T 0 all w ham it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. KENT, a citizen of the United States, residing in the borough of Brooklyn, city of New York, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful I mprovements in Machines for Trimming Flashed Edges on Binding, ofwhich the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to amachine for trimming flashed edges on binding, more particularly to a machine for trimmingthe edges of a forked binding of rubber or slmilar material such as is used on the margins of matting runners.
This binding is formed. with a tapering edge at one side and at the other side is split or forked, the margin of the runner being inserted in the fork and the portions forming-the fork being then sewed or otherwise secured to the runner. In the manufacture of this binding a flash is formed on the closed edge and also at the edges of each of the portions forming the fork. Previous to my invention it has been necessary to trim the flash portions by hand, which is a relatively slow and expensive method, and requires considerable skill on the part of the operator to uniformly trim the product.
An object of my invention is to provide a simple and efficient machine for trimming the flashed edges of binding.
Another object of my invention is to provide means for trimming the flashed edges of a forked binding having a closed and an open side,
Afurther object of my invention is to provide means for accurately guiding to a trimming device either side of a binding having differently formed side edges.
A further object is to provide a machine which is readily adjustable to handledifferent sizes of binding.
A still further object of. my invention is to provide a machine for trimming the flash from both forked side edges of a binding at equal distances from the closed edge.

which rise the uprights 2, 3 and 1. A shaft 5 carrying a drive pulley 6 is mounted in bearings 7 and 8 secured to the respective uprights 3 and 4: and carries at its free end a rotary cutter 9. A second shaft 10 carrymg a drive pulley 11 is disposed above the first shaft and is mounted in bearings 12 and 13, which bearings are adjustably secured to the respective uprights 3 and 4. by means of screws 1i passing through slots 15 in the uprlghts and threaded into the bearings. The free end of the shaft 10 carries a rotary cutter 16 coacting with the cutter 9, while the opposite end of the shaft passes through a slot 17 in the upright 2 to allow the shaft to be adjusted as previously described.
At th front of the machine is a work bed 18 supported on legs 19. A circular guide 20 having a peripheral guide groove 21 is adjustably mounted on the Work bed 18 by means of a threaded eccentric stud 22 and nut 23. Adjacent the rotary cutters is a transverse guide 2 1 having a concave upper surface adapted to coact with the binding in a manner to be hereinafter described, the guide being held in place by dowels 25. In rear of the cutters the work bed is provided with an upwardly extending ledge 26 formed with bores 26 in which the opposite ends of a guide 27 may be secured by means of the thumb screws 28. Projecting upwardly from the work bed are posts 29 formed with bores 30 in which the ends of the guide 27 may also be secured when'desired by the thumb screws 31. The-upper cutter 16 is protected by a guard 32, and attached to one end of this guard is spring presser foot 33 adaptedto coact with the guide 24 to hold the binding in osition in a manner to be later described.
11 operation the guide 27 is arranged as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 with its ends secured in the ledge 26. The binding 34 is then disposed with the outer margin of its closed side 35- engaging the guide groove 21 and the guide 27 is disposed within the fork in engagement with the inner surface of its closed side. The lower one of the forked portions 36 rests upon the concave upper surface of the guide 24 and the upper forked portion is held against the lower one by the presser foot 33. The necessary adjustments of the guides 20 and 27 are, of course, made to grip the closed side of the binding between them without unnecessary pressure and to at the. same time dispose the forked edges in proper .7 relation to the cutters 9 and 16 for trimming It will be noted that by use of the concave guide 24 the lower forked portion is raised to approximately the center line of the closed side 35 and the flashed edges of both the forked portions 36 are trimmed atsubstan tially the same distance from the closed side 35, whereas if the cutters were disposed to cut the forked portions immediately adja- 1 cent-the work bed the upper forked portion would be cut longer than the lower one. After the binding has been fed through the machine in the manner just described the guide 27 is reversed and its ends secured in the posts 29. The binding is then reversed 1 of the guide 27 it can be used to trim either 7 the closed or forked sides of the binding.
Having thus described my invention what I claim and desire to protect by Letters Pattent is:
1. In a machine for trimming the flashed edges :of a forked rubber binding, an edge trimming means, and guide means disposed wholly at one side thereof and coacting with the binding in advance and in rear of the trimming means. toproperly position for trimming the edges of either the closed or open side thereof. - 2. In a machine for trimming the flashed edgesof a forked rubber binding, an edge trimming means, and means including fixed and movable guides at one side of the trimming means for properly positioning the edges of either side of the binding with respect to the trimming means.

In a machi ne for trimming flashed edges on binding, a cutter for trimming either side thereof, and guide means for positioning either side for trimming,said guide including a reversibly mounted guide. i i I 4'. In amachine for trimming the edges 7 of binding, cutting means disposed to trim the binding at one side thereof,guide'means-v for the other side of the binding, and remov- 1 ably mounted means for guiding-and-holding-the binding against said guide means.
5. In a machine for trimmmg the edges of binding, a grooved guide for one side edge of the binding, removably mounted means for maintaining said edge against said guide, and offset rotary edge trimming means disposed to cut the opposite sideof the binding. r
6. In a machine for trimming the edges of forked binding, a guide-for one side edge of the binding, removably mounted means disposed interiorly of the bindingfor maintaining said edge against the guide, and

In a machine for trimming the flashed edges of a forked binding, a cutter, and means coacting with the closed side edge of the binding for preventing lateral displacement of the binding during the trimming of either side 17. Ina machine for trimming flashed edges on binding, a cutter for trimming either side thereof, spaced guides each adapted to coact with either side of the binding, and a reversible guide adapted to engage the 'binding at the same part thereof irrespective of which side is presented to the cutter for trimming.
18. In a machine for trimming the flashed edges of a forked rubber binding, a work bed, a cutter disposed to'operate above the surface of the bed, and means for spacing either the closed edge or the edges of the open side of the binding above the bed in operative relation to the cutter.

In a machine for trimming the flashed edges of a forked rubber binding, a guide for one edge of the binding, an adjustably mounted guide for the other edge, a cutter mounted adjacent one of said guides, and guide means disposed internally of the binding and movable to coact with either of the 20. In a machine for trimming the flashed edges of a forked rubber binding, a work bed, a cutter, a lower fixed binding guide coacting with the cutter, means opposed to said guide for holding the binding thereagainst, a second guide spaced from said first guide and adjustable relatively thereto, interior guiding means for the binding, and means for supporting said last named gui'ding means in cooperation with either of said first guides.

In a machine for trimming flashed edges on binding, a rotary cutter, a transversely convexed guide extending longitudinally of the cutting edge and adjacent thereto, a presser foot coacting with said guide, a circular guide spaced from said first guide and having a grooved guiding periphery, means for adjusting. said last guide to and from the first one, an intermediate guide, and means for supporting said last guide in different positions.
