A stud 94. (Figs. 13, 14 and 15). projects inwardly from the upright portion of the frame 422, and has a. lever 95, pivoted thereon with the upper end projecting through a slot in the top wall of the side compartment of the casing and in the cover plate 8, to permit a limited oscillation of the lever. An arm 96, is pivoted on this lever 95, and has a wide face at the outer end positioned so the edge thereof engages the thread 75, of the sleeve 74, and other mechanism to be hereafter described, and there is a light spring 97, on the pivot pin 98, of the arm 96, for elevating the outer end of the arm, and also a spring 99, on the pivot stud 94, of the lever 95, which holds the lever 95 at a tension to engage the outer end of the arm 96, with the thrcad75, of the sleeve 74.
An adjustable frame comprising the spaced plates 100 and'101, (Figs. 5, 6 and 16) which are secured together b the pins 102, to operate as a unit, is pivots 1y mounted on a stud 103, extending inwardly from the upright portion of the frame 42. The plate 100 is arranged adjacent the sleeve 74, and is adjustable to and from the outer end of the arm 96, and the edge of this plate 100, a ainst hich the end of the arm 96 is adapted to engage, is of irregular formation (see Fig. 15) so as to determinethe )lace along the threaded portion 75 of the seeve 74, at which the outer end of the arm 96, may be engaged therewith. As hereinbefore stated. the sleeve 74, immediately below the threaded portion 75 thereof, is grooved at 76". this construction being provided so that when the thread 75, which is pitched so that the operation thereof by the passage of coin through the machine forces the outer end of the arm 96 downwardly, will enable the arm 96, to be forced inwardlyinto the groove 76,
by the spring 99, as the end of the arm .reaches the lower end of the screw thread 75, and by such movement engages trip mechanism to be hereinafter described for arrestrequired 74, that when the plate 100 is adjusted to prevent engagement of the outer end of the ar' :1 96, with thethread75,exceptatthe lower end of a certain one of the angular portions of the edge, the angular portions of the edge of the plate a hove this point are so related to the outer end of the arm 96, as to direct same downwardly therealong until the outer end of the arm engages the thread at the lower end of the particular angular portion of the edg, and the operation of the sleeve 74, which is required thereafter to move the outer end of the arm 96 downwardly to release from the thread and engage the notch 76, requires the passage of a predetermined number of coins past the star wheel 64 and thus enables a definite predetermined number of the coins to be counted, whereupon the operation of the machine is arrested. For example, in Fig. 15, the plate 100 is shown in position of adjustment so that the outer end of the arm 96, engages the thread 75, at the lower end of the angular portion 107, of the plate, and when so engaged, operation of the sleeve 74, efi'ected by the carrying of forty coins past the star wheel 64 is required to move the end of the arm 96 down into engagement with the groove 76, at which time further operation of the machine is arrested. Whenthe plate .100, is set at this position, the angular portions 107, 108, and 109, are arranged so that the arm 96. when withdrawn from engagement with the sleeve 74, by the operation of the lever 95, and thrown upward by the tensionof its spring 97, comes into engagement with some portion of these latter mentioned angular portions, and when the lever 95 is released and returned toward the normal osition by its sn'ing 99, the outer end of the arm 96 slides downwardly along the angular edges 107, 108 and 109 and comes to rest at the lower end of angular portion 107 in engagement with the thread on the sleeve 74. By adjusting the plate 100, on its pivot 103, the arm 96, may be arranged to engage the threads at the lower end of any one of the angular ortions 105. 106. 107, 108 and 109, and e ects an adjustment to count 20. 25, 40, 50 or 100 coins respectively, or any other number of coins which the machine may be designed to count. The member 132 also serves at the time the lever 95 is operated to reset the mechanism to begin a new count, to prevent operation of the counting wheel 641, in the following msnner: As the lever 95, is retracted against the tension of its spring 99, the arm 96, is withdrawn and releases the pressure thereof against the depending arm 134, of the member 132, whereupon the member 132, is rotated by the s ring 135, to bring the lug 139, into the pet of the flange 136, and thereby prevent operation of the counting Wheel 64, The rotation of the disk 132, is at this time limited by the engagement of the depending lug 140, with the edge of the bracket 133. a
' For operating the disks 12-and 17 to carry the coin to operate the counting mechanism and discharge same from the machine, there is a shaft 141, (Fig. journalcd in bearings 142, of the bracket 9, and extending out through the side wall of the casing 1. A crank 143, is rotatably secured on the outer end of the shaft. and has a clutch engagement with a sleeve 144, which is pinned on the shaft 141, as at 145. so as to rotate with the shaft and slide lengthwise thereon. and there is a spring 1516, interposed between a collar 147. on the shaft, and the sleeve 144, so as to hold the latter in clutch engagement with the crank 143. The clutch spaces have an angular relation so that power is trans mitted from the crank 113, to the shal' t under normal conditions of operation. but upon an abnormal resistance being offered to the operation of the shaft 141. the clutch is antomatically released from engagement with the crank 143. A pinion 143. is secured on the inner end of the shaft 141, and meshes with a bevel gear 149. which is secured on the shaft 10, the meshing thereof being arranged in such a manner as to permit the vertical adj ustment hercinbeforo described, of the shaft 10 and bevel gear 149. without affecting the operation of the gear 149 by means of the pinion 148.
