To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, AUGUSTINE F. LITTLE- FIELD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lynn, in the county 'of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented cer-V tain new and useful Improvements in Soles; and I do hereby declare .the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled ticularly to the manufacture of soles having' a sewing rib.

The object of the invention is to produce an'improved form of reinforced sole for use in the manufacture of shoes. Vhile the invention is more especially adapted for use in the manufacture of welt'insoles, it may also be used in making turn soles.

In the manufacture of both types of vsole named a requisite of their construction consists in a marginal sewing rib to which the upper materials are attached, usually by a sewed seam. To this end an important feature of the present invention resides in the formation of a sewingrib to be attached to the body portion of the sole. VPreferably the reinforcement and sewing rib are integral'and a further object of the invention relates to the production of a novel ribbed reinforcement. Accordingly a further feature of the invention comprises the particular texture of the reinforcement which includes the sewing rib.

It has also been the practice to plovide an insole'blank or body portion with a cord stitched to the body portion to form the lip to receive the inseam, and while such an insole has gained some use, the inseam is liable to distort the insole by the pull eX- erted on the cord. According to thepresent invention a strip of reinforcing material 1 0 is woven from a plurality of thread warps l2 and two cord warps 14 united by edges 18. The cords are preferably though not necessarily located lip-distant from the edges of the strip and the thread warps on the outsideof the cord warps are closely spaced, while the thread warps between the cord warps are widely spaced, to form strong closely woven feather portions outside the cord warps, and soft, sleazy,

loosely woven material between Vthecord warps. To use the woven strip it is slitted longitudinally on its medial line to form two pleces or strips of reinforced lip material.. These strips have selvage edges 18, strong feather portions 20, lip forming cords 14 securely united to the body of the reinweft threads 16 into a strip having selvao'e forcingmaterial, and soft, sleazy portions 22 inside of the lip. f

This strip of reinforcing material is used in making insoles by being secured to one face of the body portion 24 of an unlipped insoleby cement and a seam of stitches 26 with the selvage edge of the strip at the edge of the insole, and with the loose, sleazy portion of the strip inside of the lip formed by the cord warp 14, so that it may be gathered together in folds which occupy little space in going around the toe of the shoe thus eliminating the necessity of cutting away portions thereof. The reinforcing strip'is cheap, and is securely-united to the body portion of the insole so that when the upper is sewed .to the lip the stress eX- ertedV on the insolekby the upper is transmitted to large areas of the insole overcoming the liability of the latter to distortion or deformation in use.

The reinforcing strips may be woven of indefinite width and subsequently slitted if the advantage of the selvage is dispensed with. Thus, the reinforcing material Amay be woven of thread warps and cord warps and wefts with the successive areas across the warp being feather portions, a cord, a loosely woven portion, and so on, repeated ric may be a plurality of strips like that yshovvn in Fig. 3, arranged successively across the Width of the fabric. But it is preferred to make the reinforcing material in the`dou`` ble strip illustrated in Fig. 3 because the feather portions of the strips are provided With a selvage edge which contributes to the strength of the strip and prevents it from fraying at the edges. This is of advanta because When used in a Welt shoe there Wi be no frays extending up into the shoe at the edge of the insole Which present an unsightly` appearance inside the shoe, and injuriously-v affect its selling price. f The selvage is also of advantage when used in making turn shoes as in such shoes the edge of the reinforcing strip is exposed and, if frayed, even more objectionable than in Welt shoes.V Y

v,The body 24 of the insole may be made of any suitable material such as canvas, leatherboard, leather and especially inferior grades of leather, or combinations of these materials, as desired.

Vhile the preferred form of the invention is embodied in av Welt insole, the invention may'also be embodied in turn soles by attaching the reinforcing strip to the edge of the sole in the manner above described, and' grade of shoes to which this invention is especially adapted. InV White canvas turn shoes, so farrfrom being an-objection, the strip would be a distinct advantage.

The nature and scope of the present invention having been indicated and its preferred embodiment having been described, what is claimed as nevv,,is: e

1. A marginal sewingrib of textile material for shoe soles comprisino a plurality of thread-Warps and ai centrally located lipforming cord-War the thread-Warps being closely spaced on one side of the cord-Warp and Widely spaced on the other side ofthe cord-Warp and means for uniting the Warps.

A ribbed reinforcing material for the margins'of shoe soles comprising a plurality of thread-Warps and tWo lipy forming cord- Warps united by weft threads, the thread Warps being closely spaced at the edgesof the strip to form hard, strong margins, and widely spaced between the cord-Warps to form a soft, easily gathered center portion.
