JOHN H. BATES, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
" HEAD-BRUSH.
1,382,161. Specification of Letters Patent Patented J nne 21, 1921.
Application filed June 7, 1920. Serial No. 387,263. I
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JoHN H. Barns, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Head-Brushes, of which the following is a. full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to head brushes and more particularly to those adapted to apply a grease to the scalp.
The object of the invention is to provide a brush which is adapted to apply grease to the scalp with a suitable container from which the grease may be fed to the brush.
The invention consists in the several novel features hereinafter set forth and more particularly defined by claims at the conclusion hereo In the drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevation of a device embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section. Fig. 3 is a section taken on line 33 of Fig. 2.
The invention is particularly adapted to a brush generally similar to a tooth brush and comprising a back 4 in which the bristles 5 are secured and a handle 6 extending longitudinally from one end of the back. The latter is provided with a longitudinal slot or opening 7 extending therethrough for the ingress of the grease to the space between the bristles. A row of bristles 5 is arranged at each side of the slot 7 so that the grease entering through said slot will pass into the space between the bristles. The grease container comprises a box body 8 adapted to contain grease having closed sides and ends, a cover 9 hinged to the body at 10 and adapted to be held closed by a latch 11, a box bottom 12 and flanges. 13 depending from the bottom and adapted to fit against and frictionally engage the sides of the back 4: of the brush. These flanges 13 below the brush back 4 are bent inwardly, as at 14: to engage the bristles and flex them toward the transverse center of the brush so that the bristles will restrict the passage of grease. The outer end of the box-body 8 is extended, as at 15, to form a stop for the outer end of the bruslrback. A plunger 16 in the box is adapted to force the grease through the opening 7 to the bristles. A screw 17 thread ed to the cover 9 has its lower end rotatably held in the plunger 16 and its upper end- The invention exemplifies a brush which is adapted more particularly to apply grease to the scalp. Heretofore it has been customary to apply the grease to the brush by hand. lVhenever the grease held adjacent the ends of the bristles is consumed, it is only necessary to give the screw a little turn to bring a fresh supply of grease to the bristles and continue the treatment of the scalp. The back 4- of the brush is slida-bly held in the container so that the container may be used with different brushes and to permit a brush to be withdrawn to be cleaned. By pulling the handle 6' away from the container, the back 1 will slide out; of the container and the bristles 5 will be withdrawn, from between the flanges 14. By using flanges on the container adapted to press the bristles of the brush togethenexcessive feed of the grease is prevented.
The invention is not to be understood as restricted to the details set forth, since these may be modified within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. The combination with a brush having a longitudinally extending back provided withan opening extending nearly from end to end thereof, a handle extending and projectmg from one end thereof, and bristles at the sides of said opening, of a container for the material to be forced through said open ing for application to a surface by the bristles, provided with sides frictionally gripping the brush-back to secure the container and the brush together and an end extended to lap the other end of the back, and means for' forcing the material from the container and through the opening.
2. The combination with a brush coinprising a back having an opening therein and bristles at the sides of the opening, of a box for containing material to be applied bythe bristles and provided with means for securing it to the brush-back, means for forcingmaterial from the box through the opening,
5 prising a back and means on the box extended to press the bristles together below the opening to restrict the outflowof the material.
3.'The combination with a brush comhaving an opening therein and bristles at the sides of the opening, of a box for containing material to be applied by the bristles and provided with 111621118 for securing it to the brush-back, mean for forcing material from the box through the JOHN H. BATES.
