered and cylindrical portions 3 and 2 respectively, and bored centrally to en age and retain said tube 8 asdisclosed in ig. 1 of the drawings.
The spaced relation of the axial bore or tube S to the tip l provides an annular magazine 16 between said tube 8 and the internal walls of the 'cylindrical portion 2 ofthe tip portion l, within which magazine may be stored additional or extra leads 14.
he tube 8 is recessed or slotted longitudinelly as at 11 to permit the frictional engagement of a spring clamp 12. nfiounted upon Said tube 8, between the partition 9 and Writing point, with a lead 14 wit-hin tube 8 or axial bore of the tip portion 1 t0 normally prevent longitudinal movement of said lead 14 within said axial bore.
The upper end of the ma azine 16 is open and substantially flush wit the upper end of the cylindrical portion 2 of the tip portion 1 of the lead pencil. The upper end of saidpol'tion 1 is provided with a neduced externally threaded portion 21 which is arranged to be engaged by the internally threaded lower end of a tubular body portion. 22oto c1ose said magazine 16 and saidbody portlcn` is provided wlth means to project a lead through the axial bore 4 of the tip portion 1 inv the following manner:
The body portion 22 is `provided neer its lower end 'with n bearing 23 Within which ie rotatably mounted the lower end of u hollow cylindrical externally threaded rod 24 hoving u radially disposed longitudinal slot zo therein und o cylindrical member 27 secured in axial alinement to the opposite or upper end of the rod 24, said member 27 being provided with au annuler flange 28 to rotatably engage, the annular recess or shoulder 29 in the adjacent or upper end of the tubular body portion 22 and thereb center the upper end of the rod Z4 with Said body portion 22 und at the seme time provide n beziringrr for the upper end of Said rod 24.
The member 27 may be provided with a. chamber 3U within which is secured :in eraser 32 by means of e 'Screw 33, the upper end of the member Q7 with eraser 32 being lnclosed by means of e. suitable ornamental. oop 3ft in threaded engagement with the upper end of member 2'? as disclosed in Fig. 1 the drawings.
he opposite or lower end of the rod 24 is provided with an externally threaded portion 36 which extends beyond or below said healing 23 and is engaged by a nut 37 hrwx ing diametricully opposed holes or apertures 38 for the reception of`a Spanner or other wrench or tool to screw orunscrew the said nut. 3'4" u n the rod QA, and thereby move the hmge 2 of the member 27 down onto the annuler recess 29 of the tubular body portion 22, thereby effectively, securely and rotatably securin the threaded rod Qi within the body portion 22. Y
A threaded follower 41 is mounted upon the threaded rod'24 and is provided with projecting teeth 1Q on one Side thereof to slidnbly engage e plurality of longitudinally disp1 )eed internal groovee 43 Withln the body portion 2L The follower 41 is also provided with an intel-nul annular roove 44 which is slidably engaged by :i Tif @ded lateral extension 46 of u plungerlibly mounted within the fedi-illy disposejxmfgitndinal slot 26 of the threaded rod 24,`said plunger 47 bein arranged substnntizilly coaxial with the ody portion 22 und .viththe tube 8 whereb louoitudinai movement of' saiiplunger 4l; will move the sume into the coaxial bore or tube S of the tip portion l of the pencil. y
The lateral extension 46 of the plunger 47 is slidnbly connected with the groove 44 of. the follower 4l so that when the rod 24 ,rotuted the radial Slot 26 thereof will,
of course engage the lateral extension 46 of seid plunger i7 :1nd rotate the same while the follower 41 will not rotate being nonyintzibly but longitudinally slidohly convhected, through the medium of the teeth 42 and grooves 43, with the body portion 22.
rigid and the knob 34 hr member 27 is ro teted which will in turn rotate the threaded rod 34;` and cause the same to move the slid- :ibly mounted follower 41 longitudinally Within the body portion of the pencil and thereby actuate the plunger 47 to move intoA the axial bore of the tip portion 1 and project u lead Within said bore beyond the end of the writing point of the pencil. the spring y clam 12 meanwhile frictionally engaging the lead to normally prevent movement thereof within said bore.
This friotionul engagement is provided to prevent loss of the lead Within the bore when ths pencil is inverted.
The novel construction readily facilitates the renewal of e lead within the writing point oy elimination of processes now necessary in eimilerupencils heretofore on the market.
Y In tlhepresent instance it is only necessary to unscrew theixidy portion 2'2 from the tip portion 1 and the magazine 16 with its extra leads i4 is readily end instantly accessible. A lead is removed from the annulerkjmagnzine 16 and placed in the adjacentA fr upperend of the bore or tube 8 of the tiki portion l and the body portion 22 is then rewed back onto the Suid tip portion l which operation will clos-ie the magazine to prevent accidental or inadvertent removal of the remaining leeds therefrom.
By? operating the knob 34 or member 27 as hereihhefore described seid renewed lead will projected through the coaxial bore or tube 8 of the tip portion 1.
In.` constructing this new and novel pencil it is only necessary to screw thedtube 8 into the threaded portion 6 of the tip portion 1 and seat the partit-ion or Washer 9 therein to center seid tube.
In the body portion it is only necessary to secure the member 2'? to the rod 24 by Sii lll-i means of solder or the like, nfterthe eraser l' retaining Screw line been positioned, and
then mount rod 124 within the homing 23 and stability of construction 'presents a novel url rangement by menus of which the proefles of renewing a. lead or projecting one from the coaxial bore of the pencil is greatly fe cilitated.
The simplxilied construction also permite of an economical assembling of the various