The operation is as follows: Preparatory to using the machine the lever 46. is adjusted for the particular denomination of coin to be counted. thcrcby raising or lowering the plate 12. to afford a space between said plate and the ring 19 of the upper disk or plate to accommoda e the particular denomination of coin, and such ad- 'ustment of the lever 46. also positions the ever or finger G1 to provide the proper space bctwccn the outer end of the finger and the star wheel 64. according to the diameter of the particular coin to be counted. The knob 119 is also adjusted to the point on the scale .121. which indicates the number of coins which lL is dcsircd to count at a time, or if a larger number than indicated on the Scale is required to be counted, the knob 91, is ad justcd to change the combined pinion member Sit-84, to mesh with "the proper gears to count decimal*multiples of the numbers indicated on the scale 121. The coins are then supplied to the hopperyl of the machine, and the handle 143 is rotated, and the disks 12 and 17 are operated thereby in op posite directions. As the coins fall u on the plate 12. they are propelled by centrifugal force, to the outer-edge of the plate 12, until they engage with the ring 21. and as the finger :37. comes in contact with a coin at the outer edge of the plate 12. the coin is carried thereby with the plate 12. around to the point of engagement with the star wheel 64. The end of the lever 61. holds the coin up against the star wheel 64. so that the latter is operat d by the passage of the coin, and the engagement of the finger 57. with the coin forces the latter past the star wheel and advances the star wheel the distance of one tooth. after which the coin continues to move forward and is dcflcctcd outwardly from the plate 12. bv the curved inner edge of the lever (11. and falls by gravity into the chute 62. which discharges it to the exterior oi the machine. As additional coins are movcd past the star wheel 64, the outer end of the lever 96. continues to move downwardly until the last coin of the predetermined number has passed the star wheel 64, when the outer cud of the levcr 96, will have moved downwardly a snflicient distance to disengage from the lower end of the thread 75. In a coin counting machine, the combination with the coin actuated star wheel and shaft thereof, a worm sleeve loosely mounted on said shaft, mechanism operated by said shaft for rotating said sleeve and mechanism cooperating with said worm sleeve and star wheel for stopping said star wheel after a predetermined number of revolutions thereof.
11. In a coin counting machine, the com bination with the coin actuated star wheel, and shaft thereof, of a worm sleeve loosely ,mounted on said shaft, :1 device'progressively actuated by said Worm sleeve, means for adjusting the extent of such progressive action, mechanism for driving said worm sleeve at varying rates of speed, and locking means for said sta'r wheel operable by said device.
12. In a coin counting machine, the combination with the coin counting star wheel, of locking mechanism therefor, adjustable mechanism operable at a predetermined time for operating said locking mechanism, and adjustable means for var ing the time of operation of said adj ustab e mechanism.
13. In a coin counting machine, a rotary coin carrying disk, a ring member spaced therefrom and adjustable to provide a coin passage, a coin deflecting finger extending in said passage, said finger having a slot, mechanism extending through said slot for simultaneously adjusting said coin carrying disk and finger for coins of different denominations.
14. In a coin counting machine, a rotary coin carrying disk, a ring member spaced therefrom to provide a coin passage therebetween, and adjustable rolling elements between said disk and ring responsive to adjustments of said rotary disk to vary the height of said coin passage.
15. In a coin counting machine. the combination with the coin actuated star wheel and operating shaft thereof, of means .for locking said star wheel after a predetermined number of coins have been counted comprising a Worm sleeve loose on said shaft, :1 second shaft. gearing connecting said shafts and sleeve, a locking device for said star wheel, and a device actuated by said worm sleeve for operating said worm sleeve for operating said locking device after said predetermined number of coins have been counted.
16. In a coin counting machine, the combination with the coin actuated element thereof, of locking mechanism therefor and means for operating said locking mechanism at predetermined times comprising a rotary element, a device adjustable with relation to said rotary element for operating said locking mechanism after a predetermined number of coins have been counted, and variable speed gearing connecting said elements.
17. In a coin counting machine, the combination with the coin actuated element thereof, of locking mechanism therefor, a rotary element, a device cooperating with said rotary element and having a plurality of adjustments for actuating said locking mechanism at a preselected time and gearing having a ten to one ratio connecting said elements for operating said device.
